    "The ones you hate grow fat on their greed" might actually be a reference to how Dutch despises the people of Saint Denis, Blackwater and people like Cornwall and views stealing their wealth as his way of punishing them. To him criminals and outlaws are 2 different things. To him outlaws are people who live free of a twisted rotten system and fight for the little man. Despite this however his view is not popular and the rich will continue to grow and expand until it catches up to the west.

    I also thought this. But that fortune is only told to John in the epilogue. Maybe it's calling back to Dutch's contempt for the elite? Definitely think the "whatever the cost" is delivered so ominously that it is likely talking about John's demise.

    The circle fortune could also be about the revenge. John revenges Arthur and kills Michah - this leads to Ross tracking John down and killing him eventually - which leads to Jack becoming an Outlaw and revenge John through killing Ross.

    I agree with this one too, cause they mention a lot since the start about revenge, Arthur really thinks that's not a good path, Charles even mention it to John in their way to find Micah, Arthur never wanted revenge, and is sad that Dutchs obssession with killing Colm, Cornwall, and Bronte lead him to destroy the gang, and John seeking for revenge lead him to be found by Ross, and now Jack made the same decision, a circle of violence.

  • @Sam87hitk

    @Sam87hitk

    Жыл бұрын

    Yeah, Arthur's last words to John are explicit instructions to break the circle and not come back to any aspect of the gang life, even to avenge him. But, John's own code of honour compels him to return to the gunslinger life to avenge the friend/older brother who died to give him his current life. Micah's crime spree attracts the Pinkertons and no doubt they find out that Dutch was at Mount Hagen with the stolen Blackwater money. Sadie and Charles leave the country with their share, but John remains and presumably pays off a bunch of large loans in one go with the money. That, in the end, seals his fate and completes his circle.

  • @kingofsting19
    @kingofsting192 жыл бұрын

    I always took the "we killed him and replaced him with nothing" line to be about God. The Soothsayer has that one line about gods dying, and also references the age of man ending to be replaced with machines and the destruction of the natural world. The Soothsayer is, in spiritual prose, highlighting how industrialism and capitalism destroys not just the environment, but the ability of people to live the kind of free and open lives that folks like Arthur want. Additionally, you have that bit in the epilogue where John meets Evelyn Miller, who gives a monologue about how the Earth itself is God. By choosing the destruction of the natural world over the preservation of it, in the pursuit of money and things ("we are in the age of things") then we have all chosen to kill God and replace him with nothing, just like those barren landscapes that used to be woods, and are now just empty skyline and railroads.

    I like that there could be a second interpretation to the "she'll return to you" fortune. If you interpret it as Abigail returning to John after she leaves in the RDR2 epilogue, it could mean that when the time comes for John to be destroyed (murdered) Abigail will also be destroyed with grief as a result. Also since Abilgail's death is never explained it's possible she died from suicide or heartbreak. Dunno just another cool way to look at it

When Arthur dies you become John, when John dies you become Jack… and if we get a third game, we’ll probably die again and play as someone else. It never ends.

Than we need a (now) dead gang member, Dutchs mentor or someone else, who guides Dutch through the very first years as outlaw and head of the VdL Gang. Someone like a younger Hosea. 2:17 To me, at least, she didn't allude to Dutch but rather Mr. Leviticus Cornwall and maybe also Mr. Angelo Bronte. Because of his tycoons and rich assets, it basically makes him in his mind and a few others, A God. And near the end, They both die an ignoble death, by Dutch's Hands

    Next do one on the six skeletons in prison garb, who are chained together, in Roanoke Ridge (and the seventh corpse with severed feet somewhat removed from them). I've be burning to learn more of what is their backstory for ages (a runaway chaing gang that much seems clear, but how did they end up dead, how did one guy cut of his feet to escape the shackles etc.).

    I think she’s referring to John having to have vengeance no matter what it will cost him…he could’ve chosen to take his family and go, but instead he thinks he must punish Micah. And it’s a cycle which ends as you start it.

    10:10 I always though that one referenced the seemingly never ending cycle of the gang moving from place to place, finding more trouble and moving again, until finally coming to a dead end. And the part on 11:09 representing the players who stopped following the story in chapter two to never having Arthur being infected and none of the characters dying, thus being them "living forever".

    If you delay the Thomas Downes mission too much, the game will literally send you to his home and force the mission to start. The only way to forestall this, I think, is to not have the initial conversation with Strauss where he assigns Arthur to go shake down the debtors.

    This game is truly a masterpiece that services the first so well. It’s kind of funny how loved Marston was, that we played as Jack afterwards and players were mad he died. Then we have to play as such a well written character as Arthur then he goes on then we have control of Marston again. The story is truly one of the best. It’s as much as Dutch’s story, Arthur and John’s as it is Jack’s. There’s still so much story left; what formed the Van Der Linde gang up to Blackwater, Jack possibly going on to WW1 and what he could do after returning, what Sadie and Charles lives could be. I’m always down for more from R* with Red Dead.

    What did we replace him with nothing is actually a nod to nietzsche‘s “God is dead” quote which Micha uses against reverend Swanson in camp. We replaced God with nothing as the West in being tamed and “civilisation” takes root and the land is being remade in the vision of developers. My thinking anyways.

  • @CasualVFlowerEnjoyer

    I think it's about Abigail returning to John. By returning to him she basically ruins both of their lives and their son's. After John dies, Abigail also dies an unexplained death, likely suicide because for all of John's faults, she loved him. If she never returned, John would have had nothing to protect, and Abigail and Jack would have had a much different life free from John's crimes.

    Something amazing about how constantly this game, that thematizes the passage of time and of times, engages with foreshadowing. Camp conversations, Blind Man Cassidy, and the Soothsayer, two characters you pay to provide you with live foreshadowing, while also gaining honor, because Rockstar wants us on the ideal narrative path of high honor.

    I saw the circle repeating over and over as how seeking revenge doesn't end - Arthur is a killer and so becomes hunted, but protects John. John is a killer, and so becomes hunted, but protects Jack. Jack becomes a killer when he shoots Agent Ross for his revenge (though we have yet to know who he protects - possibly Abigail as he only kills after her death). It's about redemption and revenge being cyclical and never breaking. You kill, and then you are killed, you seek revenge and then become the revenge. This also applies to Dutch and Colm, kill the brother, kill Anabelle, steal Colm's scores, kidnap and torture Arthur, kill Colm before his hanging (preventing escape, but also revenge on Colm), only to be killed yourself by Pinkertons.
