Shou Sugi Ban (焼杉板) is the process of charring wood to preserve it. Originating in Japan during the 18th century, it was a way to make cedar siding weatherproof. Helps by protecting the wood for up to 50 years.

Would this work on a deck?
@lindapayeur3621

It's been used in Japan for hundreds of years as a way to protect wood. So it might be good. If you used treated lumber to build your deck, it might not be wise to put flame to it. The fumes could be noxious. I think it is worth researching
