All My Ants Update! +Exotic Ants Unboxing

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

In this video we will go through ALL of my current ant colonies, and see how they are doing. We will go through all my native swedish ants, as well as my exotic messor queens. 😄 We will unbox the newest members to the collection, my new Polyrachis Rastellata colonie, from thailand.
⭕DISCLAIMER: I don't want anyone thinking I am all for the importation of exotic ants, but I am not all against it either. If you do your research, have the equepment/enviromental conditions and ofcource have the escape preventing safety you need for the ants, I think it is okey to import ants and keep them as pets. 👍However, keeping native colonies is much easier, more fun, and much less dangerous for your local eco-system, be responsable, and only buy from sustainable sellers who raise colonies from single queens.⭕

    Queens can take weeks to months to move locations. I suggest putting a cover on the new fresh test tube and a light that isnt too bright or too hot over the bad test tube. This would help speed up the process of moving queens

I haven't seen your recent videos, so I guess I'll have to update myself to figure out your approach to ant keeping. As you mentioned, do your research and keep ants! :)

    Did you notice how you found a queen in winter? It was in your house. Exotic ants can do that too. They can escape and travel around your area. But even if they die, they can carry disease or parasites, which can be detrimental to the wildlife. Also, prenolepis imparis doesn’t hibernate over winter, and are in your area.

    The queen might not actually be dead. Some queens go to a near death state and stay still after their nanitics. If you gave the nanitic honey and the worker gave food to the queen via trophalaxis, the Queeb might quote on quote "come alive"

    Hi mate, great video. Do you feed your queens well before hibernating? Even if they are claustral, in extreme cold temperatures they might need that extra boost of some honey to keep them warm and fight off infection and fungus. As for the exotic ants, I believe responsible keeping of exotic ants by an adult is no problem if it is within the keeper's means to keep them contained. When you live in such cold temperatures it definitely can't be a problem if it is so different from their natural habitat, like you said they will die quickly in the cold. So don't worry about any hate you get for it :P

    Some queens of Messor Barbarus don't stack all the eggs leaving some laying on the floor, it's normal. I think that it could be because Messor Barbarus are one of the ants with less vision and they don't realise that one egg is not stacked.

    I had a lot of luck this year: none of my lasius ants/queens died! Sadly, some Messor barbarus workers did die. The overlapping gaster-segments are caused by low food reserves, I think. If you feed them, they will be okay again. What a great way to capture a (Myrmica) queen! I hope your Polyrhachis will do well!

    I mean, I have a heat coil in the cubboard where I keep all of my founding colonies, so it is like 26*c in there, and I put em there after hibernation :)

    Hey ants Scandinavia, I have caught a Carpenter ant in savannah Georgia but I’m not entirely sure if she is fertilized. I saw her flying in my room with both her wings however her gaster is massive. Idk what to do.

  • @AntsScandinavia

    @AntsScandinavia

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hmmm, most likely if she was "flying" she is not fertile, however I can be wrong! There is only one way to know for sure and that is to put her in a test tube. Campos can take a while to lay any eggs, so if she is fertile she lives, if not she will probably die :/ But I would try :)

    did you put the myrmica queen in hibernation? i have a manica queen, which has eggs, but no workers. i dont want to lose her ;(( maybe she die in hibernation and dont get it... i love this species and also this queen, because it was a very lucky catch ^^

  • @AntsScandinavia

    @AntsScandinavia

    5 жыл бұрын

    Wooow, Manica!! Awesome bro! I would wait untill she has her first workers, as the eggs and larvae will die in hibernation most likely. Or, you can put her into halfhibernation (maybie 16*C) when she has them to larvae, that way she feels that the temperature is dropping and will maybie not lay more eggs. If she has a worker to start with in spring, she will lay muuuch more eggs then, so wait rather for her to get one at least! :)
