Amazing 14 Year Old Jazz Violinist, Gianna Pedregon

Музыка

Gianna's father contacted me and asked if I had room for his daughter to take some lessons. After hearing her play, you'll know why I jumped at the chance. We are having a blast together, and she's working so hard, I just had to share it with you.

    As a 14 year old violinist myself, I am so inspired by this level of musicality and am impressed at how she executed this piece so nicely. I hope to see more of her in the future and am aiming to try this in my own time as well.

    It's so cool to see this because I've had the pleasure of playing with Gianna for over a year now at The Orange County School of the Arts and this is the recognition she deserves. She has quite the ear and plays straight from the heart... I'm looking forward to playing with her more in the future!

    Wow. So many times I hear a jazz violin that compromises tonal accuracy for the sake of fast flowing motions, sometimes those slightly inaccurate motions work well as a blues, generating a feel, but mostly it's just sloppy playing as they player tries to merge improvisational techniques with pattern memory, I spent years playing like that until I gained an appreciation of tonal accuracy with experience. It's great to see such a young player show their ability not just to play, but to show their appreciation of tonal accuracy when they play, its exquisite to hear the right notes played in such a way that the appreciation for accuracy is what is communicated to the listener. All she has to do is relax now a little and she will open a world of beauty, at 14 though, maybe just keep working hard... thanks for playing!

    I’m a violinist and not sure what you mean by tonal accuracy. Do you mean intonation?

  • @saxtant

    @saxtant

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@hopelessviolin4690Intonation would refer to a rhythmic or suggestive expression of a note, along with a possible tonal inflection. I'm referring to her ability to land cleanly on a note and sustain it with a simple consistent inflection, this then shines a light on the precision of the pitch of that note within the mode. Some modes benefit from subtle discrepancies in pitch for some of their notes, in order to present a more well tempered blues for example. Her sense of pitch relations within a mode are not bluesy for this piece, but do carry a distinct feel that is appealing, being pretty close to chromatic pitch and confidently represented.

    Hi Aimee! I'm new here but this has already been a life-changing discovery for me. I have seen quite a few of your videos already and they are all SO gut. I have totally returned to the piano, even though I had practically given up. This is so motivating, that you are almost overcoming my many limitations. I believe that I'll soon be able to do your New Orleans licks. But watching you playing, improvising, jamming and teaching is simply heart-warming and incredibly motivating. I was taught classically but didn't get anywhere (much as I like listening to it). What you are showing us is a different dimension that (I'm let to believe) I might eventually learn to inhabit. On the fringes, at least. Mustn't get ahead of ourselves. I'm writing this having just watched you and Gianna Pedregon. I loved it! Seeing you communicating with other through music is a wonderful thing to behold. There is so much of that radiating out of your videos. Whether you are on a skateboard, talking about music, telling us about how you came to music (you are a spell-binding narrator!) or presenting 'your very useful' daughter Ella's scales game. " Keep practicing", she said "and you might become as good as my mum". I subscribed immediately.

    Beautiful. And amazing Jazz intuition for such a young artist. One thing I could suggest, if she's looking for ways to make a great improv even better, and this is definitely something they don't teach classical violinists, is to - every once in a while - dig a little more with the bow, especially at the start of a slide, to get a kind of crunchy sound, which you hear with good swing fiddlers.

    A former high school mate of mine is a famous jazz musician. He was considered a super-talented wonder child when he was 14, at 17 he got Berklee scholarship and won all the prestigious awards there. Much later I asked him how much did he practice in those days. His answer shocked me: 10 hours on a school day, 17 hours on weekends. Btw, he had straight As in school. Moral of the story is evident, isn't it.

    Amazing kid. She has a nice 'bite', especially on the higher strings. If there's one thing I might suggest, on improv she might dig just a bit more with the bow on the lower strings. Sounds like she was kind of skating over the top of them. Might be due to nerves, as you mentioned. Don't be afraid to slow it down as necessary. I noticed on the dim scale that this was not an issue at all. Maybe 'cause she'd been practicing that? I'm excited for her.
