    Lol. Ikr? He makes that blanket statement then rattles off a laundry list. Not to mention I never shoot events wide open. It would just slow me down. And you don't need 4 speedlights. You can do great work with one or 2 speedlights (not that 4 is wrong or whatever. Just not what I need to do what I need done).

    Some good advice however for those that are starting and doing some of these style events learn how to control light. Start with at least 2 flashes (i agree). But you must learn a few things. 1. LEARN HOW TO use rear sync, slow sync, hi speed syncs with your flash. 2. Learn how to drag your shutter and use ambient light , especially indoors. 3. Learn how to White Balance (temp) with the flash ans without the flash ( i have wb settings for with and without flash.). 4. Bounce is your friend. If shooting in dark environments that may not reflect light , still use the flash. The image maynot be perfectly exposed. It won't. However the flash still registers. When you go to post editing you will be blown away by what is revealed when you touch a few sliders. MAGIC happens.

  • @iamwhatiam6281

    I also prefer that combo because the grid reduces the diffusion area and add to the frame a more natural vignette effect (i shoot in f5 so not as much aperture vignette as addding a grid). in my case I never use the dome for baunch the light. I don’t use the grip for groups or in open air if I need more power

    I really like you magsphere sysem. But for me...since a grid focuses the direction of light in a particular direction whilst preventing light spilling all over the subject area.... vs the diffusion dome, which softens the light by diffusing it and dispersing it in all directions... I just use the dome (and diffuse the light) at less power. But I'm actually going to do this against a wall to see "how" the light hits the wall. Thanks for the tip

  • @eliaspap8708

    Invest in one good camera, one good zoom lens like 24-70 and 3 good flashes. No need for diffusers, only for the one on camera, but grids and color gels would be helpful. Put one flash on camera and 2 off camera on light stands. It is an investment, but it’ll be worth it.

    I only have XT30 with standard XF 18-55mm f2.8-4 kit lens and speedlight (quadralite stroboss 60 evo speedlight), but I'm wondering if I could start making some additional money with photography because people are still happy with quality of my photos despite my cheap gear (so far I was shooting for free). I have a normal job with a lot of free time (around 10 days-off in a month), so I could arrange quite a few photoshoots during that time. But I feel like I need to invest into better gear first because XT30 has too many shortcomings for professional line of work (no IBS, no double memory card slot, small viewfinder, no WR), and not to mention my kit lens is very slow (f/3.6) at 35mm (50mm FF equivalent) and it also has weak DOF. John, you are a professional photographer, so I'm wondering what you would buy if you were in my shoes? I have some savings, so I'm willing to spend around 4000$ for better gear. XH2 looks beautiful and it has all features I want, but I will also need better lenses for sure. I guess xf 33mm f1.4 is a must, but I also want portrait lens. I'm leaning towards 90mm f2, however your portraits with 56mm f1.2 also looks amazing, so it's hard to choose one.

  • @micknificent

    You already answered your own question. People are still happy with the quality of your photos despite your cheap gear. Keep up the good work, master your current gear, save your money and slowly upgrade your gear when its time. No need to go broke buying expensive gear. Another suggestion is to spend your money first on classes on the business side of photography.

    @@micknificent Thank you for your detailed response. My XT30 has some limitations, but overall I'm happy with picture quality, so I can continue shooting with it for a little bit longer. My kit lens however is not good at all, so I want to buy something better, even if I will not make any money with it. I want fast lens with shallow DOF, because it's very difficult and time consuming to add DOF in PS (especially on busy backgrounds).

    I’m not too familiar with Fuji cameras. But I believe their sensors are smaller than the full frame. I would start with a lens that’s a 50mm or 35mm 1.2 or 1.4 equivalent. I would go for the widest aperture available. When I started out doing event photography I started with the 24-70mm 2.8 and the 70-200 mm for Canon. My first prime was a 50mm 1.8. It was cheap and not very reliable. Now that I own the RF 50mm 1.2 its one of the best lens I’ve ever owned.

    @@micknificent My XT30 is APS-C camera, so if want to shoot at f4 (my kit lens has f4 at 55mm focal length) then DOF is only comparable to f/6.1 on FF camera. With new XF 56mm f/1.2 WR lens I would get something comparable to 85mm f/1.8 on FF, so that's a big step up from my current kit lens.

    this is a beginner's guide from a beginner, do not pay attention. For good, you need to set the zoom to more than 100 so as not to flood the entire dance floor with light. Or even buy 4 stands and not use the flash on the camera. But for those who shoot with one flash all the time, this is suitable as an initial stage.

    When shooting at wide apertures, you have to be proactive and consious at angling yourself with the focus planes your subjects create and directing when needed.

  • @Chapa324

    @Chapa324

    Жыл бұрын

    @@JEDINITE30 you direct dances or events that happen real time because of a shot you need? Studio work isn't what is shown here, obviously if it's studio work or you're posing people you can prevent unfocused people if shooting wide open. But again, you're not going to sit there and direct a groom and bride during their first dance or wedding cermony because you need them on the same plane because you chose to shoot at 1.4

  • @JEDINITE30

    @JEDINITE30

    @@Chapa324 If your not directing, then the angle is what makes it happen. Of course you're not going to direct them during a dance, but you can always change your angle/position and time your shots when they're on the same plane, timing when one of them is facing you and the other's back is to you, backing up and wider lenses also increase DOF. I'm not saying that you can't close your aperture, but shooting wide open can be accomplished in more applications then what most people are comfortable with. Angles, angles, angles. practice, practice, practice.

    As a photographer that's about to shoot many more weddings, I find this quite helpful. A few questions, if you don't mind my asking: Should one not use larger, heavier modifiers, like softboxes? Is that seen as being cumbersome, or in the way? And do you set each on camera flash to be the master of both off camera flashes, or is one the master of each? Love the videos my brotha, keep it up.
