She's implying that Holmes originally did want to change the world for the better but got way out of her depth and started making ethically indefensible choices to avoid accepting that Theranos had been a failure. As much as anything, Holmes was a spoiled rich kid who had been insulated from true consequences and had no idea how to deal with them when they arrived.

Right I don't get why she would wish her well especially knowing all she knows about what Holms did. She didn't innocently commit these crimes. Holms knew full well what she was doing. The story of Theranos has a central question to it: Why would Elizabeth Holmes deceive so many people? What she did was very wrong but there is value in trying to understand why she did it. To play a living person is something that should be done with this kind of understanding, because it is very personal.

To me, the answer is very clear: Holmes felt it was okay to lie about having Tech X working so long as she could use the money obtained from the lies to finally get Tech X working. That was the gamble she took, and it's not unusual in Silicon Valley. However, it IS unusual in the medical field, where lying about results can have very serious consequences. Holmes also didn't understand the science well enough to know that the endeavor would almost certainly fail. She was an overconfident fantasist. To me the more interesting question is why so many investors who ought to have done far more due diligence simply failed to do so, and piled in with their cash. Lying ought to be able to take you only so far with such huge sums on the table.

I'm sorry but clearly Elizabeth Holmes' purest intentions were greed and fame. The Dropout covered some of the ugliest things she did and made it a point to call out how she was covering up their faulty lab left and right...she was and is guilty AF. It's one thing if Amanda casually mentioned okay when she started her intentions were good and pure...sure, MAYBE, but that's clearly not where it went and that awful human Elizabeth is probably basking in the additional attention she is getting. Now the actress who played her is drooling over her? She doesn't deserve this!

  • @thesupreme950

she’s not drooling over her. she’s just acknowledging Elizabeth’s personality traits. People are complex as hell and although Elizabeth became an uncaring, entitled monster, I don’t think she started off that way completely.

People have to understand that it's okay to be enamored by a role and fascinated by a person you played, but when that person is a true life fraud..(Amanda seems to think Elizabeth actually did what she set out to do.lol. I'm kidding but she's super excited like this isn't a years old failure), it's important to try to avoid describing the real life fraud you portrayed, as an amazing person who just wanted to be respected. Elizabeth crossed that line when she refused to take NO for an answer from the subject matter experts she hired to bring her vision to fruition. Was she intelligent, of course...she was and is also a narcissist socio who now speaks in her normal voice and actually blinks in court. Empathizing with Holmes was Amanda Seyfried's job, yes. That's where it ends though. You can respectfully empathize with a person and also empathize with everyone she harmed without hailing her a hero. I would caution against making her seem like a wonderful person in the interview because a hero wouldn't have taken down a $9BN company, defrauded investors, knowingly allowed ppl to be misdiagnosed etc. A wonderful person definitely wouldn't have allowed someone to reach out to a freshly widowed woman to ask for her husband's Theranos documents/equipment back when he had very recently commited s*ic*de after being subpoenaed. Enough. These women are great actresses but Amanda Seyfriend (and Elle Fanning after playing Michelle Carter) need better media training. Be happy you got the role, be happy you performed well, but chill out in the interviews about how misunderstood and disrespected these women were.

Bc she can. Just bc she doesn't see things your way doesn't make it wrong. Alot of famous people hurt people everyday in different ways and people still look up to them. Just bc elizabeth did what she did doesn't make her a bad person. She made some mistakes. She was 19 when she started. A teenager.

She is not cool, she knew what she was doing, and even if she didnt at the start, at one point she stopped caring about any ethical dilema. She is a selflish person that only cared for money, she stands as the worst aspect of a wealth and fame obssesed society.
