Thanks so much for your honesty. I got my nose pierced but couldn’t handle the bump that formed. It was so annoying...took the piercing off. I thought recently about getting a piercing again, but watching this video really reminded about how much work it is to keep it clean. Won’t be doing it again.

I have had a lot of issues with my piercing and I read on reddit that one of the best things to do is to just leave it alone. Don't touch it, don't play with it, try not to snag it on something. I switched from a bone stud to a ring and there was a bump but it had gone down.

I had the same issue too no solutions provided online and youtube helped!!! What i did was get a sterile needle popped the bump and there was bleeding but its all worth it. I then cleaned the bump with soap and then added hydrogen peroxide and pressed down with a q-tip for a couple of minutes then it went down. I also added some vicks vapor rub on it so the redness would go away and it worked!!!

I have a few piercings myself along with stretched ears... you really gotta be patient when it comes to any new piercings. I too had the bump ~3months after I gotten my nose pierced cuz I changed it from a stud to a hoop... I tried many home remedies as well but in the end, I just held it together & waited it out. Any piercing I got after that (a couple cartilage piercings & a daith) I waited it out & did the usual salt water soaks & salt water sprays to keep them clean. Also avoid touching them constantly as they heal cuz that also irritates it.

I feel for you in this video, Anne! I've had my nose piercing (stud still) for about a year and a half now and I'm still doing sea salt soaks (10 minutes every morning and night) PLUS heat compressions (10 minutes every morning and night). Heat compressions by putting a clean shirt over a heating pad and pressing that against my nose. Though, it is A TON of nose maintenance and hoops are just so darn cute! So I can understand the eagerness to switch from a stud to a hoop but I defineitly think that it's better to wait it out than trying to rush the healing process. Sorry you had to go through all that trouble! You look beautiful either way :)

Omgosh... even after a year later? Is that recommended? How does one know if a nose piercing has fully healed? Are you planning on switching to a hoop or just keeping your stud?

  • @katmanual

    @katmanual

Knock on wood, I haven't had any sudden nose bump "granuloma" break outs recently but I think that's due to my repetitive and very time consuming nose maintenance! It is true that you just have to understand how your body works and with this in mind, I felt comfortable to slowly start giving my nose a break and not doing any maintenance in the weekends as well not doing sea salt soaks every morning now! Another thing to keep in mind for future thought is that it is possible that your body could be prone to keloids. Like you, I am also Filipino and I did some culture research on this and read that people that have darker skin tones are more at risk of keloids...which sucks :( Overall, I found your video very informative and similar to my own piercing problems! I took a risk in getting my nose piercing after having to deal with my cartilage piercing and having to get keloid surgery removal for that as well! So it is kinda scary wanting to get more piercings knowing that you have a high chance of having a keloid.

Just realized I didn't answer your questions! My piercer who I trust immensely - due to my friends having great outcomes, recommended the sea salt and heat compression! I'm not completely sure how you can tell if a nose piercing is fully healed, unfortunately. I'm guessing that you can start to realize when you see your skin "healed" like how it looks like on your regular ear piercing! I'm definitely planning to switch to a hoop but maybe later on this year when the weather isn't so blazing hot here in Austin, TX - since I heard that your skin heals better in the cold!

I had a bump on my nose piercing for 9 months straight just with a stud, I went to another piercing shop, they looked at it and told me that I was not pierced at the right angle (with a curved angle instead of a perpendicular one)... so it was very hard to heal! The piercer suggested I should take it off, so I got my nose repierced like 1 mm next to it. I had my new nose piercing for like 3 weeks and the healing is going much better. Maybe it's not your case but still I hope this could help you!

I have a bump now and I have followed some tips I got off KZread I did the sea salt soak, and the tea tree oil. I even did the sea salt paste. But what I found to work for me (which is what my piecer told me to do) 1st I switched to titanium studs ( I have a mild allergy to nickel). 2nd she told me to keep doing the sea salt soaks I did that for bothering say just to make sure I didn't get a keloid on the other side. 3rd she said I'd it didn't go away after 3 days to poke it and put tea tree oil on it (Yes I know poking or popping it may not be a good idea but it helped). I did notice a big difference after like 5 days it's way smaller I still do the salt paste just to have tea tree oil on my nose at night but that's completely optional on my part. I also use Neosporin but only in the morning morning and I clean my piercing with some warm salt water and tea tree oil. The Neosporin is just to help the skin I didn't want a dark spot so I used the ointment to help with that. Helpful tips: Don't play with your piercing that could also cause a keloid. And always wash your hands before touching it.

I think the best and safest say to go are the sea salt soaks to get rid of the bump

I feel your struggle girl T-T I pretty much have a double helix piercing (got them in 2016). I got them done 3 months apart. The second one, I decided to get a hoop instead of a stud (what I got for the first piercing). And because the hoop one got infected it pretty much infected my first piercing which was healing so nicely prior to that. And dude, they both have JUST started to heal and the bumps are gone now (fingers crossed they don't come back). Just reoccurring tenderness and slight swelling here and there. I did all those home remedies that you did too...just have to really be patient...it sucks T-T I now know to just stick with a stud until the piercing fully heals.

Is it also recommended to get a stud first when you get a one/double helix piercing? I wanna get one at some point, but I also don’t wanna get a bump. I feel like that part of the ear is also sensitive especially when you’re sleeping. How long did you have the bumps and how did you clean them as they healed?

  • @jessinwanderland

Sorry in advance for this long ass post I'm making you read haha My piercer told me it heals better with a stud. (I just didn't do it the second time coz...yolo. I regret it now lol) For the stud he recommended the round back instead of the flat b/c I mentioned I'm a side sleeper and wear glasses. The aftercare instructions were 1) when showering, you can run warm-hot water on it to kinda flush out the wound and 2) Saline Wound Wash/Solution 2x a day. You can get it at Walgreens, CVS, etc. Just check the ingredients and make sure that it's just water and sodium chloride, nothing else. And those two steps were working perfectly. It was my fault that my piercings got so bad b/c in summer 2016, I went to Malaysia for a month and didn't bring my wound wash and they got swollen. In early 2017, that's when it got worse and the bumps formed and I tried all the home remedies that did nothing. I read that bumps need to drain as much as possible since not much circulation gets to the cartilage. So here and there I used a hot compress to try and soften the gunk + the aftercare instructions. FYI spraying that saline wash directly gets everywhere , so I just drop enough to saturate a Q-tip and gently clean the front and back of my ear. And after almost a year, the bumps are gone and I only do those two steps to clean. It's just a lot of patience >. As for sleeping, I think both are equally comfortable. Just gotta wait til the tenderness goes down to sleep on them. Good luck girl! I hope your piercing heals fast with no more bumps!

Girl, i feel you on those bumps! But nose piercings or any cartilage piercings don’t fully heal until about a year. I think changing it out to a hoop too early on might have aggravated it. I’ve had my nostril piercing for 3 years now and just stuck with a stud and had no problems. But! My daith in my ear was a biatch. I got a bump because i kept fiddling with it and i just left it alone completely and eventually in a month it fell off. Be patient with them!

Sigh the struggle is real. Nose piercings should come with a warning they pierce a hole on you hahaha. I asked the piercer when it was ok to switch from a stud to a hoop and told me 3 months 😭. I’ll just have to be extra careful now with my hoop for the next 7 months. I do still want to get my ear lobes pierced though 🤔.

If this didn’t work for you, listen to this: About six months ago I got my helix pierced (with a needle), everything was fine and smooth sailing un until I noticed a bump like a bubble that was growing (not a keloid). After 2 months of testing out different methods and at home treatments like tee tree oil or aspirin nothing worked and sometimes I found that it became worse. I felt very frustrated and def regretted getting it BUT I asked my mum for some help and we made the decision to visit our local doctor, after some talking he gave us this treatment cream called bactroban cream which kills all the bad bacteria, you use this cream twice a day and your bump should go away after a week. After using this cream it didn’t work, I felt tempted to pop or take out the earring which are all BAD choices. my mum mentioned to me that when I was younger I had gotten an infection from an earring on my lobe because of the surgical steel earring SO I decided to change the earring to a titanium but nothing changed since the stud was still irritating my skin. After a week I changed my earring to a GOLD hoop and applied the cream as the instructions said and now I have no bump nor pain and it looks great!

When I got mine pierced (about 2 & a half years ago) I didn’t rush into changing it to a hoop cuz I know there’s that risk of getting that bump so I stuck with the stud for atleast a year and changed it to a hoop, but I went back with the stud cuz I find it more comfortable ((:

Stud is def more comfortable, but the hoop is so darn cute 😭. I just have to be extra aware now and careful with the hoop. And omgg, I’m so sad for your friend for having to take off the piercing completely. The dermatologist actually recommended that I take the hoop off, but I told her I wanted to keep my piercing 😆. She really did a good job taking the bump off with the hoop on.

I have had bump for a year I have also just recently removed my piercing two days ago. It got infected when I first got it pierced and then it had fell out so I had to get it pierced again and it was fine. But it also had gotten infected yet again. I think it was because I had gotten it pierced on the same side. so yeah I couldn’t deal with it anymore. Also you are absolutely right you do have to maintain it and clean it as much as possible but h20 spray I had used made the bump worse because I was allergic to it apparently but nope, no more nose piercings for me.

Please help me! I currently have a bump on my piercing, which is like one and a half months old. I got it pierced with a ring and not a stud but I don’t want to change it now and risk infection. I got a saline solution off of Amazon and after using that for a week-ish and it went down but then came back a couple of days later. The bump has been there for probably about a month now and I’m so sick of it, it makes me really insecure. Any advice would be much appreciated!

I went to a ghetto shop and mentioned I wanted a hoop but understood I had to have a stud first then after it healed (typically 6 months/after ur piercing stops secreting puss/crusties, there’s no pain/sensitivity), but the piercer insisted we could start with a hoop- no problem. She recommended I use hydrogen peroxide to clean but the internet advised against that so I used something else (forgot what it’s called but it’s an antibacterial spray). Lo and behold, a couple months later I did get a bump. Not sure if it was cuz of the ring or cuz I caught a cold and had a runny nose for 2 days (still cleaned piercing throughout), but I went to a diff shop and they said you should NEVER start off with a hoop bcuz it’s curved and will make pull on your skin and either cause a bump or just heal at a curved angle (can bo longer use studs down the line). Changed my hoop to a stud, started cleaning with a salt spray they recommended (arm&hammer), and in 2-3 weeks the bump went away!

USE SEA SALT AND WATER GUYS!! i had a nose piercing bump for about a month and i was so frustrated, i thought it would go away on its own but i could swear it was only getting bigger. so i searched online and apparently using a sea salt solution would help, and that’s what i did. i mixed about a teaspoon of sea salt into a small jar of water, soaked it in a cotton ball, and pressed it against my bump for about 20 minutes. after, i dried it with a q-tip. what i did next is something i don’t really recommend but it worked for me. while i was drying the bump, i pushed it around and realised it was kind of peeling away. i pushed it even harder and it looked like there was a GIANT white head hiding underneath, so i pushed EVEN HARDER and thought trying to get the white head out would be a good idea (spoiler: it kind of wasn’t). my bump started bleeding really badly and i thought: ‘that’s it. tomorrow morning i will wake up with a giant wart on my nose’. i tried to stop the blood the best i could and then went to sleep with the lowest hopes of what i would find on my face the following morning. the next day, my bump wasn’t as drastic as i thought it would be, the blood just clotted. i decided i bothered my bump enough and didn’t apply any more sea salt solution and just left it alone, save for some quick q-tip cleaning i did to keep the area clean. by the end of the day, however, IT WAS HEALED??? there was still a tiny blemish left, but that healed quickly too and my nose piercing is now completely bumpless. SOOOOO i definitely recommend using a sea salt solution. soak a cotton ball in the sea salt solution and press it to your nose piercing bump for 20 minutes, but don’t bother it any further. keep doing that about 2 times a day and i think you’ll see good results. DISCLAIMER: i’m not a skin specialist yall, i have zero knowledge on this subject except for my own experience and what i learned from a mistake i made. GOOD LUCK!!

I had been cleaning it since I've gotten the piercing so I was shocked to get it. But I popped the bump squeeze everything out with a swab and cleaned it with dial soap and alcohol 10 times a day or so. In between I would do the salt bath then alcohol. It went away in a day I pray it doesn't come back I have a stud since the piercing and think that why I have this issue waiting for 6 months to change it to a hoop.

In my experience, I've had my nose piercing now for about 8 months now, I went through the exact same situation. My piercing grew a bump about 3 months in, I googled solutions, none worked, and in defeat I went to my piercer. Turns out that nose piercings should have at least 6 months to heal before switching to a hoop, and that the sea salt soaks etc. rarely ever work. Piercer told me to not use hydrogen peroxide, sea salt, etc. anything that had harsh chemicals in it and to just use soap and water.

Ugh I have the worst bump right now! Worse than yours was. I was 4 weeks post-piercing, following my after care and everything was healing well when I got a head cold. I was congested and blowing my nose for several days and then the bump appeared and it's just gross looking. I have had work events weekly for a month and tomorrow I have a black tie awards banquet and I'm just trying to cover it with makeup as best I can. Yes, I know that can make it worse, but I can't be greeting our 800+ guests with this big red bump on my face. 😭 It makes me feel so insecure but I'm hoping other people don't notice it like I do. My fiance doesn't notice anything but we live together and he didn't know it was there until I pointed it out. 😂
