Amazing Winter Fly Fishing on World Famous River | 7lb Brown Caught!

Спорт

It's early and I am on the Tongariro river again, fly fishing for trout following a tough day on the river. After a bit of trouble landing fish things came together in the lower river and I landed a bunch of rainbow trout and a nearly 7lb brown. It turned out to be a great day's fly fishing in an awesome New Zealand river.

Beautiful brown. Thanks for sharing your passion on the fly. Nice to see pleasantries on the Tongariro for you do come across some strange behaviour and jealousies at times. This sometimes upsets my love for the sport. Stay friendly and the world will smile on you.

Thanks for the kind comments and certainly agree there can be some strange behavior on the river but thankfully I mostly encounter nice folks. Hope me meet on the river some day.

I might have to pop down and have a sessIon on the mighty T after seeing you in action over the last few videos. One thought came to mind about the two fish early on is the tactic of getting below the fish during the fight - worked well for me me on the Rangitaiki against sulky browns. Of course that depends on what options you have with water depth or bank steepness to move freely. Keep the good times rolling Johan!

Thanks Mark. I am just not as nimble as I used to be over the rocks and with rubber soles I was a bit cautious. I installed rock treads since and it is so much better so maybe you will see me run downstream a bit faster next time 😂. Definitely head down for a trip. It's been a good year. Just wait for rain, it has been a bit tough since this video with a really low clear river.

Nice one, great brown after keeping your chin up from the morning frustrations. As someone else said, maybe try to quickly change the angle at the start of the fight - you were sort of in no man's land trying to pull the fish up the middle. Anyway, GoPro can be deceptive and it's easy to be an armchair expert. One thing i would respectfully recommend is that you don't carry your rod tip first along those paths - can only end in tears with a moment's inattention. I've walked those banks for hours and seen it happen. Is that a newish pool you fished in the morning, in the old Judges area or further down below the main road bridge?

Thanks for the tip about carrying the rod facing forward, will try to remember to turn it around next time. The first spot in the morning is just a minutes walk below the grace rd. car park in what I have been told is refered to as the braids. It is a fast shallow section and the fish head straight down with the current every time. It's hard to get the better of them and I am a bit slow over the rocks. Will try to work it out next time.

Haha thanks, he did ask me first and was very nice. Plus I wasn't moving up as fast as I should have. He was a really nice gentleman so was happy for him to jump in above me. I had caught a bunch by then anyway. But yes, some people sure don't get it.

Put your reel in the water and give it a few winds back and forward and all the sand will come out of your reel, just a quick way to clean the sand out

Hi, a very nice demonstration of long range release! Those little rapids come up very fast when you are trying to wrestle a fresh run fish and it is easy to run out of fighting room. That part of the river can hold a lot of fish and is always worth nymphing up and wet fly down to make the most of your opportunity. You had an early start and I thought you might have started with swinging a dark wooly bugger? Good bit of fishing! Harera

Haha yes. I have mastered the art of long range release. Those rapids have had me a few time now. I just learnt this weekend to fish about swinging flies on skagit lines so that sounds like just the plan for next time.

Crazy About Fly Fishing Hi, try using the shorter skagit line as it’s easier to shoot out. I use the Rio one and can easily reach the far bank, use a split shot to make sure you get to the bottom quickly. Good luck, look forward to your next trip. Harera
