What's funny is, in the Barbie line canon, Allan is Midge's boyfriend. They were introduced in the early 1960's as the "sporty youthful" teens to contrast Barbie & Ken's "mature fashion icon" teen looks. Part of the pearl-clutching controversy around the pregnant Midge doll, at the time of her release, was that she and Allan were implied to be un-wed new parents XD
@tinseltina
3 ай бұрын
no they were married. they had wedding dolls. barbie brides are all "barbie dresses up for a day, or barbie is dreaming of her wedding" but midge and allen were officially wed since the 90s i think. barbie was a bridesmaid. they also had parents in-law for rhat pregnant midge line iirc. but ppl REALLY didnt like the concept anyway.

In a way, Alan and Ken represent masculinity as a whole. Ken represents the whole facade men put up because society dictates them to be tough, emotionless, and always asserting dominance by any means necessary. Alan is the representation of a man at his core without the standards - content with himself, just existing, and not having to pretend.

I was this in my early 20s. Was in the marine corps, in great shape, and like, one girl thought I was cute. Because of this, I was invited to hang out with dudes who would call themselves “alpha males”, liked to workout, and would go out to the clubs/bars to pick up chicks. I would feel like Allan whenever I hung out with these guys. I was more interested in anime, drawing, movies, video games, and being on the internet outside of the working out, eating healthy, and being in the military. Not that my interests were “better” than theirs. What I enjoyed and preferred didn’t really align with their interests of bagging babes, focusing on lifting weights for a nice body, and being a badass. Years later I realized we weren’t really THAT close of friends. We were cool but it was a situation I tolerated because they invited me to hang out with them, and they were the friends I had in the military However, none really had an interest in what I was interested or what I had to say. They weren’t evil or bad people, but some things just didn’t vibe with me. We just were different. I got older and grew into my own person who doesn’t use the term “alpha males” or wants to bang chicks every time I go out.

Jonathan Groff was supposed to be Allan and man we dodged the bullet. Groff fits more for Ken instead of Allan. Cera's awkward energy is what makes him a superior casting for Allan than Groff
The tag lines "Ken's Buddy" and "All of Ken's clothes fit him" are literally from the box lid of the 1964 Allan doll. Not manufactured for the movie!
Allan blends into the background so well, you can always tell a Milford man.

@tinseltina

no they were married. they had wedding dolls. barbie brides are all "barbie dresses up for a day, or barbie is dreaming of her wedding" but midge and allen were officially wed since the 90s i think. barbie was a bridesmaid. they also had parents in-law for rhat pregnant midge line iirc. but ppl REALLY didnt like the concept anyway.
@solracer66

@@tinseltina The first release of Midge and the kids was missing the wedding band. They quickly retooled and added the ring and a photo of Alan (one L by then) on the box.
Michael Cera is honestly one of the most essential actors of this century. Juno and Barbie would not have been effective without him. I’m not a Scott Pillgram fan, but I assume he would be difficult to recast. He has an innocence and vulnerability that cannot be replicated.

True. Let’s not forget he was able to fight off so many construction workers. He’s a one man army who deserves appreciation. He’s also so respectful to all the women. He’s a cinnamon bun.
Allan: "Not one person would care if Allen was in the real world. In fact, it happened before." Dam, I don't know what it is, but that line felt like it hit harder than it should :(
I love that Scott Pilgrim mode is just a switch Micheal Cera can turn off and on.
Allan has my whole heart tbh
Michael Cera doing a masterful performance. You really feel his Alan-ness. The "I'm not like everyone here, I just don't quite fit in".
When I saw the movie on theatres with my best friend there was a group of teenage girls next to us and everytime Allan showed up they applauded. I agree, he's great

This man's canonically going to be a father.

Allan is best Allan❤
Seeing Allan in those shorts reminds me irresistibly of that bit from Arrested Development where everyone keeps going on about how George Michael Bluth has legs indistinguishable from those of a beautiful woman.
all i wanted in the end was for Allen to have his own spin off film tbh
I love when he’s just whaling on the construction Kens and nobody questions it
Allan is the only one who knows how to fight. Good for the Kens he didn't participate in the beach off
Allan is an ally, and we love him for that! 💕
Watching this makes me miss that time I watched Scott Pilgrim with my friends.
"Great cheer, Kens" couldn't have been delivered better
I've never felt more seen then when Allan tried to use a chair to jump over a fence before going around.
"All of N'SYNC: Allan. Yes, even him!" Love the subtle Justin Timberlake shade!
The "no barbie or ken should be living in the shadows" "or allan" is such an enby mood ngl. Same vibes as when people go "all men and women" and you just kinda stand there like "what about me" lol. Long story short, Allan is the best

HES LITERALLY ME FRRRFRR‼️‼️‼️
I love michael cera. He's been a teenager my whole adult life. Nobody plays awkward as good as him
Allan is the best one
In a way, Alan and Ken represent masculinity as a whole. Ken represents the whole facade men put up because society dictates them to be tough, emotionless, and always asserting dominance by any means necessary. Alan is the representation of a man at his core without the standards - content with himself, just existing, and not having to pretend.
Didn't those Kens know that Allan is the best fighter in the province?
Everyone talking about how Ken is "literally me" when I'm just standing off in the corner seeing Allan thinking "he literally *IS* me." Literally the scene at 0:27 where Allan is just sitting on the couch while all the Kens act like dudes/toxic men is literally how I feel when hanging out with my male friends😭
