I thought of Dutch. Because in Red Dead 1 the final mission with Dutch is ‘And The Truth Shall Set You Free.’ It definitely hurts Arthur seeing Dutch lose his mind, and in Arthur’s final moments Dutch is there. And Dutch’s final monologue when he’s on the cliff with John is the same when him and Arthur is on a cliff during the mission ‘Favored Sons’ so it goes to show that Dutch was thinking of Arthur.

I re-started rdr 2 campaign just to get to the unshaken bit. When i found old man cassidy and gave him a dollar he said something like "The last time we spoke you didnt seem to hear me" (not the exact lines, but i recall them to be the same) I never heard these lines when i played through the campaign for the first time .

So playing as John Marston, I gave him a buck only for him to tell me "they're coming for me, and when they do, you'll have no choice." I can only assume he learnt his encounter with Edgar Ross, and the events of RDR1.

Arthur was already dying from TB and had nothing to lose. John had everything to live for but chose to die so his family could be safe.

@@Dagger_323 true very true, but there is just something sadder about Arthur's death then Johns. He had been through so much shit, and then to top it off the only world he knew was beginning to break. After he got TB he saw good in the world and decided he was gonna die for something, and that was something was for John. That being said yes his death is predictable, but that doesn't make it anyless sadder. Johns and Arthurs deaths are sad for different reasons and both still make me sad no matter how many times I see it. Arthur's death just makes me sadder though.

@@genericboi4595 For me Arthur's death is more depressing than sad. I only teared up when he rode back to the camp at the end and the flashbacks began to play along with "That's the Way It Is." I didn't actually cry when Arthur died. The context of Arthur's sacrifice and his circumstances were somehow less impactful for me than John's. John's death to me was far more touching and moving, however. John sacrificed more and better redeemed himself. John had the wider character/story arc and went from a selfish irresponsible man rejecting his family to a man who laid down his life to give them theirs. You're right both deaths are sad. John's hits much harder for me though.

@@matitigamez5285 Originally I thought the "star" was a concept, not a person. I figured the "star" was loyalty. His whole life, loyalty is what mattered to him and it's ultimately what got him killed. If he had been less loyal he would have killed Micah in chapter two by letting him hang.

The theory that I've always had is that he traded his sight to "see" the future, possibly a deal from the strange man, similar to the general store owner in armadillo. Though there is next to no evidence for this, it fits with what the strange man has done, mingling with specific characters to either point them down a certain path, or giving them a choice in their fate.

Okay, I can confirm myself that Cassidy can return from Death. I killed him as Arthur in Chapter 3 and in the Prologue as John I ran into him near Blackwater. Other than that, I did ask for a fortune, and when I did he told me about the Two Strangers seeking John. I was incredibly put off by that when I first heard it.

In my playthrough, in chapter 2, I came across him, and he told me: "Go fast, but not so fast"... After losing more than 3 horses due to cliffs, I finally understand...

Nice vid Ethan. Been interested to see this one, hope you had a good Christmas lad. One thing I noticed, was that 'to speak with a forked tongue' means that someone says one thing but means another. But someone 'with a forked tongue' (a famous charateristic of a snake) could refer to Micah as a snake (traitor, treacharous, deceitful person etc.) Very similar meanings but I think that reinforces the point Cassidy was making even further.

Max Youre right! It says your father(and Arthur’s father left or died when he was real young) and basically Dutch became his father. Arthur even tells Charles that Dutch has basically taught him everything he knows. And Micah is the one seducing Dutch, always being a kiss ass to Dutch and always trynna put ideas in his head. Also, Arthur’s always saying “Maybe there’s hope that Dutch would change and go back to being normal or the way he was before”.

Love these in depth looks at things I completely miss. Adds so much to the game. Love your work.

The replay ability of this game is amazing! I’m on my 2nd play through and seeing and doing so much that I either didn’t do the first time or don’t remember doing. The controls are wonky but this is one of the best games ever made from a story and world perspective.

The Strange Man is not death it’s God. If you look deeper in every encounter especially the second one he is the perfect representation of God since he leads John to places where help is needed and tries to convince him to do the right thing in order to redeem himself spiritually and morally. That’s exactly what the Bible states God wants for everyone; to turn to him and into his light and achieve redemption for their sins. Also in the first game there’s a reference to the Bible also when a guy tells you about how Armadillo seems to be cursed and how a strange man frequently appears in that area. This is a direct reference to Sodom and Gomorrah in the Bible since Armadillo is a town full of people that take part in unholy and unrighteous things; and God after seeing this in the Bible he punishes them by sending down a storm of fire, that storm would be the “curse” of Armadillo making the Strange Man God.

There could also be something more to him as the game prevents Arthur from running him down on any horse so some form of higher entity/power could be linked to him.

I think John knew as long as he was alive his family would be hunted, so he figured just go out like a gunslinger, and save Jack to be that inferior character we all hate playing except for a single duel, a true Marston legacy.

Why didn't he just throw a dynamite at them, it's something I'll never understand. My guess is that John realised that no matter how much he ran Away, his family would not stop being persecuted until he was dead. So he decided to go down fighting in order to give Abigail and John a chance to live a good life. Just like Arthur years before.

He could’ve but John knew at that point they never stop running, his wife and son would never have a proper life. So to give them that chance he gave himself up, that was Johns redemption. His redemption wasn’t hunting his former gangmates but his realisation he can’t outrun his past and he had to die to make sure his family can live peacefully

I do not believe a blind man would have much use for a painting of palm trees in his house...

One thing I found interesting is that a friend of mine found him near several different locations throughout the game, but I only ever found him just outside emerald ramch, standing in the same spot every single time. We did play differently though. Food for thought.

I always thought that the reason Blind Man Cassidy is actually blind may have something to do with his fortune telling ability. I mean, who needs the vision of eyes when you can see things far in front of you while others can not? Eyes can be deceiving. They are not always to be trusted.

I havent seen the blind man once after I beat the epilouge. and as I went to 100% the game I didnt see him at all. I think it's because I killed him as arthur

I think you mean Hodr. The blind God of darkness and winter from Norse folklore. Btw Odin actually hangs for nine days and nights to gain knowledge of the runes nine is one of the most sacred numbers in old Norse belief and is also the the number of world's belived to exist.

I ran into blind man Cassidy yesterday. He told Arthur to not let your past decide the fate of another's future. Haven't found what it means yet and this was the only encounter I came across so far since I haven't got that far into the game. This happened shortly after fighting tommy in valentine.

You're not gonna find out much more about the "strange man" it's a prequel and John was still asking him who he was in rdr1. So I'm sure Rockstar has something planned for the next red dead redemption. They're setting up for a more mind blowing game. 😉
