Amazing Dolphins Surfing Waves in Western Australia

The coral coast of Western Australia is home to a vast array of marine life. From giant humpback whales on migration to the smallest of coral critters. With such diverse ecosystem it’s no surprise that large pods of dolphins are no strangers to this coast line. Dolphins are incredibly intelligent, social and playful mammals. They have been known to ride bows and wakes of boats as well as waves.
There’s a large pod of dolphins that often frequents a bay with a peeling left point in the middle of the coral coast. On the days when the swell is pumping these dolphins have been known to swing on a wave or two. They're comfortable taking off on waves as a large pod or even sharing a wave with their human wave riding counterparts.
I've several days filming at this spot where the dolphins and humans like to flock to. Over this time I've been lucky enough to capture them from land and air showing off their skills. This video shows how they love to tear down the line, harnessing energy from the wave. They seamlessly weave between one another, project themselves into the air and kickout the waves with beautiful synchronicity and grace.

Only a very intelligent wild creature would surf waves just for the pure enjoyment of it. Shows just how smart they are.

So who are you to call other animals intelligent? Skunks think you're unintelligent because your farts aren't as stinky as their sprays, right?

Most animals play as we human animals do. I've seen crows sliding down snowy rooftops or icy car windshields on purpose, cows and bulls rolling balls around on the ground, a chicken and playing with a stuffed Barney toy, etc.

On my visit to WA last year, I was walking along the coast when I spotted a pod of dolphins surfing the waves over and over again. Their joy in the moment was so obvious and I ended up watching them for 30 mins. It was mesmerising to watch.

I think they're just all making individual decisions to go together, exactly like when a family leaves a restaurant. You can see from the video that they absolutely don't all agree at the same moment. I reckon it's just like when a soccer match finishes and the crowd knows it has to go. It's not an instant thing at all, even though it looks pretty quick, like with this footage. It's all individual decisions. Really nice. They're absolutely as individual as people and so many other creatures, a trillion percent certain, zero question. I absolutely can't imagine what sort of idiot would think that was some sort of surprise. ..What do people think lives in animals??? Life. Individual. Of course. Bird chicks are like it if you're observant enough.
