Honestly, I would say the Crescent City books by Sarah J Mass are worth a shot. There are adult themes and things going on in the books, as she is well known for. But it is actually handled well, fits into the plot, and doesn't overstay its welcome so far. The story is interesting, and it has some downright action-packed and brutal moments in it that are awesome. However, take all this with a grain of salt. As I learned with this author, she can turn everything on its head and not in a good way, and there are only 2 of the five book series out at the moment.

@Deni-mt9bj oh for sure there was that in the book, I just thought considering it was used in relation to the plot device for the book, and not just thrown in there for fillers sake, like a lot of those style of books tend to do, it would be a better option then some others.

This is why I think fantasy romance needs to be marketed in the romance section as it is its own distinct thing from adult fantasy.

Totally agree with you! Also it's highly annoying when there's so many romantasy books between the actual fantasy and you more or less have to look inside the book to see if it's free of spice. Nothing against spice or romance, but I want real fantasy where said topics are basically bystanders to the story, but not the center of it

@@sk4348 i actually prefer fantasy romance myself, (tho not interested in any of the popular series) but hate that it is mixed with with regular fantasy because they are so night and day. the bookstores aren't even consistent about it, like stuff like fourth wing and acotar is in fantasy while similar stuff such as plated prisoner and fbaa are in romance. which means if the reader wants similar stories you have to look in both sections and its really hard trying to navigate the fantasy section because its not romance. i think it would be good for both readers to separate the two so readers get what they want more easily.

Literary would be shelved in general fiction here. But romance would basically include smut, erotica and regular romance stuff you see in regency and contemporary. There is also paranormal but fantasy romance has started to replace that. It just needs to be better understood bc adult fantasy should be for books that focus on fantasy elements first. General rule of thumb is if you can remove the romance and still have a story then it’s not romance. If the story falls apart it’s romance first most.

  • @Merian8

But it is still adult fantasy, it simply has romance. This book isn’t focused on the romance, so it wouldn’t make sense to distinguish it as romance fantasy. Yes, I’ve read it.

The thing the botters me the most about those "romantasy" books is that they read like YA, in both the writing and the more superficial exploration of themes, and at the same time posess A LOT of gore and sexual content. It causes confusion, since it feels like the writters dont really know for whom they writting for, teens or adults. I loved your video tho 😂 your reaction was so funny

I think when you say "it reads like YA", you are probably referring to the fact that it has... subpar writing. Which is often the case for 90% of the books published in the YA genre. However, the issue comes when these subpar writers are also horny adults who are eager to write smut and 'adult' themes. So they go ahead and write these books, but because their writing capabilities are nowhere near actual literary authors, they just shoehorn it into the YA section where they know it will be accepted. Hence, there's no real audience they are writing it for. It's just their own smut fantasies vomited out on a page. Now, I'm not saying that ALL YA books are subpar. It is just that in the last few decades the genre has become so inundated with mediocrity that people don't even question it anymore.

There is a warning in the book telling you what it contains and the front cover isn’t subtle so the publisher or author cant be blamed on this one. Also for me this not proper fantasy it’s romantasy where fantasy is in the background and is just used for romance purposes which is why there is no major world building.

Out of curiousity, what is considered smut? There's a big difference between sex for sex sake and sex for a reason. Are novelists supposed avoid sex in novels? I mean there are a majority of writers out there writing terrible sex scenes and a majority of such sex scenes are hetero (so that's a whole other conversation).

I don't mind it there is some romance in my Fantasy books, I don't mind if some things are implied but I rather not have the details. Yeah i really hate the whole enemies to lovers thing, mostly because of how unrealistic it is, it's like a 13 year old romanticizing the way two people simply don't like each other, i just can't take it seriously (especially when they make grown people act like horny teenagers), also according to most authors an "enemy" is just a mean person, like sure lol. I was gonna read the book but luckily my cousin warned me about it's actual "plot" if we can call it that.

if you're looking for Christian sci fi and fantasy I'd recommend: Brother Wolf by Eleanor Bourg Nicholson - Christian take on werewolf stories A Bloody Habit by Eleanor Bourg Nicholson - Christian take on vampires Eifelheim by Michael Flynn - first contact story in Middle Ages Germany A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter Miller Jr - Catholic monastery in the aftermath of World War 3 And Tim Powers' work in general has a Christian undercurrent but especially in his novel Declare. Though his work does lean towards historical fiction than just fantasy.

this is how I felt reading this book too! started off alright very YA and then it just went weird. I feel it would of been better without the weird dragon shhmuut. I think this would be higher on my like list if this stayed YA and left out the random dragon spice and had more world building.

8:43 sooooo I'm guessing you've never read anything in Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series? 😂 Two words: mating flights. Pern was one of the OG dragonrider series and, contrary to initial appearances, technically is sci-fi rather than fantasy. For romantasy recs that an epic fantasy reader would enjoy, I'm gonna recommend Melanie Cellier's Spoken Mage series. She's self-published and writes clean romance. Most of her back catalogue is fairytale retellings, but the Spoken Mage series is an original world and I found it a nice fun read as someone who almost exclusively reads epic fantasy. The romance storyline is pretty trope-y (common-born girl discovers she has special magic; gets sent to magic school where the brooding, aloof prince happens to be her classmate) but there's a decent epic fantasy storyline and magic system that is the main focus. If you enjoy the Spoken Mage books, there's also a sequel series set 20 years later called the Hidden Mage which follows the next generation and ties up some of the smaller loose ends to do with the magic that weren't resolved by the end of the Spoken Mage series.

This was the same issue I had with the book. First half was fun, school vibes, challenges, making friends, overcoming fears and using her knowledge from being a scribe to survive. ..... Then the second half happens : / . goes to ultra horny, and unhealthy obsession with Riorson and depletes the plot. When you were reading about his muscles I spat my water out! It sounds ridiculous when ya read it out loud. I cant stop laughing.

The part about their dragons being horny is actually so… minimal? It’s talked about so much in this video that it sounds like it’s recurrent or super important but it’s not. It’s a single scene from the MCs POV who happens to be feeling what they’re feeling, but the scene is focused on HER, not on the dragons. It is weird to sexualize dragons and I did find it weird to read, but about the dragons themselves, it’s very minimal! I think it’s a bit blown out of proportion in this video, tbh!

Not every book is for everyone! I think to be a christian or not to be has nothing to do with the review of the book and repeating the same argument doesn`t make it better. Probably this book isn`t for me either, but I`m a little turned off (sic! I`m no dragon!) by this sarcastic style. So, there you have my honest comment, but I don`t want to offend you, I like your other stuff.

I made it through The 4th Wing then it was time for Iron Flame, both audiobooks. Needless to say I couldn't make it through the Iron Flame. Between the narrator's burbs and teenie bop obsession with Xaden I couldn't finish. I was drawn to the dragons and magic powers of course but The Fifty Shades of Grey/Twilight/Eragon mashup was too much. All of the high ratings have to be from girls from the ages of 15 to 25. I thought I could make it through it but nah, I'm good.

This is a teen tv drama where the dumb prose is on and the author thinks that romance is p@rn. Why it has this much hype and this high ratings? Bc nobody will read it and rate it outside acotar fans. That’s it. And Twilight fans. That gives the level.

@@eurydiceshadowcry Any readers who were squicked out by Fourth Wing's dragon-influenced-lust should read content warnings for Pern, which literally does this in a non-consensual way with the main characters. Dragonflight (Book 1): "He had not thought to control his dragon-incited emotions, and Lessa’s first s3xual experience had been violent...He had been a considerate and gentle bedmate ever since, but, unless Ramoth and Mnementh were involved, he might as well call it r@pe." Several of the Pern books do this. Dragonsong does not, and is probably the safest/best option of the early books. Just wanted to warn anybody who was interested in dragon books, I was not expecting SA in the Pern books and it caught me offguard.

This is how I felt about book 1 the Bound and the Broken. It felt like AI had mashed together Eragon, Magician and WOT and thrown in plot craters and zero ability to write females. Petrik assured me book 2 is a huge step up, and most give book 2 a 4 star rating. So I am confused at the huge rating book 1 gets ?? The hype is enormous round this series. However I do note main KZreadrs are avoiding rating book 1 on its own, always pairing it with a later novella. Probably the worst book I have read in years on prose, plot, characters and complete lack of anything original, but it’s a YT darling. So seeing Fourth Wing get similar hype I have avoided Fourth Wing 😊. It’s as if the hype blocks most from giving a serious review in case the fans go for them. Most fun dragon bond find this year is the SPFBO 9 The Blood-born Dragon by JC Rycroft. Squid is just adorable, and Des not your standard “heroine” very engaging and easy to read. I finished it and just wanted more so grabbed the prequel novella A Hired Blade, also great ❤

I loved this style of video! - I've definitely dnf'd books where the smut gets to much. As a Christian myself, I just don't want to read that sort of stuff. It's meant to be kept between you, your spouse & God. If you're looking for Christian sci-fi/fantasy, I highly recommend Ted Dekker's Circle series as well as his book with Frank Peretti; House. It's more horror but as I know you've entioned you've read Stephen King, you'll be fine. God bless & keep up the good work 💙
