ALL OUT 800 meters vs. My High School Team!!

I started running track when I was a sophomore in high school (16yo). At that age I never thought I would one day become an Olympian! Fortunately, there were a few people at Bishop Kelly HS who believed in me. That's why I love to give back to the school whenever I'm home in Boise, Idaho. In this video I got a chance to race 800 meters against some of their fastest boys and girls!!
I LOVE GIVING PEOPLE SHOES!! That's why I give away a brand new pair of running shoes to one lucky follower every Tuesday. If you want a chance to win simply follow me on Instagram here: / nicksymmonds

Success breeds success in high school, once a school starts winning some meets it gets more kids to come out, it seems like the good teams are always good because it becomes a cool fun sport to do, while the bad teams stay bad because they just can’t get the numbers to come out. Have to start getting kids when they are young.

HONEST ENGINE I completely disagree. Your reply sounds ignorant, and here is why. 1.) You don’t need to look for problems for them to exist. I’m not looking for problems, sexism is real, it exists, I’ve experienced it on several occasions. I was only making a positive statement about Nick from what I’ve noticed throughout his videos. I’d like to reiterate I said “sometimes”. I never said it happens all the time. I can only presume you’re a male because if you are female you should understand. 2.) Racism is an ongoing issue, it’s not something you look for, it’s there. Racism is systematic too. Maybe research info on such issues to comprehend why what you said shouldn’t be said. Prejudice is a real thing and I can assure you I, and many other people don’t search for it. Also making this political is disgusting. The democrats and the republicans are POS. If those are the people you look up to I’m sorry for you. Please know that it’s okay to change your perspective. You don’t have to be close minded. :)

  • @kenzieb4907

HONEST ENGINE Wrong. I’m an extremely positive and joyful person. You’re delusional for blindly following a leader just because he fits your leftist views. I can see we as a society need to make progressive changes. That makes me open minded. Try expanding your surroundings and educate yourself. You will see the world doesn’t revolve around you and just because you don’t experience something doesn’t mean it isn’t an issue. Also you replied to my comment, don’t tell me to go away. Have a nice day :)

My best 800m, actually measured as a half mile, (age 39, second year of running) was 2:28, outdoor asphalt/concrete, mostly straight. I had to step down over one curb to the street in the final block and almost face planted, barely caught my weight, but I had no idea my knees could be that weak near the end. I never ran a 800m on the track except as a second or third race, so didn't break 2:30. I had enough experience to say 800m is the toughest distance since I hate running that hard and having nothing left at the end.

They are all overstriding as the camera catches them as they are slowing down post finish. However yes the amateur runners overstrode and most did a heel strike (classic sign of over stride) the whole race. They would be much benefited by some barefoot training!

Kind of crazy to watch this. I only ran the 800 in comp once... 2:10... I could have almost won that one as a teenager back in the day. The funny thing is I was a 400m runner and had no idea how to run the 800m. I told my coach at the region meet that I wanted to try the 800m. He looked at me and said "But you don't have a qualifiying time....ah well you can probably run 2:25" He wrote 2:25 as my qualifying time..which put me in the "slow heat". The gun went off and having run open 400m and 400m X 4 relays all the time I went out like a bit of a rocket. I had now idea how fast or slow I was as I was trying to slow down to give myself a little energy. Turns out I built a 50m lead on the rest of the field. The crowd was going nuts... But I had gone out way fast. 58.5 first lap... took me over 1:12 for the second lap. I actually had the lead through 740 meters or slow. But over the last 60m two guys from the pack (One of them my teamate) chased me down and passed me for sub 2:10 times! I actually think the fastest guy from my slow heat qualified for the State meet of of his time. If I only had learned how to run a pair of 61s before that day I was capable of much faster. Just didn't know how to slow myself down. That was my Junior year... I never went back to train for the 800m again. I should've though. With the right training I would had potential to go sub 2:00. Good times. 400m and 800m are beasts but so FUN!

OMG!!! Looking at that those current records for your school I noticed your school record was 49.39 for the 400m. I would’ve beaten that record if I went to your school. My school didn’t keep our track records but I ran 49.34 my senior year at my class championships. I feel really validated as a former sprinter seeing that especially since I’m getting older.
