My first day in Kerala, India was already shaping up to be the start of an epic adventure through the state. After enjoying some incredible food, visiting a market, and getting an outstanding haircut, shave, and massage, I headed out to get some lunch! Come along with me to a restaurant serving all you can eat Indian vegetarian food in Kerala, including a banana leaf sadhya for only $2.78 in Trivandrum, India!
For lunch, my boy Vishnu took me to an incredible spot called Mothers Veg Plaza in the capital city, Trivandrum. There, we’d be eating a dish called sadhya, which is a huge feast served on a banana leaf.
Mothers Veg Plaza is the only place that serves sadhya 365 days a year and it’s super popular. Together, it only cost us 441 rupees, so about 220 rupees each, which translates to less than $3 USD!
The restaurant was super packed and there was no queue. Basically, you wait around near the tables as people eat, and then you have to jump on it as people get up to leave. It’s the only way to get a seat! It’s pretty crazy!
While we waited, I took a look around at everyone eating. The food looked so incredible, especially the chutneys, bread, and rice. Finally, we got a table and our banana leaves. You wash them off and dry them before you’re served. They say the leaf enhances the flavor of the food!
We were served a bunch of different dishes, including a large mound of rice, papadum, ginger pickle, mango, gooseberry, pineapple chutney, bitter gourd chutney, banana chips, and much more.
I started with the banana chips, which were like a sugar bomb and full of banana flavor. It was crunchy, airy, and salty! Then, I took the papadum and mixed it into the rice and dal. The dal was light and the papadum gave it a light and airy crunch. Then, I went for the gooseberry and pickled lime, followed by an amazing mango, cucumber, and some phenomenal pineapple.
Next was rice and pineapple with a salty chili, followed by more rice with sambar and banana. Then, I added a bit of everything for a true explosion of zesty, tangy, and fruity textures!
After that, I crunched into some papadum and continued moving all of the remnants of the other dishes to one side of the leaf to make room for the payasam desserts that were coming. I mashed up a banana with two types of sweet payasam (one rice-based, one lentil-based) with jaggery, which you then mix with crushed papadum.
Next, I tried a rice pudding-like payasam with sweet chapati, and another with vermicelli noodles! Then, I had a curd-based curry with pineapple as a digestive, followed by a second digestive of sambar with rice. Finally, I ended with some ginger and folded my leaf up for the waitress to take it away. Before we left, I met an awesome fan from Chennai!
Wow! What an incredible food experience! Trying all those dishes is something I will remember for the rest of my life. There were so many flavors, from sweetness, bitterness, tanginess, and more. My stomach was so full!
From there, Vishnu and I hopped on his bike and headed toward the beach, where we’d go to see a palace. I wore a helmet, as it’s now a law in Kerala that everyone has to wear one on a motorcycle. The streets of India are a wild place and there aren’t really any traffic laws, so you have to be a magician on your bike to get around!
Then, we arrived at Napier Museum and gardens. The museum is famous and used to be a palace. It reminded me of a big mansion inside a park. It’s surrounded by gardens and it was nice and breezy.

Bro i am a malayali and i spend 4 years in tamil nadu i like the chappatti kuruma and thyrusadam very much ,first i was not a fan of it but gradually i like it very much ..the taste take back some beautiful memories .and the chiken 65 and hakka noodils from the college canteen ..

Aswain I don't believe in that statement. Yes there is some economics involved but their experience bring more exposure and mutual understanding of our culture and our lifestyle. i am an avid non veg lover.. i eat almost all edible beings from land and from sea ..but trust me, the fullness and the content feeling you get after a good veg "sadhya" is unexplainable & heavenly.. this should be ate on a warm afternoon..and that sleepy feeling you get later out of the fullness is also unmatchable 😁

We love to see your expression after eating kerala food..I live in US I have seen very few Americans intrested in vegetarian food and probably a very small fraction of ppl tried southern indian food and you are so comfortable eating without any utensils and the spice is not bothering you Wow!

After having the meals, you have to fold the upper leaf over the lower half to your side...not the opposite way like you did. That means you are satisfied with the food served. Lower half will also be folded over the upper half, but this can be done solemn functions like death etc. Just because you are teaching him, I am saying "teach him the right way". In Kerala we fold it just like how it's shown in the video. In my region it means that we are done and we don't need more rice. Upper leaf over lower leaf means you are not happy with the meal.

I am from Bangalore but a malayali by birth. Really feeling happy to see foreigners come to India especially kerala and taste our foods. I know its really hard for them to eat with hand since they only practiced with spoons, forks or chopsticks. And this guy not just ate with hand but he even enjoyed eating. 😍

I am grateful to be born in India, we have like tons of cuisines from east to west, north to south of India, i will definitely go to Kerala to eat this with its full authentic taste.
I love my non-veg but when it come to veg Kerala meals.. It's simply delectable and your heart feels contented after eating it.. For me red rice with sambhar/dal, mor curry and pappadum does the trick .. The occasional toran is good too .🤤🤤

South INDIAN food can never go wrong anywhere !! It's always been so healthy and tasty you mix anything in the dish and its gonna taste phenomenal even if you mix chutney with the rice and eat.. its gonna be tasty ❤️
