All Roads Lead To Rome part 2 of 2

Irish International Trucking 70s style.
This is a very rare film following a driver in his Mercedes LP with a refrigerated trailer going from Wexford Ireland to Rome around 1974. The truck driven is like the photo on display, but this truck does not appear in the film. This film is in black and white and quality is good.
The trip follows the driver through London and on the old road via Canterbury to Dover, no motorways in those days, and onto Rome. Things haven't changed much with the job, just the roads and the trucks....the drivers still say the same things about the job!! A nice film to watch for the nostalgia.

Wonderful documentary from a time, within living memory. The roads and trucks may have changed beyond comprehension...... but the petty, silly, political things on a continental trip have got worse.

Films like this and the fact that my father was a driver through the 60s, 70s n 80s made my mind up that this was the life for me. No matter what the hardships or sacrifices were. 1989, started international, 23 yrs old with a Volvo F16 470 globetrotter, doing all over Europe. Absolute heaven! Again no matter what the bs or hardships. Like the guy says in the film, there were no lazy drivers back then. Day, night, day, all part of the job. It’s a way of life that few folk want these days, trucks have got easier and more comfortable, hours more controlled yet the job seems far harder now. Too many rules, too many euro states wanting their “cut” of the rates in fines n taxes. Still, wouldn’t want to do anything else thought. It’s a way of life, a vocation. Big ups to all who still enjoy it 👍

Really good film. Great writing and I loved the soundtrack. Maybe I'm dreaming but it seem like a great job for a summer or two.

Some things never change, the white haired guy says, " This truck weighs 40 tons! " When the legal gross weight was 32 tons at the time. Then he's wondering why the underpowered merc is struggling uphill. Very entertaining, must eat my steak and chips now.

Driving trucks (or horse and buggy) to deliver supplies which support our civilization has always been a job with many sacrifices. This video from the 1970's demonstrates that. Also, the men and women who do this job were professional and competent. While compensation to the driver isn't mentioned, AFAIK a person could support a family with the wages paid back then. This is not the case in 2018. I think that now, with the corporation of everything, the goal is to deliver goods at the lowest possible cost with cost cutting starting with the driver. There are people behind the wheel of big trucks that have little to no experience and are a grave danger to the motoring public simply because the wages are low. Driving trucks is a skill and takes practice to do it well.

Joe Mengler 15years I’ve been driving, I still consider myself inexperienced and have plenty to learn but I agree, one thing I’ve noticed is the sheer lack of forward thinking with some new drivers, they get what we’ve termed the “hardon factor” and think they know what they’re talking about when time and time again inexperience bites them in the arse. I think I’ll probably die doing this job because it’s all I know but I love the freedom of the road and I think I’ve got a bit of gypsy blood in me too which is why I like to wander about 🤣

Stoney gets £70 a week it said, for sure there where ways to make a little extra back then too though, I reckon a regular 3 bed house in Ireland back then was £1400-£2000

A brilliant film thank you for downloading it. That 70.00 in 1972 is equivalent to 790 per week now so quite well paid ???? I live in Ukraine it reminds me of Europe in the 70’s but even there times are changing fast

OMG. I drove for 30 years for a living, not tricks, and you lot make it sound so terrible. I bet a load of you actually made good money and had a great time. Of course you did nothing wrong it was always the other drivers and government agencies. Bit besides all that I enjoyed these two videos.
