All about edible flowers with Tanya from Lovely Greens...

Edible flowers are growing increasingly popular. But which ones should you grow and how to use them? Here Tanya Anderson of Lovely Greens answers some of the most common questions about edible flowers, and talks about her new book, A Woman's Garden - Grow Beautiful Plants and Make Useful Things. It features eight beautiful gardens which all have a specific aim in mind - such as a garden for skin care plants, edible flowers, culinary herbs, grow-your-own veg, medicinal herbs, herbs for the home, plants for craft and plant dyes.

    I love borage, and so do the honey bees. They have beautiful blue star like flowers that resemble a mild cucumber flavor. I have seen professional cooks use them to adorn a meal, but I use them on my salad. The tender young leaves are edible and the larger leaves can be made into tea. I grew them for the first time last year, and this year I'll be growing more. Last year I put borders and fencing around my edibles to prevent the dog leg lift. My neighbor's cat was sneaking in and using my new raised beds for a litter box. Fortunately, I discovered it early. Removing any waste and then pouring boiling water over those spots to be sure everything is killed before planting.

    I've just had borage land in my garden via a kind bird, or maybe the wind, so I'll try the leaves in tea.

    Three things in order of relevancy: 1. This really brought me back to my childhood. I was, let's say, a taster of things that may or may not have been digestible. Pica, they call it, except most kids grow out of it by age 3 or so. I never did. However, one of the things I ate by the HANDFUL were clover flowers, all clover flowers, because I had been told they were edible and I loved them. I remember the other kids thinking I was "weird." But they were one of the few things I didn't have to hide that I ate because I could just announce that they were edible. 2. I get disproportionately interested in accents. Tanya's accent sounded like a combination of American (or maybe Canadian) English, and British English, maybe a 65%/35% split with the 65% being American? I know it's really none of my business, so not asking for her personal history. Just remarking. 3. Although I've seen a gazillion microphones in videos, for the first minute or two, Alexandra, I thought "Oh what a cute pin to hold her scarf closed.".

    I remember enjoying clover flowers too as a child. Tanya is American living on the Isle of Man, and she talks about that in one of her videos. And thanks for the microphone spot - I'm always wishing I could conceal it more, but I don't want to cover it up. Sound is the most difficult part of a video!

    @@TheMiddlesizedGarden Yes, even the super experienced KZread people talk about the difficulty of getting consistently good sound. I don't think I've seen your earliest videos, but your sound has always seemed good to me. Must be quite tricky, though. Probably a good idea that you do most of your speaking separate from the images of plants and gardens? I don't know anything, but that seems like a way to cut down on the problems of talking while you're walking around, especially outside.

    Great info. Especially the point of the drifting of chemicals, etc. as my home is located near quite a lot of agricultural land. So I suppose even if I tried growing organically there still may be good reason for caution i.e. washing veg very thoroughly. Also, in spring my lawn and garden is brimming with violets. Now I'm wondering if they'd be safe to use. Thanks ✌🐝🌺 em in va

  • @TheMiddlesizedGarden

    @TheMiddlesizedGarden

    I think it depends on how close - if you have hedges protecting some of the drift, and the farmland is not absolutely beside your garden, for example, then any violets would probably be OK. And also when they spray - if they spray in, say, spring, then any violets coming up in summer wouldn't be affected.

    Don't jump to conclusions by what you think of the title. A Woman's Garden features and lifts up women gardeners who have created their own growing spaces and farms on their own. This idea, and the plants and ideas introduced, are here to inspire a new crop of gardeners and to demonstrate the possibilities of plants ✌💚
