The startup power drawn for charging 6 batteries may vary with their initial resistance. Keep a close eye the battery and charger temps (and a smoke alarm handy). It may work, but how long, how safely? The engineering specs usually assume you will plug in different products, some with lower amperage demands. (Kinda like assumptions of how many house AC plugs will actually be in use at a time - per breaker...) I would probably stick to 4 or 5 at a time, and avoid running it 7 hours at meltdown level. YMMV

I am praaaaying that Kastar doesn't randomly up and discontinue this NPF battery. When I go into production for my next feature I will be ordering an army of these batteries to power up all the portable lights for exterior scenes. The thought of having a ton of dual bay chargers taking up to 12+ hours to charge high capacity NPF batteries especially on back to back shoot days.... didn't want any of that lol!

Hey hey again Mariano! It's been awhile! Thank you so much for checking out this video and commenting! In regards about purchasing a Ursa Mini 4k to replace the GH4. It is no doubt that the Ursa Mini will produce a much higher quality video file compared to the GH4, which will result in better push of color corrections and grading. However I think it really depends on what kind of video you are filming. I used both GH4 and GH5 in my movie and I honestly couldn't the difference between the cameras because they matched so well together. The Ursa Mini will have a slightly different color reproduction so you will have to decide which camera (BM vs Pana) to match to the other. 2nd, how do you usually use your cameras? Are they on a tripod or do they move a lot on equipment? If it's usually used on a tripod, then deploying the Ursa Mini may not be that drastic of a change to your shooting style, and perhaps you will use the Ursa Mini 4k to get the "principle shot" so that your subject has the best skin tone reproduction. Though that being said, GH5 skin tones do pretty well when you're filming with Tungsten lights vs Daylight balance lights. (It's the way Panasonic processes skin tones depending on your WB setting) Lastly, the question for my consideration is how much will you be able to purchase the used Ursa Mini for? The GH5, in the states, is currently a crazy $1599 USD, amazing price for such a wonderful camera. I'm usually a little hesitant to mix cameras from different brands because the colors will be different, while this can easily be corrected, you will need to have another set of completely different batteries that you can't use with the other camera, and the Storage Media could be different as well in some cases. If you sold the GH4 to get a matching GH5, you will know that all your SD cards and Batteries, camera settings can be the same across the board and save you time in post production. There are definitely a whole lot of things to consider, and a lot of stems from what kind of videos you shot and how you deploy your cameras. But hopefully these things get you thinking a little bit. No doubt that the Ursa Mini is a pro-level camera with a wonderful feature set and video quality. But sometimes, as much as it's nice to have the camera, you may or may not need it unless you require a certain video fidelity when working for video production companies like Netflix. A very crude example of what I mean, "It's nice to own a Ferrari , but you live out in the farmlands where all the roads are dirt roads, there's no use for a car of that engine power out there." In my older monitor tests with a GH5 I was getting around 2-3 hours of use when powering a monitor (Andycine A6) and GH5 with IBIS running. Hey hey again Dutch4Motion! There used to be a NPF battery that put out a 12v DC but that has since been discontinued. Such a shame as it was a very good battery that I still use. As for other NPF Batteries with a USB-Out. Quite a few 3rd party batteries still have this feature. You just need to make sure that it provides at least 5v2a. 2.1a would be great, 2.4a would be best. Make sure when you do this that you go into your GH5 photo mode and tell it to go into Electronic shutter instead of mechanical shutter. After that when you go back to your video shooting mode, you want to be in Silent mode. This will allow you to have access to custom WB should you need it. Hope this helps!

Great review. Very thorough. Just a heads up, it might be hard to get this battery in some countries. I wasn't able to find any sellers that ship to Japan :(

Hey hey RhymeMastaMasse! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! Technically the same functionality but it won't let you charge 10 batteries full speed. If I remember correctly, the 10 port is still just 60 watts of total power, meaning you can only charge up to 6 batteries at pull power, if you start plugging in more they will all start charging slower and your USB hub will get quite hot as it's charging at Max stress for a prolonged period of time. The math is each USB port needs to provide 10 watts to get the decent standard of faster charging. USB power banks trick you by saying you can charge 10+ things at once and they'll stay stuff like 2.4amps on each port. This is assuming you only plug one thing or two, any more than that it'll drop and your charging will go down big time. This is why you want to look for Watts it can do, so you can see what its charging power is for each port. Hope this helps! Thanks again for stopping by! Excellent viewpoint and analysis. Im curious how the lifespan is effected over time , as charging the lithium ion batteries faster wears them out more - so the faster charging will reduce its lifespan - how much as in years or months - that’s the question one would need to do a longer term study with say one only charged slowly on a dedicated slow charger. How was the quality of the kastars in build? 2022 looking at the reviews quite a few seem to have problems with the case seams coming apart - not sure if it’s delivery handling or weak construction.

Hey hey again InterCity-1-3-4! Since purchasing these batteries and using them for my LED battery tests for 2 years? One Battery failed and the other I think is holding about 90% of the original capacity. I'm not sure what the new versions are like now a days. As far as other companies to look into, I've always had good luck with Wasabi and Powerextra.

I'm trying to find what the max current draw is on these batteries. I own a pair of CameTV Boltzen lights and they're pretty demanding ( they need >6 amps per battery to operate). I have a DSTE that straight-up can't supply enough juice to run the lights. Any idea if the Kastar or PowerExtra brand can supply 7.4v at over 6 amps?

I do remember the Boltzen's being rather power hungry to get the full brightness on a signal NPF battery. Some people I think just bought a V-mount adapter and d-tapped into the boltzen to get a more reliable power draw. Greetings Maros! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! I personally have not tried this and the reason is because I do not recommend to do it. I don't believe these batteries management chips are designed for this type of use case and you could risk damaging the system. That being said, for filmmakers using the budget monitors that can also power their DSLR cameras, there are other batteries out there that i'll be testing to help filmmakers that want to have long extended use when they are out in the field. Gotcha, the first general solution is just to make sure you have extra batteries to ensure you can get through a film day and hopefully allow the other batteries to charge while you are using others. In terms of charging solutions, because these are using USB to recharge, you can purchase multiple large USB Battery banks to take with you (not ideal, but a potential solution) The next solution would be to get a USB powerbank solar charger combo. I have not tested these out yet but solar panels are becoming the next best thing because of how USB devices don't require a lot of voltage. So this way you can charge your battery almost anywhere you are when you are not near an outlet or a car. The last most expensive option is to get a battery generator to act as your portable charging station, paired with a larger solar panel to to charge the generator. There are a few decent ones that many camper/survival youtube filmmakers use to be able to document their 30 day camping survival series and it seems to work just fine for their needs. I don't know your particular situation and if you are able to get back to a power source at the end of the day. But each solution has two things to consider to determine which is best: Price and How much you have to carry with you when you are on your journey. Hope this helps give you some ideas! for my bmpcc i got an npf to bmpcc adapter cause my father still had some old npf batteries. they all worked but only 1 of them ended up working with bmpcc. i decided not make it part of my regular setup because 1. i have 7 (4 of then are high quality) bmpcc batteries, so i didn't need it in the last 5 months or so. 2. it takes up a lot of space and i love the tinyness. the pocket with lens fits into a bigger jacket pocket 3 batteries and a extra battery in another pocket and i am set. i really like npf batteries for 2 reasons 1 they get used for so many devices 2 they are cheao 3 they are easy to mount to the battery plate 4 you can have small one's for gimbal and run ans gun stuff and 5 you can have big ones for stationary stuff 6 they often have extea features like usb charging, charging indicator i feel like one point that makes the z cam e2 superior is that it nicely uses npfs. its the perfect gimbal / steadycam, custom rig camera. you need to unscrew most mirroless cams from the cam to switch batteries sometimes sd card. anyways, great video short summery in the beginning, details and explanation later, i really apreciate this style especially that you warn about risks and stuff, it shows that you care, thanks man

Hey hey again Ian, Unfortunately that specific Powerextra battery no longer exists anymore (no longer able to charge via DC) They still have a DC port but its Output only, the originally had two DC ports. Do you have the older version with the two DC ports? I don't want you to short circuit your battery and charger.

I am not willing to try it because of another reason... "You're most likely discharging faster than recharging". Greetings Ed! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! Hmm... the 8.4v was not an original option on the powerextra I reviewed. The battery would have had three total ports (1usb x 1 DC input 12v x 1 DC output 9v and 12v). The rubber flaps would tell you which one was output and which one was input as far as the DC is concerned. The DC 8.4v version I believe was output only and couldn't take an input to charge. Last I checked they've completely eliminated the DC ports in their NPF batteries. I have no idea why :(. But all is good, these Kastar batteries have been doing well and the USB charging on them is quite quick and much easier to use than a DC charging port. I'd say proceed with caution with the 8.4v version that you have and double check everything before plugging in a DC input source. Thanks again for stopping by! Hope to see you in the next one! Whew glad we dodged that Bullet! The 8.4 would be good to power a camera and then the batter would be attached to a light or a monitor. I’d use a multimeter to double check that it’s an 8.4 just incase. But this could be a moot experiment as many devices can now be powered through usb instead of DC ports.

I bought these to use with the new Godox ML60Bi. As soon as I plug in the second battery, something happens and the batteries both show they have no charge using the built-in battery meter and I am unable to turn on the light. When I plug the batteries into the charger they charge up to full almost instantly. I tested them with a Dracast light and they worked fine. Anyone else have a weird problem with these?

Hey hey Professor Z! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! This could be a defect of the Kastar batteries. The ones I have hear are a much older model as the video is quite old at this point. I'm not sure if the newer Kastars either don't have very good cells that can supply the needed current or if you possible got a lemon. The other potential problem is the Kastars own overload chip is set too low (but also could be because they need to compensate for cheaper battery cells) So what happened was the moment you turn it on, it triggers the overload and shuts the cells off, giving you the "low battery" meter. When you plug it into the charger this gets reset and the overload stop is released. Hard to say at this point what it could be, but hopefully this helps a little bit as you find some 3rd party batteries that can sustain the load. @@TLDR_filmmaker Update! They work. I don't know if I was doing something wrong or what happened. I purchased 2 of these lights, so I took out the second and everything worked perfectly. So then I tested the first one again and now it too is working. Not really sure what the problem was, but they now work great. I did a test and the Godox ML60Bi ran for just under 140 minutes at full power. Very impressive.

I have tried to buy Kastar batteries in the Netherlands via ebay, aliexpress and Amazon but non of them will send them to the Netherlands. Do you have a solution?

Yes, this NPF battery will work with the Liliput monitor and traditionally most portable monitors as the NPF battery is pretty standard for their designs. In terms of total run time, I would conservatively estimate about 4.5 hours per battery. I haven't actually tested this as I only use my Liliput for my youtube station plugged into the wall, but the Liliput I believe only uses about 12watts of power, so I don't think the monitor will suffer from the LED panels that use up much more power. I hope so too! The USB charging is so nice and efficient! I hope more NPF batteries will include this feature but also include maybe a USB C out? With so many new things adopting the USB C port and taking up such low amounts of power, these NPF batteries are going to see a new life and essentially become mini-V mount batteries!

Hey hey again Frank! Thank you so much for checking out another video and commenting! Hmm, I have the old Powerextra batteries that have the USB port and when using my USB Dummy Battery I was able to power my monitor and GH5 at the same time. I'm curious, what GH5 firmware are you on currently? I am still on 2.1 and probably still won't be updating to the new 2.6. I wonder if newer firmware has changed the way it looks for battery power and will give you that message if you're using a unofficial battery? Hi there! I was hoping you could answer a question of mine. Do you know if it is possible to charge the battery while it is being used? In a sense it would then act as a buffer between external USB power and the device being used (I my case an Atomos Ninja V). Essentially I have a system that is completely USB powered (mics, camera, field recorder) Unfortunately I can currently find any way to properly power the ninja V without getting a different power supply than my USB power banks. What I would like to do is be able to power the Atomos (or any device that uses L-mount batteries) using these batteries as a buffer. I'm in Canada and although this exact model is not available up north, there is a version that is powered via USB C (Link to the one in question). From the documentation they seem to be from the same OEM manufacturer, and therefore if the one's that you have work, the ones with USB C will work!

Greetings Felix! Thank you so much for checking out this video and asking a question! I can't say for sure if this would work as this test could have a chance of shorting out my battery. I don't have anything to back this up but my gut feeling tells me its not a good idea to try and charge and deplete an NPF battery at the same time, mainly because their input and output voltages are different (that's what bothers me about trying). However, I'm not sure what the power requirement of a Ninja V is, I'm guessing and hoping they use a 12v external source if you didn't want to use a battery. If this is a case, I think it may be only a matter of time for someone to come up with a USB C to 12v converter cable, you'll just want to make sure it supplies enough Amps to the Ninja V. I feel this route would have the highest success of achieving what you need, as this will also keep the weight down on your setup without having a large NPF battery attached to the Ninja V. Definitely report back how you like it, I wonder if it has more capacity than this one in terms of its Amp (current) ability. The reviews seem good on there so far. Hope it works well for your needs!

I like your logic. One point though ... I looked at the specs on the Amazon page and I did not see where they said the charger could DELIVER 60 watts. Normally when I read the specs on an electric device, I would read that 60 watts as the power the device pulls from the house mains. Since no device is 100% efficient, that would mean that it can not safely pull two amps times six ports. I could be wrong about that. This article (evbatterymonitoring.com/webhelp/section_3.htm about lead-acid batteries) may not be correct for what we are talking about but it says that the chargers are between about 70% and 80% efficient. Just some food for thought. Maybe you can test your 6-port charger and see how hot it gets. Otherwise, I love your logic.

Hey hey Robert! It's been awhile! Thanks again for checking out another video and commenting! I took at look at the tech spec PDF that Amazon provided on the page. On paper its taking the AC Mains between 100-240v (depending on country) at a max draw of 1.5a to deliver its DC 5v 12a max. I will be testing this charger soon to see what happens at its max draw if I used up 6 NPF batteries so that the charger has to work from the absolute worst case scenario. Though what you say does makes sense to me, and I wonder if the circuitry inside the 60w charger accounts for efficiency. I'll find out soon enough!
