Whan Ian was a kid his dad was in the RAF and was posted to an American airbase in the US. Ian attended a US school and was bullied by some of the students as he was the outsider. The kids from the First Nations community did not bully him and he struck up friendships with them. This gave him an appreciation and interest in their culture which can be seen in the way he styled himself, heard in the music and indeed seen in some of the dance moves!

The Cult are an English rock band formed in Bradford in 1983. Before settling on their current name in January 1984, the band performed under the name Death Cult, which was an evolution of the name of lead vocalist Ian Astbury's previous band Southern Death Cult. So glad they shortened the name. I saw them twice in October 1987 at Selina's Coogee Bay, Sydney after they'd released the "Electric" album. Then again on their 2013 Tour in Sydney. They finished this gig with "Sun King" and the crowd went ballistic. One of the best Rock Bands in history.
The Cult started in the very late 1970s/ early 1980s as a Deathrock band called The Southern Death Cult. The Cult has multiple amazing songs. Ian also took the place of Jim Morrisson when the Doors reformed on last time for live shows.
Guns and Roses gets credit for bringing rock music out of the doldrums of the hair metal days but what folks don't realize is that it was actually The Cult. The Cult paved the road for GnR. In fact, when GnR broke big, they were opening for The Cult on tour. When GnR lost their drummer, they reached out and took in The Cult's drummer. The Cult brought the "Rock" back into Rock and Roll.........

@mostlyharmless1918
Ай бұрын
@@jas137 Somebody from the actual US Southwest would've probably not disregarded actual individual Native Americans the way they did with the cover and videos from Ceremony. The Ceremony cover pic was used without the parents' or child's consent, and the burning of the child's image in the band's promotional videos had heavily negative religious connotations to that family. There was a lawsuit. The legal settlement seems to have had an NDA that prevents the band and the child's parents from discussing the outcome. Because of that, nobody knows whether the situation was remedied to the family's satisfaction.

As a goth/rock musician for the last 38 years, I am amaze to witness the fact that you experience, for the 1st time, my entire youth, that I heard like thousands of times... .. All these songs are carved to my brain, note by note, and they will follow me in etherals

It's criminal how underrated The Cult is.
She Sells Sanctuary. Its the best 80s song from the Cult. Listen to that banging tune. Im surprised you haven't had requests
These guys have written some of the most awesome rock songs ever. Everything between "Love" and "Ceremony" is pure gold

I think I agree with this assessment, although Beyond Good & Evil is the album that should have come after Ceremony, and is of equal quality.
Most under-appreciated band of their era. Astbury was one of the best frontmen in rock. "She Sells Sanctuary" or "Wild Flower" next.
"Painted On My Heart" by The Cult is my favorite song from them! Such a great rock ballad!
My second favorite band who sings the favorite song ever (She Sells). I can't believe I found these guys as a Sophomore in hs when nobody I knew had even heard of them. But I'm glad I did. I finally got to see them in L.A. for this album's tour. The night after I went they had a huge brawl within the band onstage. Just missed them last year up here outside of Seattle. Oh, Ian's big into mystical and Native American culture in his songs.
The Cult hasmany great songs. I think you'd especially like Edie-Ciao Baby. Its a tribute to Edie Sedgwick. It mourns her tragic early death from mental illness and drug addiction.

There was a joke in Canada that Jeff Martin of the Tea Party should have taken that gig since he looks and sounds so much like Jim Morrison already. Apparently Martin hated the comparison.

What a bluesy rock band with some serious sex appeal…Ian always reminded me a blend of Jim Morrison and Glen Danzig

Believe it or not, there are tons of folks that have never heard this type of music, for whatever reason. I found it hard to believe too, particularly as someone whose father and older brothers played rock and roll constantly when I was growing up.

As Muddy Waters once said "The blues had a baby and they called it Rock 'n'Roll".
One of the most underrated bands of all time.
Saw them on the Love tour in a little theater in 1985. At one point, Ian just dropped the mic and started singing with no amplification at all. Still sounded incredibly powerful and the women were wetting their pants....to be honest most of the guys were too. Incredible band who've had a nice, long career making rock music.
Don’t beat Elizabeth up because she chose Fire Woman. She’ll be hooked and will get to the rest eventually.

This is an amazing song and their biggest hit - the weird lack of acceptance of the Cult’s later catalog is crazy. The musicianship on Sonic Temple is MILES ahead of Electric and light years ahead of ‘Love’. Thats just a fact

@@jimilemons7680 Not for me. Sonic Temple marks the '' Comin' to America Era '' with Bob Rock and the big guitars. What we love, us ol' grinches, is the pop/goth English sounds of the post punk era. The flangers on guitars, drum machines and steady bass lines .. I went to the show of the Sonic Temple Tour in '89 and Ian was pure Magik !! It was cool... but The Cult when they were playin' Spirit Walker was VERY cool.

Saw the cult a few years ago and Ian threw his tambourine up really high to catch it, but lost it in the lights, it hit him in the face and put a big gash in his face, just kept on rocking with blood pouring all over. So freaking rock!

Saw him Seattle 5 years ago and thought he didn't bust himself in the face but he absolutely wore out and destroyed about 6 tambourines through the show. It was hilarious he just got another one and kept on going.

I love love love The Cult! I love Ian's voice and whole vibe. He's a really good.dancer too.
Ian Astbury used to come into a popular club I worked at in Vancouver, Canada, called The Luv Affair. This was at the peak of their fame. And he would come in solo and jump on the speakers and dance whenever we played a Cult song. Saw them perform in Van around that time, the backup band was John Bonhams son. 🙂

@@stevenporter8740 That bill right there sums up the musical journey The Cult took over the years. Trippy, gothy to start, to Love's swirling, pulsing, dynamic rock, then Rick Rubin turns them into a modern AC/DC for Electric, to this big arena rock flash and strut. I liked them all. Still do.

The Cult are grossly underappreciated. When this album hit in the late 80s (89 I think) it was rock magic. I couldn't get enough of it
This one hit hard, as a teenager I went to see the Aerosmith Pump tour and The Cult opened for them. My buddy and I enjoyed Aerosmith, but we came away life-long Cult fans, couldn't stop talking about how amazing they are. We talk about that night still...
Elizabeth, your old man loves and is hot for you if this song reminds him of you. Ian Astbury sings with tremendous soul and passion. The dude can dance as well. Great band!!
She sells sanctuary is iconic and gives me the colly wobbles every time I hear it
Ian has a very unique voice. You always know it's him.
One of my ALL TIME favorites!! I used to drive around in my Ford Escort with a portable CD player (the kind where you put the fake cassette into) listening to this song on repeat 😂 🎵🎸❤️🔥
Billy Duffy is my favorite guitarist....so good
OH YEA!!!! Ten Thumbs up for this selection. This group got lost in the shuffle between Hair Metal and Grunge. Very talented and that Sonic Temple album rocked! Sweet Soul Sister would be an excellent choice as well

They were also surprisingly popular with the New Wave and Goth crowd which seemed to push away some of the pure metal fans.
Ian did a stint with the remaining members of The Doors and nailed the songs. He did justice to Jim Morrison's legacy.
As everyone else has said in the comments, The Cult is definitely underrated. Got to see them live during the Electric ('87) and Sonic Temple ('89) tours and they where incredible. Ian's vocals and charisma on stage is legend and combined with Billy's guitar, the result is astounding. It's no wonder that when the Doors reformed in 2002, Doors of the 21st Century, they had Ian as their frontman. Oh and by the way, yes he is that animated on stage... or at least he was back in the day in his prime during their live shows.
He is comfortable in his body and so confident in his artistry. Star power baby!

One thing I know for certain: anyone venturing into the Gentleman's club heard this song when it came out. There were definitely some ladies that put on a show to this tune. Some were definitely fire women. So much so, that you may be left with a burning sensation. Great album. Maybe the best one they ever did. Every song on it was good. All killer. No filler.
