It's homebrew time again! Check out this all-grain kit for an Altbier which astounded me with how drinkable it is.

Here's what they had to say about it....
A very old style of beer which is of German origin. Clean and full of character from the malt bill used, dark and bready with slight hoppy spice and floral touches. Slight sweetness is brought from the Caramunich but with a firm bitterness to finish the beer on the palette leaving you wanting to come back for more and more.

Weyermann Carafa Special type 2
Weyermann CaraMunich Type 3
Dingemans Aromatic Malt
Simpsons Malt - Munich Malt
Simpsons Malt - Finest Lager Malt
Tettnang Tettnanger - BarthHaas® Pure Hop Pellets (15 grams)
Hallertauer Magnum - BarthHaas® Pure Hop Pellet (30 grams)
WHC Dried Yeast -LAX - 11g Packet (1 pack)
Method
Beer Style (main): German Ales
Beer Style (sub): German-Style Altbier
Batch Size: 23
Original Gravity: 1.051
Final Gravity: 1.012
ABV %: 5
IBU: 46
Mash efficiency: 80
Brewing equipment:
THE MASH
Temperature °C (Step 1): 68
Length (mins) (Step 1): 60
Temperature °C (Step 2): 75
Length (mins) (Step 2): 10
THE BOIL
Boil time (mins): 60
Hop / kettle additions and timing:
30g Magnum @ 60min
15g Tettnang @ 15min
Yeast: WHC - LAX - 1 Packet
Fermentation temperature/steps: Ferment this on the colder side - 18c until fermentation has completed, up to 4 weeks conditioning time is also ideal for this style.
Comments:
This beer wants to be fermented cool to allow for little to no yeast character being imparted on the beer but do ensure it ferments fully, you can support this by either adding a second packet of yeast or creating a yeast starter.

    Went to an Alt Bier bar in Dusseldorf - good fun. They are served in small glasses and the staff keeps it coming without you ordering a fresh glass.

    do they still do this? I know with Kolsch they were looking to stop it with tourists.

    I used to drink alt bier on occasions when I lived in north Germany back in the 80's and I have it on my list to brew this year. I seem to remember that it was served in quite small glasses, but I'm not 100% sure about that.

    I know Kolsch is. They tried to stop it apparently as too many tourists were saying they didn’t ask for the beers to be topped up or were being taken advantage of 🤷🏼‍♂️.

    Greetings from Germany. Altbier is a great Style and a very tatsy beer I think. I just don‘t think LAX suits the style very well. I‘d recomend a dedicated german Ale yeast gozdawa oga9 or fermentis k-97
