Somewhere on Earth - All episodes: • Somewhere on Earth | A...
It’s one of the greenest countries on earth, an Eldorado of river and forest where the possibilities seem endless. Suriname, in the Amazon, is one of the Last Frontiers, and a land of illegal gold panners. For Nature lovers, this little country is a gold mine of bio-diversity in the image of its extremely mixed population. In the heart of the Amazon, pirogue or airplane are the only ways to plunge deep into this endless forest tinged with adventure.
Fabian Vas is a buru, a white descendent of Suriname’s original Dutch colonists. He has decided to capture the beauty of his little-known country. Fabian loves the wilderness and exploring unknown territories, photography and the people he meets in his life. He has made a name for himself in this little country flanked by the Amazon on one side and the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean on the other.
For the tribes of the Amazon, the doctor always arrives by air and never empty-handed. Rosanne Peuscher, 35, is Suriname’s only flying doctor. She works for Medische Zending, a medical and humanitarian mission. She crisscrosses the Amazon by plane helping the communities isolated in the vast tropical forest.
Monique Pool is a heroine in her country, because she is a defender of the Amazon’s emblematic animal, the sloth. Monique’s yard is a little Noah’s Ark, a heaven for the more fragile creatures of the forest. She shelters sloths but also porcupines, anteaters, plus one giant anteater. Thanks to her actions she was short listed for CNN Hero of the Year.

It is one of the least densely populated countries on Earth. Suriname is a tropical country dominated by rainforests. It is the only sovereign nation outside of Europe where Dutch is the official and prevailing language of government, business, media, and education. Due to the variety of habitats and temperatures, biodiversity in Suriname is considered high. The sloth is the national animal of Suriname and they’re so cute! Enjoy and if you’re up for adventure, Monique, sloth saver, is looking for volunteers.

What an amazing documentary! I was born in Suriname, left the country when I was 9 years and went back on vacation 36 years later. I am so happy to know that there are people, like Monique, the doctor, pilot, photographer, etc. that care for communities that are in the middle of a forest and are not destroying nature nor trying to eliminate the people that live in these areas, but helping them in their natural habitat, which helps to preserve the culture of the country . I never thought that my birth country is soo beautiful. I have seen dolphins where the Orinoco and Meta rivers meet at the borders between Colombia and Venezuela. Maybe these dolphins are similar to those in the river in Suriname. Thanks for this beautiful documentary!

We had a wonderful and unique experience with Ms. Monique Pool. One afternoon my youngest daughter discovered a sloth clinging to our water supply system at home. We live very close to the forest. We immediately contacted Ms. Monique, because we have no experience with these animals. And the animal also looked so terrifying with its sharp claw nails. While calling, she tried to reassure us that the animal could do no harm and was on her way to pick her up. When she arrived at our place, she picked up the animal as if it were a baby, only to release her safely into nature far away from people.
