You both missed the film completely It has TWO things that have never been done in a war film before, and that makes it absolutely unforgettable, unique and a film of an auteur: 1. How they showed us in details that they have been collecting and reusing the uniforms and boots from the dead soldiers and after that they presented them as brand new ones to the ingenuous teens who don't know what is waiting them. Those 10 minutes were just absolutely perfect, crushingly painful and diabolically hypocritical. Around that time you also get to know Paul, his hesitations and his hopes. 2. How Nature was a part of the film, the only beautiful element of it, how the beetle (which Kat kept) and the forest (+ the family of foxes) represented an objetive truth - even when terrible things happen in the world, the beauty of nature remains almost unaffected, and maybe even constant/unchanging. Also, the characters of Kat and Paul are brilliantly written and acted. Both actors - Albrecht Schuch and Felix Kammerer - were outstanding. And the complexity and the importance of the characters of Paul and Kat in the screenplay + the negotiation plot + the pure evilness from the general and the nepotism of its subordinate made the movie much more profound and different than 1917. Also, it is NOT a faithful adaption fo the iconic book, all the opposite, it is a terrible one, it is almost an original story.

If a lot of the ideas seem familiar it's because this is one of the first great anti-war stories. It was written by a WWI veteran.

the whole meaning is that despite so many years of battle and millions of dead people, nothing was actually achieved. There is no value in war, you don't get to know anything about him because he is the definition of an unknown soldier. Yes, he must had a life and yes, it is lost and forgotten.

this! the fact that the kid in the end doesn't collect paul's dog tag even enhances the idea of an unknown soldier. paul's family back home will never really know what happened to their son.

This book was required reading in my elementary school back in Europe where I grew up. It tore me up and changed me forever. Members of my families participated on both sides of WW I and WW II. Many never came home, some were wounded, physically and mentally. None wanted to talk about the horrors they took part in, or saw. Instead, they turned to alcohol and violence. I never knew my real father, or my real uncles...My mother never knew her husband...But, deep down, I am sure they were great human beings that were forced into a situation they were not ready for. War is hell. There are no winners, only the losers. And humanity never learns from previous mistakes. Old men keep sending young men to fight their wars, to this day...

This comment describes some of the horrors that the ones that get to come back home from war have to face all over the world. As you perfectly wrote: WAR IS HELL. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

@@johns123 that is a toss up. Either 3 options. It gets a singular screenplay nom over a BP nominee, it doesn't get in at all, or it gets in with a bunch of nominations. I still change my mind on that film daily.

This film was incredible, seriously good. A truly visceral experience, everyone should see this film. Sorry guys I don’t think you got it.

The war is the main character. Paul is the vessel through whom we see the horror of war.

ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT should get nominated for Best Picture, Director, Cinematography, Editing, Original Score, Production Design, Makeup & Hairstyling, Costume Design, and Sound. The film should win best picture because it should be watched by many people who craves war who thinks war is fun and for heroes

Normally it is hard for a remake to win an academy award, let alone that in fact the original movie is successful in the Academy. The same reason why the 2021 remake of West Side Story only gets best sopporting actress. The best category for this film is in the international category.

Normally the films that win the Oscar for best sound are music films, war films and, to a lesser extent, science fiction/adventure films.

One would think that with Russia's invasion of Ukraine, this definitly has the narrative to be a major Oscar contender. Time will tell how ready people are for this. Movies can be both an escape from reality as well as talk about the current issues. I think the Oscars this year might quite heavily sway in one direction. If movies like Top Gun, Everything Everywhere, Black Panther & Avatar make Best Picture, it's probably a sign that "Im Westen Nichts Neues" didn't make it.

When you mentioned it not being a feel good movie with no bouts of heroism, it's because it's not ment to be, it's not supposed to glorify the action the books and film adaptations are anti war that is the message, its supposed to make you feel dread and discomfort, but overall good review guys this movie does need to seen.

In the original movie, Paul got some time back home where he openly criticized the war to civilians and I wish they would’ve done that in this version. Him being a changed, seasoned soldier and realizing that everything is bullshit when he was back in Germany was powerful.

the thing is, that in the novel and in the 1930 movie the story kind of _needed_ this part, since back then they didn't know what was about to come next. we're nowadays in a completely different spot, since we _do_ know about WW2. so, a modern version has to tell the story in a slightly different manner - hence the hints towards WW2 (like the negotiations in compiegne). instead of paul going home and returning later, we all know what that young nameless boy in the end will do: he will go home and later become a soldier in WW2.

I loved it. And, it got shortlisted for a couple of possible Oscar nominations!! 8.5/10

I completely disagree that it doesn't do anything novel. That last scene where Paul dies and you just get the shot of that kid looking at him with slight recognition and pausing for a second before moving on to the next dead soldier is everything. We spend the whole movie with Paul seeing his story and ultimately all that comes of everything he went through (and that so many others went through) is a name plate thrown into a baggie.

It's in the DNA of the story that it is NOT heroic in the slightest, so I really appreciated that the movie adapted this anti-war sentiment from the book. Remarque, who has fought in the war himself, wrote that this is not an adventure "because death is not an adventure to those who stand face to face with it". I think it's a very German (European?) thing to portray war and militarism not in a way that is glorifying. After all, there is no general excitememt about the military and war in Germany, as there is in the US. So maybe American audiences perceive this film as somewhat "boring", as there is no hero to save the day by killing a bunch of enemies, I don't know. I hope they make more war films like that, though. For war has been a reality ever since, it is a reality now - and it never is glorious, for nobody.

oscar retrospective 1930!

Looking forward to this. I read the book and then watched 1917 and found it to be a let down. It didn’t capturing the horror rather than the heroics of this event

Ugh this was even more of a let down. There's a reason the first fool film was over 2 hours long.

Audience score is the most unreliable thing ever I can give a movie a 10 or ZERO without even seeing the movie lol

Great review, but the only thing I will criticize you guys on is your comment about it not being a"feel good movie with no heroism portrayals." War is not supposed to be feel good. Yes, there is plenty of heroism that has occurred throughout history's conflicts, but this movie is an ANTI-WAR film. It is meant to portray the ugly reality of combat and how it affects the youthful souls that are unfortunately thrown into it. You guys even mentioned "Come and See" in great regards, and as you know, that film is nothing short of terrifying, tragic, and depressing, just as war itself truly is.

I predict a lot of surprise nominations for this film including director and picture

Just came back from this one, not gonna lie, 1917 and Dunkirk are like a walk in the park compared to this film.

In 1917, after they passed the trenches, the movie turned into a joke. The scenes are so unbelievable in a bad sense. German fighter plane get's shot down and lands conveniently at the same barn the main character where standing. Then they rescue the pilot an he stabs one of the guys with a knife rather thanking them(these pilots respected chivalry and understood themselves as knights in the sky). Also the scene with the river crossing or when he escaped the german in that burning village.

There's not an ounce of feel good and it's relentless? Like... war? The trailer looked amazing, and although it streaming on Netflix means lots of eyeballs, it seems like not seeing it in the theatre could hurt it's tech noms

It will be nominated for best picture. There is just not enough quality out there for the Oscars this year and so it will find its way . And that is well deserved as it is a very good film.

The battle scene in the 1930s version takes some beating. It will be interesting to see how this movie recreates it.

I disagree with the heroism. The protagonist is very much a hero. He pulls through several times despite being physically not super strong. And he shows that he has a conscience. It’s the sacrifices that he makes that make him a hero. It’s not obvious because it is not an American film (thank god).

I think the most beautiful thing about this is the fact that it never actually came down to I would say who’s winning losing, but I think with the author of the book who was a soldier On the western front at the start of the world war who got pulled into the draft and I’m pretty sure he was American and he had been at the end of the war I think on the western front as the cease-fire was called. After the war he started writing the Venap of this movie novel which was based on his experience and I would say hundreds if not 200 or more American and German soldiers as well as some French I believe and British who were intertwined with the war and gave their view on combat which made up The beginning of them turning it into a movie and a bad time in the states and in Germany especially, It was a very very out of the lines to have gore and death Shannon films so this was a very big boost into at the cinema sins started getting with higher rating movies. Please correct me if I’m wrong anyone, if anyone was actually interested in reading this, lmk if I got any of the facts wrong

There was more about what Paul wanted after the war, his mom and daughter, in the original from 1930. That’s one thing the original did better.

Bold prediction, but this movie will lock itself into Best Picture and fighting Top Gun for the technicals. Netflix should push this as the big player because I've already seen critics and others lukewarm on Glass Onion.

The book is not 100 years old (practically). These two (narrators) are able to review movies less skillfully than they are to end every statement they make with a question mark. “Like, right?” A war movie is about men and for men. Reviews done by boys are not helpful.

comparing to the one from 1930 this one was shit. by itself it was ok. 6/10

The scope presented is too broad, while the perspective that is trying to be used is too intimate. So that these two things become antitheses which in the end are equally ineffective It became numbing so quickly

Overview It’s a good looking movie with threatening sound, good actors and harsh imagery. It has a strong message against wars and it is suited for the new generation, but not particularly well designed for dedicated lovers of the book and/or lovers of the older adaptations and for historians to endure only with some pain. Long version The new movie is the 3rd best novel adaptation of „Im Westen nichts Neues“. I watched it in German. Though I‘m from Germany, it would have been better with German subtitles, because some of the actors were mumbling. This was surprisingly without consequences, because the movie is relying heavily on it’s aesthetically pleasing pictures, it’s threatening score and the good performance of it‘s actors. The movie has not much in common with the famous book and it’s older adaptations from 1930 and 1979, which were both very faithful to the book. The script is mediocre (the plot lacks cohesion) and the historical accuracy is going overboard in some scenes (the war enthusiasm from 1914 placed in 1917; a german offensive in the last minutes of the war, when in reality only the Entente and the USA were doing this kind of deadly nonsense in 1918). A movie for the new generation and not for lovers of the book and/or lovers of the older adaptations. For historians to endure only with pain. (I recommend highly this insightful book: Joseph E. Persico: Eleventh Month, Eleventh Day, Eleventh Hour: Armistice Day, 1918 World War I and Its Violent Climax.)

I caught up with All Quiet last night and I was a bit disappointed. Yes this has really strong technical production qualities, but the story and characters were below average. You hit the same thoughts in your review that I had. The cinematography is definitely among the best of the year. And the score was quite interesting. Overall I give the film 6 out of 10 stars. 1917 is a much stronger film from this time period and setting.

This film is very relevant during the time of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Also, I find it very disappointing of these two not to have bothered to read the great Remarque novel before reviewing the film. It's an adaptation as well as an homage to the book, so it's kind of important.

Gut wrenching film…..Is it a true story in anyway..

I stayed up all night for this. It premiered at 3am EST, I started it at 3:05am. I liked it better than the 1930 original and way better than the 1979 made-for-tv version. Of all three this was the least faithful to book; however, the liberties taken were more than acceptable. The fact that this is in German with German speaking actors makes sense since it's about the German experience in WWI. I know some reviewers try to compare this to "1917" but they are completely different movies. I can understand the cinematography but that's about it. In "1917" the violence is not nearly as in-your-face and there's a certain bleakness in this film comparable to a Kubrick film that leaves you feeling defeated. Overall I absolutely loved this.

You guys are harsh on a movie that cost the lives of countless young men. Keep surfing..
