It’s cool how every time I get interested in a dog dogumentary either makes a new video or already has a video of the breed

To those looking at getting a husky. Here is my experience from owning one. 1. They are very smart and can be independent in their thinking, so can be stubborn at times to listen 2. Great escape artist 3. not good off leash - they love to run and don't have the best recall. 4. shed a lot 5. need a lot of exercise 6. are not good alone - expect some howling 7. Terrible guard dogs - very people friendly In saying that, I Loved having a Husky. He was a great dog with a lot of personality, adventurist and great around people/family. If your a first time dog owner please do not rush and get this dog because of its looks. Do your research first. Now have a German Shepherd because I wanted a dog to guard over my family. And in my humble opinion the GSD is one of the most loyal, loving, obedient and protective dogs you can own :)

They are not terrible guard dogs check out kob_unleashed on Instagram he literally has a dog that is the same size as a kangal and trains his dog for for many things including protection work

I have been involved with Siberian huskies for over 20 years. They are a wonderful breed, but not a breed for everyone. They are very vocal and need a lot of excercise. If you work an 8+ hour shift, this is not the dog for you. Don't get one because you want a nice show piece on your couch. They are terrible guard dogs as well. If you can provide a lot of time, excercise, discipline, commitment and love, it is a very wonderful dog.

Adopted a "border collie mix" from a shelter and it was evident by 6 months she wasn't. Predominantly husky (none of the coloring except the beautiful blue eyes), but I'm in no way disappointed. I work from home and love her talkativeness. So much company. Great with my kid. Couldn't ask for a better dog. However, I am very happy I'm home most of the time because she definitely needs that.

Totally agree my boy Bandit still acts and pulls like a 2 year old even though he's about to turn 10 nearly 0 health issues a couple of upset tummies but I put that down to a crap food before I switched him to raw food diet

@@OdditiesOffcial Hopefully others reading through the comments will be able to read the comments in the spirit in which they are given: to inform those who may not be familiar with the breed in order that the dog end up in the best possible living situation. People who care about dogs always advocate what’s best for the dog, and hopefully emotionally mature people will be able to see that.

My first dog was part husky and he always tried to escape the house or yard whenever he could. We would chase him but he always stayed just far enough ahead. We’d eventually give up and go home, and always found him sitting on the back porch waiting to be let back in the house. Lucky for us, he was also part collie and part chow chow, so he was very smart and incredibly loyal and always came home within several minutes of leaving. He had crazy fury paws with fur that stuck out the bottom AND top between his toes. He also loved shoving his face into snowdrifts. He was an amazing dog.

My first husky was a nightmare regardless of what training and exercise I did 😅 My second, her son is the best dog ive ever had. A lot of variation in the breed but they are great

Honestly every time I watch a Dogumentary TV video it makes me fall in love with the breed even more. I don't even a favourite dog now XD.

My husky is basically a cat in a dogs body Edit: allow me to rephrase. She's like a cat in that she sleeps and drinks milk. In every other way, she's a dog

They must be on a leash or else they bolt, they are not suited to hot climates, they need a ton of exercise if not they will tear up the house, they bark a lot. Wonderful dogs but they need attention

I loved all the info in this video. Explaining what they are doing at dog shows was helpful, even though it was specified to the Huskies. Sometimes I've fallen asleep w/KZread autoplay; watching this channel or Cesar the Dog Whisperer reruns. The wake up to marathon AKC channel dog show videos! Of course I end up watching them. These are really sweet dogs. But I think I'll watch videos of them instead of getting a puppy of my own. :Thanks for putting them online :)

@@robmckenney666 Very true Rob. They require a lot of time and personal attention. They never want to be separated from their owner!!

They were left to fend for them selves by their people especially during the winter times, and thats why they have a high prey drive having to feed and fend for them selves. Its why theyre independent aswell and dont really need humans to rely on.

Great escape artists too they will dig under or climb over fences. They are stubborn as hell and the shedding is ridiculous that said great with kids and super protective mine would not let people or dogs near my sons push chair the only time he ever showed teeth to anything. He definitely makes a great family member how he talks back is so funny sometimes forget hes a dog and not a person

Love Dogumentary but I really don’t care for how to act In a show ring or how to win a title (aesthetics and superficial stuff)I just want to learn about different breeds and about living with those breeds, their personalities and needs for being happy and healthy

There are separate tests for working ability. Some breeds have special classes in the show ring for dogs that have certificates of their working ability. All this varies by breed and between the different Kennel Clubs and breed associations of the world.

This is why breed specific ability tests exist. Like Road Work for Dalmatians and Coursing for Sighthounds.

my AKC dog breed book says huskies are 22-24 inches tall, and 55-65 pounds, so no, being 24 inches it's not disqualification, neither 65 pounds, or at least for the breed, not for the show dogs, the breed can be perfectly a medium-large dog breed being purebred, now, show standards are a completely different thing. i also had huskies and malamute through my life story

This is the equivalent to models, not realistic to what is out there on a every day basis. My husky is absolutely beautiful, he gets compliments all the time but he looks a little more stockier because his coat is just a little more thick and longer. Makes him look like a small wolf even more. He weighs about 65 lbs I would say.

Some of the comments made regarding history are incorrect. Also, I think showing dogs is a pretty unrealistic way to judge any dog.

Can this "working dog : (4:56) do anything besides being a pretty looking statue?; it's unfortunate that "Show breeders" continue to do a disservice to working breeds by intentionally watering down their drives for their own selfish agenda of boasting their egos in AKC Confirmation. When a working breed is "free" to do what it was bred for they are most happy, AKC Dog Shows is just for human gratification.

I can't speak for that dog but I do know that your dog can be an AKC champion and still work. That dog can be a therapy dog, or hell even a service dog for someone. Though I do agree that AKC has watered down a lot of breeds it still stands to reason that a dog can look great and still work even if it's not the job it was bred for in the beginning

There are tons of AKC champion Siberians who also do sledding on the weekends, the drive is absolutely still there regardless of the pretty exterior. A few hugely prominent show breeders actively do sledding for competition and leisure and produce dogs who thrive in both the show and the snow.

@@mexicanine Yeah but lots of dogs do sledding on weekends. How many iditarod AKC Siberian teams are there? Most people use Alaskans, which are a blend of native dog and other dogs.

​@@Janeway1269 The Iditarod is a modern race (started in 1973) and all the dogs are Alaskan huskies because those were build for more speed and endurance than any breed in existence. That does not negate the fact that more races exist than the Iditarod, it's not the end-all when it comes to racing. If you look at early kennels (and even modern kennels) there are hundreds who participate in competition racing whose dogs are also champions, especially kennels in New England where competitive dogsledding really took off. Many of Seppala's dogs that he produced became show champions too! The breed is completely unchanged to how it was in the early 1900's. Kennels of notability that did competitive sledding as well as showed were: Chinook, Monadnok, Igloo Pak, Innisfree, Yeso Pac, Foxhaunt- and many more!

I think back yard breeders are probably contributing to out of standard size and coats, the long coats aren't preferred because when working snow and ice will freeze to the long fur.

The husky's shown pulling a sled were in their winter coat. The summer coat is a lot lighter so the dog looks smaller. If you see a very tall "husky" it might be an Alaskan Husky, a Malamute, a cross, etc. Working dogs are often mixes.

Might just be season. My girl has always looked kinda streamlined and thin but puts on a little weight for the winter, and of course the coat gets twice as thick. The boys are generally much more broad, masculine in appearance

"Show" huskies have the same standard and look as original huskies have since the early 1900's! They are supposed to be smaller and leaner to be able to do the work they were bred for. A lot of the modern huskies you see in public are backyard bred, overweight, and oversize examples of the breed.

Exactly. I worked in Finland with sled dogs. They had Siberian husky’s, Alaskan husky’s and malamutes. The Siberian’s were the slowest and their stamina was the worst.. 😂

Yeah, no, their inherent traits make them bad guard dogs and any training would have to work against their very nature. If you need a guard dog, just get a breed that has territorial behavior and doesn't have inherent friendliness to all humans.

They are great family dogs, but fi require there exercise. I have two and one was a nightmare...ran for miles with her twice a day and still was never enough 😅 her son is a couch potato but still loves to go fit his daily run, just generally lazy

Sadly other then the dog looking really awful (definitely from a bad breeder) it does not look abused so if I called the cops I would look like the asshole 😔

I literally hate show breeders lmao. Go look at real huskies up north, the "Iditarod" dogs pull sleds for 2000 miles. That's unbelievable, but yes let's focus on their confirmation.
