Always Look Twice! | Learn to drive: Basic skills

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The most common way to fail a driving test or have an accident is to cross a Give Way line when it’s not safe. This usually happens because the driver hasn’t properly checked for other traffic, and ends up forcing the other vehicle to steer or brake to avoid them. In this video we will show how looking twice at Give Way lines will help you to avoid making dangerous mistakes at junctions.

Wise advice! One of the drawbacks of not doing that is the ‘blind spot’ - or rather two of them - one in the A-frame of the car (which one of your eyes can’t see through), and the ones in both eyes. A single brief look to the right (say) can easily create the impression that there is nothing there, if you miss a small object, such as a bike. You did mention the possibility of them being hidden by shadows around 1:45, but blind spots and car structure are always there. Around 5:16, it was a good demonstration of something cutting across in front having passed on your left. Although you said that there is only a need to look to the right for “open roundabouts”, that is only true if something planning to join it from the left actually sees you and gives way. Just occasionally, they screw it up and misjudge your position and speed as you enter the roundabout.

We only need to look right before the Give Way line, and then once we are in the roundabout have a look to the left in case of danger. 👍🏼

I just wanted to ask on what gadget do you use on your car on old videos that reflects the current speed of the car in the windscreen? My instructor's car has a digital speedometer and when I bought my own car I am having a hard time determining my speed using the old needle speedometer on older cars.

It’s a head-up display that plugs into the cars on-board diagnostics port. Just search for ‘OBD HUD’ online 👍🏼

Look out for the little round blue signs on the yellow bollards - the white arrows tell you which side you can drive on 👍🏼
