Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

My friend found this in a dumpster and brought it to me with a challenge "see what you can do with this to make it look good again." In fact, he said if I could restore it he would donate $100 to a charity of my choice!
So the challenge was on! I was determined to make it look not only "good" but SPECTACULAR!

    I just wanted to make it look more modern. I also wanted to show my viewers how to use them so they could use them on other makeovers if they so desired. I have a dresser and nightstand coming up where I plan to use them so I learned a LOT on this one. They are actually hard to cut because they are so small and are made of hard wood. They splintered and flew around my workroom when I used a mitre saw! eee gads! So i used dremel instead.

    Wow what a rescue! I don’t think very many people would’ve thought that piece was worth saving. I wasn’t a fan of the dowels, I think they would’ve looked better stained with the same gel stain you used for the rest of the table. But I love that you tried out something new and thanks for sharing your process. I learned about bloom/blush, I wouldn’t have ever known what that was called or that it was even fixable without your video!

    Hi Dayna. I wanted to make it look more modern. Anyone can strip it and stain it but I wanted to restyle it. You have now see a new way to change /update furniture using 1/4 inch wood dowels. I am going to use them on a dresser in an upcoming makeover. So, I learned a lot about how to cut them, glue them, etc on this video. Thanks for watching!!

Such a great video and a great place to start on my restoration journey. Also, I want to add that while it seems that many people aren't fans of the unfinished dowels, I think the contrast is absolutely beautiful 💛

    In my experience, it works best to remove stripper with a scraper-plastic ones are less likely to leave scrape marks-and the residual with CLEAN steel wool. Then steel wool and mineral spirits for a final cleanup. And agree with others that the dowel pieces are too much for this sweet little table. Staining them to match the rest would have been a bit better than leaving them natural.

  • @FurnitureFlippingForProfit

    I wanted this table to look more transitional since traditional does not sell well in my market. I tried using a plastic scraper but it began to "melt" and simply did not work! Maybe I need a special plastic scraper.

  • @magicgordo4878

    @magicgordo4878

    2 жыл бұрын

    Metal scrapers aka putty knives, broad knives, tapers knives, cabinet scrapers (some made of glass) even pastry scrapers if sharpened work well for removing paints and coatings. Some of the plastic tools are great but depending on the stripper it will soften and essentially begin to dissolve the plastic. Sharpening a scraper is easy since it is not dealing with a "knife" edge although the same principle applies with "regular" knives. The leading edge (s) should be flat. A piece of closed coat sandpaper laid flat works well. Some tips on stripping and strippers: Use the stripper (s) according to the directions ie use more. up to 1/4". Let the chemistry do the work. Letting any of the types and brands of stripper sit is not going to make the stuff work any better or worse. With the solvent/paste strippers. clean up is less messy after the solvents evaporate. Using paint thinner is fine for final wash. Lacquer thinner is sometimes used on pieces originally done in lacquer (real lacquer not something just called lacquer) residual shellac can be cleaned or amalgamated using alcohol. If we may, a general tip: There are some highly skilled pro's that share on the www. There are also pro's that are sales pro's that promise that what they have for sale is going to make that piece of firewood that was two-bits a $500 instant heirloom with a single coat of (now you know) Magic Gordo Sauce...

    It came out well, adding a piece of rounded trim below the dowels, could soften the look. And thanks for the tips on the blush fix!

    It is super easy to use BUT you have to NOT TOUCH IT until it is completely dry. Let it sit overnight before you touch it or you will really mess it up! I learned the hard way. It is tempting to touch it but DON'T!!! LOL!!!

    Thank you for showing me what stripped mahogany should look like. I'm preparing to rehab a solid mahogany desk that's been in my family for at least 70 years, and was painted at least twice. Now I know to strip the object more than once if needed, as well as what to look for under all of paint and shellac. ❤❤

    The reducer (thinner) for real lacquers are miscible with water. Sometimes used in concert to remove overspray on glass and trim on cars etc. Blushing is caused by water and Mohawk has a great fix and a superb line of products as well. Water and the resultant blushing can be caused several ways. In the example here the substrate was wet. (Stuff Happens!) Sometimes the ambient air is damp or humid when spraying or even using brushing lacquer and shellac. Yep. shellac is somtimes sprayed too using special heated conventional cup guns. . Some basics : Two types of HVLP rigs one using compressed air from compressor the other using air from a turbine. As air is compressed it heats upon release it cools and can adsorb or absorb water. In a turbine rig large or small (hand held) the air is heated. Conventional sprayguns including airbrushes use compress air as the vehicle. The third type is the "airless" that is hydraulic. Any attempt by anyone in the "biz" who purports to hav e even a tenth of the solutions to this painting business is best taken with handfull of salt.
