    This applies to all houseplants and is a reason to not buy sale plants that don’t look healthy unless u isolate them for a few weeks. Great info for new plant parents. Thanks

    Black Spots on Hoya are also a Symptom of a Shore Fly ingestation. Seen mainly in plants from large growers & Greenhouses. The flies deficate on the leaves (ie. The Black spots). This in turn burns the leaves. Making your plant highly susceptible to fungal & viral infection because it ulcerates the leaves cuticles. If your plants are not properly treated ( The Soil Must Be Treated), the Shore Fly larva will feast on your plants roots and eventually will kill it by rotting the roots or by weakening the plant so much that it succumbs to fungal or viral infections. What will also happen if not treated is the Shore Fly larvae will hatch out of the soil and infest all of your plants. It's a nasty viscious cycle of which came first the chicken or the egg. You could treat for a fungal infection when it may not be a fungal infection yet or maybe starting but what is really going on is an infestation of Shore Fly. Fungus gnats can also add to this problem if not treated.

    Thank You! I have been looking everywhere on KZread for this. It seems no one has info on fungus or black spot but you. Your video was very through and informative. I have a hoya compacta that has black spot, I think. It is still small, and I think I will throw It out, I love that plant, but if it is not going to completely go away then out it goes, don't want it to spread. Thank you for a great video!

    Thank you!! Yea unfortunately as indoor grower, it's hard to achieve high humidity and air flow at the same time. The imbalance between these two increases the chance of fungal infection. Well... we live and we learn right? 😅

  • @TheahLil

    @TheahLil

    @@amandalaw7131 Exactly. I live in southern AZ so it's really quite dry here. Its hard for me to have the humidity I want, BUT on the other hand it's inclined against fungal issues and mold. The DID have incredibly bad spider mites last year in my outdoor garden because it was just soooo dry and hot - conditions they thrive in. If its not one thing, its another! and yeah, live and learn, it's the only way. It's how we become experts in the horrible things haha.

    I would recommend mancozeb or Myclobutanil based fungicide. These didn't seem to have caused any harm to my plants. I had very bad experience with liquid copper - absolutely burned my monstera and philodendron leaves and even made the new shoots deformed.

    Question: If putting the physan in the soil, I worry about it killing bacteria. Healthy soil has beneficial bacteria, as we know. Is it worth basically sterilizing the soil?

  • @amandalaw7131

    @amandalaw7131

    3 жыл бұрын

    You're absolutely correct. Physan might kill helpful bacteria and fungus too. Just like when some of us decided to use systemic pest control, it might kill beneficial insects such as bees too. So it really come down to weighing the pros and cons. In my situation, I decided to use Physan20 because I must control the fungal infection or my plant would die. I will then repot my plants with new soil and add mycorrhizae to populate the beneficial bacteria and fungus again.

    I would try to treat it with fungicide first. If only part of the leaves have black spots, try cutting just that part.

    If I removed all the diseased leaves, there will be no leaves because there was only 1 leaf when I bought it. Will it grow with just a stem & a piece of green tendril? It’s a Hoya Vitellinoides.

    Thanks for the info. Can fungal infections happen even when the humidity isn't that high? I have some mystery problem plants that I can't quite figure out. Also, not hoya related, but I LOVE your haircut!! It looks super cute and fresh!!

  • @amandalaw7131

    @amandalaw7131

    It could. At least in my experience, the #1 cause of fungal infection is lack of airflow. I would look into it if your humidity is over 50% or 60% and if you're using organic material as your medium. And thank you!! 😊
