Indeed, we have these big boys and girls in and around the Seattle area. And every Autumn they scared the wits out of the unsuspecting locals when the males start to wander. My wife once observed a specimen she thought as big as a pony and ever after we've referred to them simply as ponies! An impressive spider and a fine video on your part. Thanks!

Years ago, you'd know I'd seen a giant house spider because suddenly a hole would open up in the plasterboard. Then I took the time to understand them, I learnt they are rather tidy house critters, they benefit your health by eating the bacteria carrying flies and other dirty bugs, and they genuinely try to stay out of your way. I understand they will also not fare well if released because they are used to being in the protection of a house or shed. So now days, I always keep one around the house somewhere. When I see one dart across the carpet I know he's just off to get his end wet. "Where do you think you're off to at this hour Mr?" This is all usual taking place as or after the Mrs has put a hole in the plasterboard.

I've got one living in my house. I happened to notice it drinking from some water that was spilled from my cats water bowl. I've since left a Pringles lid full of water out for it and it happily comes out most nights for a drink. I love spiders but I have to admit it can freak me out when it decides to do a dash across the floor ... especially as I tend to sit on floor cushions rather than the sofa. Despite this I'm rather happy to have this little lodger.

I live in Norway. Generally the spiders here do not get big. However there are some who are the exception to this rule. Just a month ago I was in my grandmothers home where we are cleaning things out to sell it since she cannot really maintain the house and it is much to big for her anyway. In the cellar there is one back storage room. As we opened this door there was the most massive spider I have ever seen of the native type. It hung on the door. It is tough to say the measurements, but it is safe to say this was the queen of all living things down there. Had no rivals and no contest for food. Probably lived like royalty down there. I would say it had a legspan of way larger than average.

This explains why what people in the US term as "big spiders" always seem small to me. These monsters were the stuff of my nightmares in the summer when we had to have the windows open for ventilation. I'd never go into the toilet without taking a good look at the ceiling and walls. Plus our attic, garage, and seldom used closets were full of them. And yes they were FAST. Too many times I'd be woken in the night by one of these running across my bed or pillow making at noise from its huge spider hob-nailed boots (or so it sounded to a scared 10 year old). We knew we had a big spider on our hands when a glass would not fit over it and even if it did you'd need to be very quick to avoid it scampering away to torment you from a spot a small kid could not reach.

Hello, Thank you for this video! Informative and helpful. I brought a ladder into my house yesterday to do some work. While moving it, I thought I saw somwting large and brown dangling, but dismissed it as debris. A bit later I noticed that one of my toes had a sharp (but mild) pain, a bit like a tiny shard of glass just at the front edge of the nail. I thought that was weird, but figured it would go away soon. I rubbed the toe to dislodge the splinter, if there was one, but over the time of my project it didn't change. I pulled off my sock (I was doing my project in socks only), and noted a red area about the size of medium pea. Then I noticed the giant spider perched on a low rung of the ladder! Wow, was it big, and ugly! (I'm not a spider hater, but this one I found hard to love, especially since I think it bit my toe.) It was surprisingly willing to stay in one place while I awkwardly maneuvered the ladder out the narrow glass doors to the garden. What a relief that it didn't jump off and run under a chair in my living room. Once a reassuring distance from the house, I took a photo and then jarred the ladder, at which point the spider jumped off and ran for cover. I am writing this about 8 hours later and I still have that tiny pain in my toe. It feels like a tiny paper cut or sharp splinter and is only obvious with any amount of pressure. I'm located in Northern California in the San Francisco Bay Area, which is not on your list of locations. I don't know for certain that this is a giant house spider, but it looks like the photos of the female. If it's not a giant house spider, what else could it be?

seen a few of these in my day, I wouldn't say I'm a complete arachnaphobe, but I think most of my uneasyness stems from my mothers reaction as an arachnaphobic when I was growing up. For context, my dad has poor sight and is registered partially blind so he struggles to see these kinds of things, so I got stuck with the hysterical screaming adult and fix things myself. I'd have to take time to handle some bigger docile species, I'm not too fond on actually physically picking them up, but I'm fine to trap and release. Not too bad considering responses to spiders I witnessed growing up. Funniest case of this was I was working in an office and it was autumn, getting chillier and that's when these guys start setting up shop indoors. One day I'm working and my boss (6'4, full beard, tattoos etc) suddenly looked up kinda nervously. I didn't know what was going on. Then it happened again and I caught a faint movement on the carpet. Took a hot minute for me to see this female house spider against the carpet. Now.... my boss couldn't handle them and was working on his phobia, I'm just like lemme grab a plastic up and some paper. Had to be fast because jesus could this thing move. I mean it's leg span was wider than that of the cup itself. He admired it up close until I offered for him to take it out and it moved. He freaked out again. I went out through reception and had half a dozen people as well as the receptionist skitter away in terror. I'm like, chill. I got this. I was called on for other critter releases since I was the only person in the damn building that seemed to have 'no fear'

Great to see and hear a Brit doing a video on our spiders. However good this video was, and it was a good video, there was one small error. *NOT* all true spiders, and I don't mean the non-spider, Camel Spider, a venomous. _"Uloboridae is a family of non-venomous spiders, known as cribellate orb weavers or hackled orb weavers. Their lack of venom glands is a secondarily evolved trait. Instead, they wrap their prey thoroughly in silk, cover it in regurgitated digestive enzymes, and then ingest the liquified body."_ What I do enjoy is my missus' total fear of spiders of any size. If one of those long legged male or female House Spiders is found in the house, I'll know it's about when she screams! I'll go to her aid and pick it up and show her it's OK! Only to see her run up the stairs in fear. 🤔😲 😅🤣😂

When I lived in Seattle In an older house with a basement that was half unfinished and we would find several big ones daily but I will never forget the one that I found low on the wall by the toilet on the main floor. I was drying my hair and in the mirror I could see the toilet behind me and a large dark shape on the wall that I never noticed before. I immediately felt my heartbeat speed up and a sinking feeling like when you see a bad car crash and know any humans involved are going to be mangled beyond recognition and you are hesitant to get close enough to see the actual carnage because some things you just don’t want to have in your visual memory. Well I knew this was probably the biggest spider I’ve ever seen in Washington State but i am scared to death of them so getting a closer view of that large dark area wasn’t something I wanted to witness since I had to go sleep in the unfinished basement where my room was and where we already had too many encounters with those wicked eight legged beasties. Anyhoo I ran out with a scream and my roommate with her European boyfriend and his friend came to investigate. I told them what I suspected but they just made fun of my fear of spiders and teased me that they would come to my rescue and dispatch the little thing for me. I stayed in the living room by the front door in order to run out if that thing got away. What I heard coming from those two “manly men” vindicated my original fears. I heard “what the hell! ” “god that thing is huge” “that thing is the size of a tarantula!” “I’m not touching that without gloves.” “ do you guys have a broom?” They both came out of the bathroom looking shook and grossed out. Thank the Lord it was flushed down the toilet. They both lived in Belgium and had never seen a giant European house spider that large before. I guess they eat well in Seattle.

cardinal spider (tegenaria parietina) have a slightly longer legspan but the giant house spider (eratigena duellica) have a bigger and heavier body and are more robust build. in fact the eratigena species are the most robust build sub species of tegenaria.

giant house spiders lives in harmony with amaurobius ferox (black lace weaver). but instead of the giant house spider are non agressive to humans, black lace weaver bites immediately if you try to pick them up with your hands and their bite is painfull.

As I have said in the comments sections of other videos about Spiders, it doesn't matter what kind of Spider 🕷️ they are, I love 😘 them, so they're always welcomed around me!! Those nasty mosquitoes, flies, roaches and mice, among some other no good critters are what I love watching Spiders devour!!

I don’t have anything against them - in fact, in general, I’m pretty good with most all critters, (jumpers and cellars spiders get to stay as long as they want in my room for example) but unfortunately one too many encounters with these fellas showing up at 2am in my bed has made me way too jumpy to feel comfortable leaving them to their own devices when they get big. I don’t kill them though - just throw them out into the garage so they still have shelter and their own space, just not in the house itself.

We mostly see males of these but omgawd when you accidentally desterb a female. Did this as a kids with my sister. She was hiding in our toys. She literally chased us into the kitchen and my mum had to use a broom to get her outside. Sadly I've seen less and less spiders like this and more of those long leg ones that are everywhere now. I've even seen them attacking a house spider. I generally use the sneak technique to catching them. Wait till they're sat nice and still then attack with a glass before they see me coming. Then off back outside to the little dude.

This spider is the one that gives me nightmares, along with the cardinal. Usually a pint glass and an envelope is used, but on one occasion, a biscuit tin as the cardinals leg span was bigger that the pint glass. My ex partner who was a yorkshire lady, always said they look bigger down south. Fantastic creatures, butas much as I love them, I am still arachnophobic😂

I have picked up hundreds of them, some of a considerable size, never been nipped by one. Even if you were to be, their venom is not strong enough to do harm to a human, or even a mouse. Their diet consists only of small insects, flies, moths and beetles etc.
