Fly Fishing New Zealand - This is Simon Pengelly - The Tongariro River

There is something inherently beautiful the way Simon Pengelly goes about his fly fishing, you have to stop and watch and take it in when he is on the water. He knows how he wants to fish and he is good, real good the way he goes about it.
These days, more often than not there are 3 things you'll see Simon doing with his time on the water and you can guarantee that each aspect/technique, goal he is aiming for has been studied, researched and discussed at length, practiced and then discussed, researched and studied some more..
1. Distance casting
2. Tongariro Roll Casting
3. Spey Casting Shooting Heads single hand.
Simon and I have lots of disucssion during the week, there are many days where my phone rings and Simon is on the other end with a "Hey And, what'd ya reckon about? or "We should try......, Hey have you got?..... there's a variety of questions all leading towards finding the perfect solution in this life long fly fishing pursuit and I'm greatful to have someone like Simon to have these converations with.
The last couple of years Simon went about refining his rod and line collection, rods were sold, bought then sold again to find the kit that would gel with the plan and it was the Sage Igniter 9'6" #6 which is truely a stunning rod to cast when lined with the range of shooting heads that Simon has tinkered and chopped to length to find the money for his down and across wetlining style and the Sage X 10'0" #6 that had him pushing the Tongariro Roll cast to disatance limits that were truely impressive. It has been a learning process for me in itself watching Simon eliminate rods from the equation to find the best possible setup for his goal.
Simon has given back lots to the New Zealand fly fishing community in the time I have known him, always willing to help those who are keen to learn and it's a real pleasure to be able to profile Simon in tis video and more to come in the This is Simon Pengelly series.
