when I think about where Ms. Chung started; the poverty, the challenges during her journey with staying focused, forcing herself to be persistent in achieving her dream, even more so, following THREE ASSAULTS while a college student, the gaslighting by Theranos executives, anxiety and fear, loss of her job by living up to her exceptional principles, and on and on. Ms. Chung should not only be awarded woman of the year, she'd get my vote if she ran for Congress. I'll gander over a million Americans feel the same way. And what a great speaker! Praises and respect to you, Ms. Chung! I am so proud and in awe of YOU!

Just so everyone knows; Elizabeth Holmes is NOT in jail. She is in fact free and got married a year ago. Her trial has been postponed till 2021. She's reportedly driving around and enjoying her freedom.

I was a whistle-blower a long time ago. I raised my concerns in a similar manner. The very large company I was working for destroyed my career and paid off the FBI investigator. Here is what I learned...companies are there to make money...many of them don't care how they go about it...these companies are willing to put ethics and legal concerns aside to get what they want...if anyone says or does anything contrary to this, they will act in accordance with their greed.

I have come to understand this happens MUCH more often than most people are willing to acknowledge. And companies should be held absolutely accountable for cover ups. Because you know they do it.

Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the assessment that something else is more important than fear. What a courageous woman.

But I hate how when I Google her, her description is “whistleblower”, I mean she’s a genius scientist and incredibly successful. But I wonder if other tech companies even hire whistle blowers? It’s not fair but so glad she took the risk

@@sketchur Because no CEO wants to be exposed when they do something wrong. If they wanted to be exposed, they could do it themselves easily. A lot of companies are not very bad but yet, operate in a legal gray area. Even big reputable companies like Google, Microsoft, Facebook or Apple regularly face lawsuits and are declared guilty on a regular basis. It's unlikely that such companies want employees that will help them be convicted in a court. At the end of the day, the goal of a company is to make money, not to make the world a better place. As a result, companies want employees that will make money, not employees that will make the world a better place.

She's super excited to work at Theranos for her female CEO hero Holmes but when they tell her to remove data points to make Theranos tests appear more accurate she refuses because it's bad science.

When you’re questioning your mental health, that is your intuition tipping you off. So much respect for this brilliant person who refused to be silenced.

IMO - The sad thing is that moral compass gets you nowhere in the world. If you are attractive, young, and very smart everyone believes you for some strange reason (probably due to built in genetic bias). Its the story of human kind. What really horrifies me is that men perpetrate equally horrible scams all the time, but if a woman does it everyone is suddenly interested.

I was a whistle blower. I paid a heavy price. No one stood with me. I'm still glad I did it. There are those who change things and those who watch. Change does not happen without people like us!

This is what a hero looks like. Erika, as a scientist, you have my undying respect for what you did and your integrity.

She is very brave. I’m a Clinical Laboratory Scientist and we literally go to lab school. In our degree plan we have classes like ethics and we learn how to interpret data. So we KNOW when something is not right. And the fact that Erika had this intuition says a lot. We have resources like CAP & CLSI that guide labs how to implement testing. And we also have tools like EP evaluator, and these theranos employees did not have this or know about this but they could sense something was wrong so good for them!

TED talks are full of scammers. I stopped watching the channel after they had that dude who claimed that desertification and climate change could be reversed if we released massive numbers of hoofed animals wherever there's bare ground. A cursory internet search, which TED apparently didn't do, revealed that the guy was considered as something of a joke by the scientific community and hadn't had anything published in decades.

She is one of the strongest people I've ever listened to on the web. Erika Cheung also shows us that sometimes the most courageous are not the loudest, but the people who have overcome severe traumas and quietly analyse what's going on beforehand. I can't imagine how difficult it must have felt as a trauma survivor, standing up against a tech giant like Theranos. She truly is a hero!

She also said that she felt ashamed because it took her a *month* to write the letter to initiate the complaint and I was like, you feel bad for waiting a month?! Hundreds of employees passed through that company, many of them working there for years, who never said or did anything. No judgment on them, I can understand the situation, but she definitely shouldn't feel ashamed waiting for a month to build up the courage when when no one else ever did.

Erika, if you ever read this I want you to know that YOU are a true inspiration to women. You are the kind of woman that young girls can look up to. I myself have always been a very outspoken person when I feel that something is wrong, I speak up for what’s right, I ruffle feathers, I make people uncomfortable and a lot of times it makes people dislike me, a couple times it has even cost me my job. But I don’t care. I will never just “sit down and shut up” I will stand on my soap box anytime I have a chance and say what I have to say. You did the right thing.

Erika and Tyler are heroes.

Hard work and intelligence are important, but so is a conscience.

On this Thanksgiving Day 2020, I'm very thankful for whistleblowers like Erika Cheung.

Interestingly there were nearly 700 employees at Theranos, and the one whistleblower gets heralded as the hero/heroine. Meaning? It's a culture where there are always more people willingly making a choice to let the scam rolling unless the music stops.

And I'm so glad with the science today with hiv.. I don't have it but everyone in this lifetime can possibly get it, it only takes one time to get a permanent disease. Wasn't Elizabeth Holmes's father an Enron executive? There are some striking similarities in the attitudes and behaviour of the bosses of both Theranos and Enron.

I am no expert, but I read Bad Blood 3x. Elizabeth’s father is actually an admirable character. He worked at Enron but was not part of the financial fraud and he lost his job, along with 29,000 other employees, when that company collapsed. He and Elizabeth’s mother raised her well, gave her wonderful education and opportunities. Her dad encouraged her to live a purposeful, meaningful life. He hoped she would pursue a PHD at Stanford, but she said she wanted to make money.

Elizabeth Holmes is part of the same generation. The sad thing is, our society tends to reward people with some of the traits that tend to occur very commonly in psychopaths and narcissists, such as overconfidence, extreme individualism, exaggerating your achievements, unrealistic ambition, putting your success above anything (or anyone) else, this idea of "faking it till you make it", attention-seeking behaviour, etc. And we don't reward, and sometimes even punish those who are humble/modest, have realistic expectations and aspirations, and anybody who prefers to work behind the scenes. There will always be people with integrity like Erica and people without it like Elizabeth. I think that as a society we need to reconsider who we choose to elevate and admire.

It is women like this who deserve all the attention, the fame, and the glory. An actual genuine, sweet woman. I am so tired of the fakes. Fake behaviors, fake attitudes, fake lives, and all the fake Holmes. Thank you for being so genuine, and for doing the right thing! I am so sorry that people ignored you, and didn’t believe you. That must have been so stressful. You have been through a lot, and you are here making an actual positive impact in the world. Gracias/Thank you!!🙏

When institutions have power they will make sure to intimidate you to such a point where you start to doubt yourself and fear for your life. Know that you are not alone. There will be one person or a small circle that will believe you and that's all you need to defeat an army filled with malice.

This is the ponzi scheme of science. I appreciate the manner in which Erica presented this Ted talk. As a person unfamiliar with data analysis, myths and science- it was more clear than anyone else I've heard.

This has nothing to do with science at all. They fooled investors without any science to back this up at all. There were scientists who sowed doubts about her whole idea from the beginning and people didn't listen to them, they probably thought they were trying to stop this young "visionary" trying to "democratize healthcare" out of greed. The reason Elizabeth Holmes' lies were uncovered was because this brave young lady got the FDA involved. It doesn't sound like you have much experience in the scientific field if this is how you believe it works.

indeed. ms. cheung provided more information, and more succinctly than holmes did in her combined ten years of "interviews". For each of those interviews, Holmes should receive one year of imprisonment. Each of those interviews was a forum for Holmes to tell the truth. Instead, Holmes CHOSE; she's no different than Jeffrey Epstein, and every other liar who made money by.....LYING

Had an ethical situation. There 23 years...walked out. No job..no possible way to know when a job would come available within 2 days I had a job. I believe when you do the right thing no matter how hard...God is working it out.

A hero comes in many form. An employer would lucky to hire her.

She deserves all things good in her life! What a brave , good person ! She had no rich grandparents etc but she just simply did the right thing! These two people ( Tyler & Erica ) are basically the reason millions of lives haven’t been lost

Her book could be called “The Outlier”....So inspiring!!!

Erika’s intellect and strength of character never ceases to impress me.

You did it despite your fear; that is the definition of courage.

I’ve read everything about Therenos and never knew Erica’s background. Wow! What an inspiration.

The deleting the data point story makes me wonder so deeply about how many other research groups and companies tweak data for their own means and narratives and just get away with it. I remember in college taking a statistics and ethics course and studying how people can mis-use “outliers” to warp data and in some cases have been caught for it, but my professor imagined many more slip through the cracks. This was a class I had in 2013/2014 which is oddly parallel in time with what Erica was experiencing in the real world

I once dated a narcissist. Never knew what being gaslighted meant. I now do. I feel sorry for this courageous woman who was caused to doubt her own perceptions of reality when she blew the whistle. 🥺. Good for you young lady.

What a beautiful combination of commitment, competency, conviction and heart. A big thank you for your service to humankind.

The sad thing is that George Schutz decided to believe the "schiesters" over his own grandson... :^(

There are still small numbers of people who proudly practice professional ethics, only it's NEVER the leadership.

Inspiring. I just quit my lab job as a whistleblower, and no one cared, they blocked me out and refused to speak with me. I tried taking it higher and HR wouldn't answer my phone calls or emails etc. I've been perceived as 'young' and 'new', 'it's different here', and to 'manage my expectations'. They're playing with people's lives here and no one seems to care, it's all about the money. It really affected my mental health. I'm about to start a new job after 4 months and I just hope they are legitimate and actually care about patients.

One of my grade school teachers taught me and everyone in the class a hugely valuable lesson. Throughout the year, each one of us were asked to run an errand outside the classroom for Mrs. Strange. Before leaving, she planted a scenario in all our brains. Then, after the one student left the room, she told the other students to agree with her no matter what she said when the student returned. The first few students bent to peer pressure and went along with the group. Before the end of the year, we were looking for the game as soon as she sent someone on an errand. But, we all learned about sticking to your truth and refusing to be gaslighted. RIP Mrs. Strange. You taught me so much more than math!

Denial, realization and acceptance are the three stages we all go through when faced with unexpected or troubling situations. She questioned her own sanity in the denial stage until the journalist and lawyer helped her to move to the realization stage and the rest is history.

She comes across as a genuine person. OTOH everything about Elizabeth Holmes is fake, from her voice, to her attire to her "invention".

The bravery and fortitude Erika showed as a young student was an indicator of just how big of a role she would play in protecting all of us. She really is a Hero.

Just watched The Dropout on Hulu. I was amazed that no one. Not the lead scientist who commented suicide, not the two lab directors who quit. One of whom stated talking to the Wall Street Journal reporter then chickened out. Thought to call CMS. Absolutely mind boggling.

it seems like there were NDA’s at every step of the way, that’s why Ian ended up committing suicide because he was trapped. but you’re right, would’ve been the right move to call earlier

Wonderful, brave girl. And Tyler is a fantastic lad. So much was at stake for both of them despite their different backgrounds. Glad to know that people like Erika still exist in the world.

It is really warming to know that there is an entire audience praising honesty while we watch this video. To all of those who are saying the newer generations will not be as honest as the previous ones, I would like to point out that she is from a newer generation and did the right thing while many others from older generations did not (Board of Directors Grandfather figure). Thanks to Erika’s courage! She is not only smart but so genuine!

She is one of the most influential people i have ever come across. Her scientific knowledge, intelligence and awareness about wrongdoings is brilliant to see.

This is one of the top TED talks ive seen, and perhaps the greatest female speaker I've seen on TED. She keeps to the subject, speaks clearly but still has a high tempo in her presentation. Wow!

What a brilliant woman. She gives me hope

something that's always concerned me is how the term whistleblower was looked down upon… I've seen it most tragically in the airline business. Chief mechanics stand up because they know that an airplane is dangerous and they would get laid off or fired never working in the business again… Whistleblowers are simply heroes and should be decorated as such for these are the few people the very few that protect all of us. Erika Cheung I absolutely love you and wish you all the best in life… To me you are the few the hero walking among us thank you so much

At the end of the day a thief is a thief; Elizabeth Holmes is simply a thief.

David Boies who hired private investigators to stalk and intimidate Erika, Tyler, etc should be put on trial as well.

She said she felt anything but courageous because she was scared and anxious, but that is true courage to do the right thing even when you are scared..

TED invited Elizabeth Holmes to speak and hailed her as the new tech messiah, right? Where is that speech? For some reason could not find it on TED page.

TED is great when people talk about actual, not theory and reciting motivational books.

Erika, I salute your courage. You & Tyler Schultz are true heroes.

Theranos was found out because of a reporter but imagine they weren't. What would Erika Cheung's life look like? Expansion of the No Fear Act which protects whistleblowers might be a step in the right directions. I feel in this country whistleblowers are left very unprotected. It's very difficult to whistleblow because it is one person against an institution or company or industry or a false image. People have families and have to face job insecurities, so it's a rare thing.
