ABOUT VEDANTA
Vedanta is one of the world’s most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions.
ABOUT US
Vedanta Society of New York is affiliated with the Ramakrishna Order of India. In fact, this is the Order's first Center started by Swami Vivekananda, in 1894. It was a historic event, for the seed of the world-wide Ramakrishna Movement was sown here in New York over a century ago. Swami Sarvapriyananda is the present Resident Minister and Spiritual Leader of the Vedanta Society of New York.

    The world is analagous to a certain cube. This particular cube appears to be self subsistent, but, in reality, it is simply a small part of a hypercube. Likewise the seemingly self subsistent world is objectively part of a greater hyper reality and this state of affairs is given some expression in the myths and philosophy. Indeed of all philosophies advaita vedanta seems to be the clearest about this and goes deeper than even our mathematico-physical models today can go. It is stranger still.

Sanatana Dharma followers are free to be from any part of the world - some of the best ones were not even born Hindu - eg, the great Sister Nivedita ! Vedanta is no place for such narrow-minded bigotry ! Also just FYI - Jesus is recognized as an avatar in the path of Vedanta as propounded by Swami Vivekananda.

    What's the meaning of Gita ch.13 verse 30, where Krishna says Brahman is not the doer and that its prakriti who acts ... If according to Advaita, everything is Brahman (sarvam khalvidam brahman) then isn't Brahman the doer?

  • @shreya2262

    @shreya2262

    A slight correction instead of "everything is Brahman", it's actually "everything else except Brahman is mithya" mithya as in dependent (on Brahman). In Absolute sense, there is no doer, no work, no birth, no death, etc. Since, we live in a relative world, we are trying to understand the absolute truth with tools appropriate in relative world (like understanding the nondual truth (ie) Brahman using Saguna Brahman like Krishna, Shiva, etc)
