I just read Piranesi at the beginning of this month & I already want to pick it up to read again. Definitely a contender for my favorite book of the year.

IMMEASUREABLE!!!!

For japanese literature: Travelling Cat Chronicles, If Cats Disappeared from the World, Diary of a Void, The Housekeeper and the Professor, Memory Police, Lonely castle in the mirror, The miracles of the Namiya General Store, In a Grove, Kamikaze Girls, Kokoro. There's so much more but these were just a few I could think of! Japanese literature is a treasure trove.

I loved The Dragon Keeper and the whole tetralogy! I didn't actually know this was part of a bigger series, so I read this and then went back to the beginning and started with Assassin's Apprentice haha

Please do make a reading vlog for those three thriller books. Your thriller reading vlogs are the best!!

I am so happy you mentioned the spear cuts through water! It is one of the most magnificently written fantasy with one of the best realised worlds. It will take you on an absolute rollercoaster of emotions and has some of the best chapters I have ever read in any book. I just can't recommend this enough.

The Last Thing I’ll Ever Write (Part 1) by Adam Lauver: This is a short play but reads like a nov. Gorgeous writing. I think based off of other likes of yours this might be a good option. I read it in an hour. Space Opera by Catherynne Valente: Also, something a bit different but along the same vibe and has a sequel coming. Hell’s Library trilogy by A.J. Hackworth: not sure if you’ve already read these but they are my favorite urban fantasy. Starts with The Library of the Unwritten. Read these pretty quickly as well. (But this might be librarian bias. Secret info on librarians…..gift them books about books or librarians and you can’t go wrong.)

Can't recall if you've read this already but How Do You Live? by Genzaburo Yoshino is a brilliant Japanese book!! And If Cats Disappeared from the World should be perfect for you as well. Enjoy your Piranesi re-read, sounds like a great way to end your year on a high note 🥰

for japanese translated books: mieko kawakami’s “breasts and eggs” is tied for my all time favorite book so i’d def rec that n anythin from her!! i also enjoy banana yoshimoto - “kitchen” is her most popular release

I will say, don't go into A Study in Drowning thinking it's about faeries. There is a fairy king, but it's more of an allegory for something else. It's really not a fairy story. It's really beautiful and atmospheric and I really loved it, but it is not a fairy story. Also, very excited you're reading A Spear Cuts Through Water. It's one of my absolute favorite books of all time. It's really confusing in the beginning but give it time, it's so worth it.

Ooh, I started The Spear Cuts Through Water! It has a refreshingly strange and unique narrative style. I haven't had time to finish it coz I was busy, but I'm picking it up again soon.

I am on the 3rd book of the Rain Wild Chronicles. I had to PUSH through the second book, but the third is making it all worth it and we get back to characters we know and like. It reads far more like YA in pace and style which helps with how quickly I am trying to get to the final Fitz trilogy!

Yup 2023 is one of the quickest years that breezed through. I don't know about you but maybe because people have done a lot this year compared to the past couple of years? (Hello lockdown, quarantine 👋🏽). I remember when people were saying, January 2023 is too long and boom look where we are now, we are back to December. 🤣
