Ashton was a mill town, my gran worked in the cotton mills dotted around Ashton.I went back there last year after my mum died.It was so different and scary.I grew up there and my parents did, they never moved away. Bless them they only knew this town where my mum was mugged and dragged along a pavement, but she held on to her handbag!

I visited Ashton recently, having moved away years ago. I was disappointed to see the decline in the town. It was a Tuesday so the "flea market" was on.... eeewww. The Market avenue was a hotch potch of charity shops and not very clean looking businesses. I was surprised to see a metal sculpture of a miner,on the ground, modeled from the waist up!! Weird! Plus,it was raining! I didn't buy anything and came away feeling sad for what was once the town i lived in.

Great video of how it used to look but that's when the decline started around 2010 era but now it's finished down there sadly as all the shops I used to go in are gone and I was down there on 5th December 2021 and couldn't even get a decent pair of shoes anywhere it's not the same now! It's just somewhere for drunks to congregate and I used to stand the market on Sundays carboot/table top sale and the townhall demolition killed the outdoor market off as the whole town center was one huge building site, so all the trade went elsewhere and never came back sadly as ashton and Oldham was 2 of the biggest and busiest markets within Lancashire once upon a time!!! The councilors who ruined the town center of ashton should be ashamed of themselves as I wouldn't be able to show my face in public again after what then cochroaches have done to a once thriving busy market! R.i.p ashton 😎

Ashton is certainly not the town it use to be, but if you were brought up here, this is the place that made you what you are, a lot of us are proud that we were brought up in what use to be a good Market Town.

Ashton is a grotty town which is stuck in a time warp. Always has been and always will be.

If we get into our cars and shop out of town, what is to be expected. Stop using out of town shops & walk into Ashton use what shops/market stalls we have left. Stop moaning and make it a thriving town again. If you don't use it you lose it!
