    Just think about it as a way that you helped him keep his brother in the world a bit longer by sharing a little bit of him even after he was gone. It still hurt, but he loved his brother... and still loves him. Sharing a little bit about him--even if it's just his nickname--can help him remember the good times.

    Ik this is mostly jokes, but for the people with anxiety, my advice to you guys is learning thought-stopping techniques. It worked for me Examples my therapist taught me: 1. Lightly slapping your knee/arm/wall and saying after that hit you stop thinking about this stuff 2. Loudly saying sth like "stop" (or mouthing it) 3. Deciding you only think about negative things at more comfortable times (for me it's when i'm on a walk) and consciously postponing the thought It takes a while to sink in but once your brain associates the slap/word/thought with thought-stopping it genuinely works

  • @41-Haiku

    @41-Haiku

    You can usually prevent those thoughts from coming back and bothering you in the first place (outside of diagnosable conditions such as OCD that cause ruminating thoughts). For recurring embarrassing memories: - *Say out loud to yourself, "Next time that thing (or something like it) happens, I will do [Specific Better Thing] instead."* (I swear this simple exercise has completely cured me of almost all of my embarrassing/anxiety-provoking memories. This needs to be made common knowledge. Your brain is reminding you of the danger--usually social danger--because it is trying to protect you and keep you from doing it again. If you reassure it that you've received the message, it can relax.) For any recurring thought that is bothering you: - *Write out the recurring thought thoroughly and completely.* (Using a physical pen or pencil may help more. Exporting your thoughts onto a page breaks the narrow loop inside your mind and helps you to process the content of those thoughts.)

    Found saying a mantra when you want the thought to stop has helped. The more you do it the quicker you can nip it in the bud. Mine is "Out of sight, Out of mind, we'll do better next time!" Then shift all your focus on what you're doing in that moment. That's just what has helped me, hope it can help someone else too! :)

    Instructions unclear, been doing this for years and instead of stopping the thoughts, I've been looking like a lunatic mouthing words to myself, talking to myself, and actively hurting myself every few seconds 😅 (̶t̶h̶i̶s̶ ̶m̶a̶y̶ ̶h̶a̶v̶e̶ ̶l̶e̶f̶t̶ ̶m̶a̶r̶k̶s̶ ̶b̶y̶ ̶t̶h̶i̶s̶ ̶p̶o̶i̶n̶t̶)̶

    Countering with physical slapping seems like a fast track to self injury in a group of people prone to it. The tip to write the thought down is excellent. In cognitive behavioral therapy, the first step is to notice the thoughts in the first place! Only when you’ve enunciated the thought can you counter it with an alternative narrative. Love to everyone out there who struggles with anxieties of all kinds.

    @@41-Haiku thank you for bringing up OCD. People only think it means obsessive rituals, but it can also involve obsessively ruminating over an unpleasant idea. I used to get unwanted intrusive thoughts as a kid that sent me tailspinning with severe guilt for hours. I’m fortunate that an SSRI was very helpful.
