This is my absolute favorite franchise, so I kinda love all of them (not counting the AvPs). Each movie brings something new, a fresh take on the same idea. All those talented directors bring something special, so I find merit in each one. But of course some of them are just a bit better than the others, so my ranking would be: 1. Hey Sean. Just watched Alien (theatrical cut) for the first time last night. After watching your video, do you have a preference between the director's cut and the theatrical cut of Alien?

My rankings (no Prometheus because I haven't seen it): 7. Aliens Vs. Predator: Requiem- Boy do I hate this movie. Can't see a thing, characters suck, I don't like the Predalien, the gore is too much. I hate this movie more than anything else. 6. Alien 3- Depressing from start to finish, bleak, boring, killed off my favorite character in the Alien franchise, which was Hicks, in such a disgusting way for his character. Hate it 5. Alien Resurrection- bad but so bad it's good. Fun watch 4. Alien Vs Predator- Not bad. Pretty fun, good action, great creature designs, decent characters. Pretty fun watch. 3. Alien Covenant- better prequel to Alien than Prometheus was. I liked the protomorph, nenomoroh was okay, characters were really cool, acting was good and the action was fluent. 2. Alien- Amazing scares, inventive idea, great characters, had the best version of Ripley if you ask me. Just about everything was great. 1. Aliens- my 5th favorite movie ever. A true masterpiece

What's your 4 other favourite films?

I would rank them as 1. Alien - Classic, original for it's time, scary introduction to the xeno and universe 2. Aliens - expanded upon the xenos in the perfect way but rehashes the original near the end 3. Prometheus - Has a lot of dumb horror tropey moments but has great original ideas and builds upon the universe 4. Alien 3 - ruins end of aliens but on its own has a decent story and worthy end to Ripley's character 5. Covenant - Ruined the mystery of the Xenos, 10x dumber decisions than Prometheus but cool body horror and Aliens 6. AvP - Dumb, fun shlock but i prefer the slower more atmospheric horror Alien films and no good characters 7. Ressurection - Just offensive but at least it has Sigourney again... 8. AvP: Requiem - Dogshit, turns the franchises into a stock slasher movie

this is just my opinion i just want to get it out there but i enjoied the exploration of how the xenomorphs work. because if there is nothing to back up how it works then it just becomes absolute bull shit. its nice to have some cannon ground to theorise on. so thats why i think i enjoied alien covenant more than some others, allso its finaly back in the hands of the origional director ridley scott. and this film would have actualy been the second aliens movie if 20th century fox had agreed. but sence 20th centry fox owned the movie, they also owned the franchise

Loving all the ranking videos Sean. I'm one of those weirdos who loves watching really long KZread videos! I couldn't rank the Alien franchise because I haven't watched all of them and I don't intend to anytime soon. I may check out the assembly cut of Alien 3 but I'm not planning on watching any of the others after that! Out of the ones that I've seen I would rank them: 1. Alien 2. Aliens 3. Alien: Covenant 4. Prometheus Or as I like to call them, Alien: Nostromo, Alien: Sullaco, Alien: Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. That way they all share similar subtitles!

AvP started of *very very* slow as well as how stupid it is that the predators guns get stolen and when they get them back the predator *becomes friends!!!!* with the girl! But I do like the 15 minutes of Alien and Predator fighting. The Alien part of this movie is better than the Predator part.

I saw Prometheus in theaters without knowing that is was connected to the Alien series at all. A friend just asked if I wanted to go, told me it was sifi, so I said yes. I totally get why people don’t like it, but I enjoyed it while not knowing it was an Alien movie. And then when it became an Alien movie it was an odd and interesting surprise.

My ranking video for this drops tomorrow. We have very similar thoughts towards Alien 3 and AVPR. There's small chance some of my ranking may make you a little...not happy :) But it was fun.

I wouldn't worry about my opinion. It's the other fans. They're vicious. I just get confused by people that want the aliens to be the work of our creator's creation's creation turning on his creators and they're creators. I can't fathom why anyone would like that.

Ridley Scott knows we've seen movies before, he knew we knew it was david but thats what makes it so suspenseful in the final act. Then our suspicions are confirmed and its creepy as hell

Right?? To me, the twist wasn't that it was actually David on the ship. Anyone who's seen a movie before expected that. The actual twist was that it was David on the ship and he WON. The villain won 100%. and the film just ends on that bleak note. I thought that was a really bold choice that paid off.

Actually agree with your list probably the most of anybody on here. I do like 3 maybe even more than you do though

For me: 8. AVP: Requiem (even though in some weird way this is my favorite guilty pleasure). 7. Alien Resurrection (Couldn’t stand the characters, the tone and direction did not fit this franchise at all). 6. Alien vs. Predator (Fun stuff but I don’t consider it canon, because it’s kind of silly). 5. Alien 3 (I actually like this film, if not for all of the studio meddling I think it could’ve been great). 4. Alien: Covenant (I feel like the Xenomorph was misused in the movie, and it wasn’t very scary. I still appreciate the new direction Scott took it to). 3. Prometheus (This one almost ties Alien: Covenant, because it had some of the same problems). 2. Alien (Obvious classic, but had a slower pace than #1). 1. Aliens (Like Alien but on steroids. I love the action and horror combination).

18:28 That really put me off as well. I think what they should've done was not end the scene where David started reaching for the knife and end the scene scene where Walter is apparently winning, making the plot twist unexpected then just add the standard cinematic backstory continuation of that fight where David actually overwhelms Walter in the end.

Weaver's best performance is in Alien 3.

Great list with great explanations I can totally understand. However my totally different list goes as follows: 1. Aliens (The best sci-fi/horror/action ever, period.) 2. Alien (The best sci-fi/horror movie that started this fantastic series.) 3. Prometheus (The installment that finally brought new life to this dying franchise.) 4. Alien: Covenant (A huge missed opportunity that should've been Prometheus 2.) 5. Alien: Ressurection (Would've been a great come-back were it not for the awful humor.) 6. Alien VS Predator (A fun WHAT IF flick but missed the mark due to the PG13 rating.) 7. AVP2: Requiem (An OK follow-up "Predator" movie with Aliens and dumb humans.) 8. Alien resurrection is better than alien 3 but that's not saying much it's still bad.

My personal list (feel free to let me know your opinion) 9 Alien 3 - For the same reasons Sean expressed in his video. Good acting can't save a movie script that ruins the previous (and much better) movie 8 Alien vs Predator- it hasn't aged very well if you ask me 7 Alien 3 Director's Cut- few good changes can't safe and take away the attention from the problems the movie has 6 Alien vs Predator Requiem- this is simply an extremely gory slasher flick, nothing more, nothing less 5 Alien Resurrection- for me, it's a guilty pleasure. The tone makes it feel out of place but it has some good ideas, handled in the wrong way but it's still interesting. Also dear god the cast is great 4 Alien Covenant- in two worlds: not bad. Below average. The ending was predictable and there are some wooden characters but the atmosphere and Michael Fassbender are enough to make you entertained. 3 Prometheus- unpopular opinion i know. As an Alien movie it disappoints, but as a movie set in the alien universe i found it very interesting Also here, great cast 2 Alien- A sci-fi masterpiece; it's a movie that takes its own time until a third act that will have most people on the edge of their seats. It's full of suspense and thrills. The claustrophobic surroundings of the space ship in which the protagonist are trapped with the alien that uses the airvents to move around instill in the viewer a sense of fear and paranoia 1 Aliens- one of the best blend of generes ever created: part sci-fi, part Horror, part action, all masterpiece Aliens is a suspensefull thriller that has the same claustrophibic atmosohere of the first film while adding action scenes and new thrills making it a must see among cinema fans The only reason that Aliens is higher tham Alien it's that it is more fast paced, making it a little bit more fun to see (especially with friends) and re-watchable Also the Chemistry between the cast is as good (if noot evene better) as the first film P.S. A couple years later but I just watched Aliens for the first time and boy is it great. I love how Alien VS Predator includes a franchise that you said in Alien has one of your top and worst movies of all time and for me Predator is my 6th Favorite Movie ever and Predator 2 is my 2nd Least Favorite Movie Ever.

Great analysis of the Ripley character in Aliens. I still find enjoyment in alien 3, but like most people dislike how they killed off newt and hicks. But tbh I still enjoy the hopeless vibe of the prison planet.

Out of the films I have seen- 5. Alien 3 (so confusing and falls short of great ambition) 4. Alien Covenant ( I liked the 2nd act and the stuff with David but the changes are so tonally jarring ) 3. Alien (Don't get me wrong, Alien is great, but its a little slow at times and I didn't have as much fun watching as the other ones 2. Prometheus ( This movie isn't as legendary as Alien but I had a blast watching it. It was refreshing to see the alien universe in a new light) 1. LOL!! I love your list! Your take on Prometheus was dead-on!! I don’t like this convoluted origin story for the Alien universe either!!!!! But I like where you placed Alien 3 too!!

Alien versus Predator is in a lot of comic books and it is Canon.

My List: Alien and Aliens- Both amazing films for the two different styles that they were made Alien: Covenant- Enjoyable film despite having issues, some nice moments Alien Vs Predator- Fun and dumb film, but adds a more believable mythology than Prometheus (however no longer canon) Prometheus- Introduces a lot of new mythology, but was over complicated and not that fun to watch Alien 3- Very disappointing movie, however did have a few good moments Alien Resurrection- Interesting premise but poor execution that made it feel like a bad SYFY channel movie Aliens Vs Predator: Requiem- has to be the worst in my opinion. When you can't even see half the stuff that's happening on screen you know you've got yourself a poorly made film.

That's a great list and the most important thing is that first two movies are in the top 2 spots! I've always been more of a Horror junkie than an action fan, so the original Alien will always be my favorite, but Aliens is one of the best movies I've ever seen in regards to how well it holds up through the passage of time, both thematically and visually. My rankings are: 1. Alien - First one I saw and one of the absolute best Horror movies of all time. This is THE movie that made outer space scary and I occasionally have "space nightmares" not about xenomorphs specifically (they're often in Star Trek or Star Wars settings), but very much the same tone as this movie. 2. Aliens - I can't add much on top of what's already been said, but the characterization is also one of the best I've ever seen, Avatar borrows heavily from this movie. 3. Alien vs Predator - Yes, it's a bit corny, but I've always loved this since it came out. I think it works better as a Predator movie to be honest, but I can't imagine a better way to tell this story. 4. Alien 3 - Despite this movie taking a hard left, this is actually the first nihilistic movie I've ever enjoyed, though it took me years to fully embrace it. The scene with the funeral interlaced with the new xenomorph's birth is one of the most iconic, darkest, and memorable in film history imo. 5. Alien: Resurrection - I've actually always liked this despite the hate it's received, though it has not aged all that well over time and I agree that the worst part is the last 15 minutes because that final monster was absolute crap, but everything else was a good time. 6. Prometheus - I really enjoyed this movie and the squid c-section scene is one of the most tense and terrifying things I've ever seen in any movie and as a die-hard Horror fan, I had a difficult time watching that scene. Plus, I loved the David character and all his creepiness and loved Noomi Rapace as the lead. Unfortunately, this would have ranked around #3 if Covenant hadn't sucked. 7. Aliens vs Predator: Requiem - This movie might not be that bad if we could see what was going on, but between the extremely dark lit scenes, the shaky camera, and the extremely fast change in camera-cuts, this movie is unwatchable. 8. Alien: Covenant - I totally sympathize with those that hate Alien 3 because I hate Covenant for doing the exact same thing with Rapace's character, but both Prometheus and Covenant were directed by Ridley, so he's ruining the ending to his own movie! By wiping out the Engineers (which took a matter of seconds in between movies), he's obliterated his own world/lore-building. And I felt like he took a somewhat mysterious and complex character in David and reduced him to a mustache twirling villain. I did like the monsters in here, but it wasn't enough to balance out the negatives.

First off, I believe everything in this franchise has its moments, even if some are unfortunately buried deep beneath the overwhelming bad also present in the majority of these films. I also have not seen either of the newest films in the franchise, so this list will only feature the original quadrilogy. (Side note: I am not including the crossover movies with the Predator franchise in my ranking as to keep the list strictly Alien). But here is my ranking and rating of all 4 movies that I have seen in the Alien franchise, plus a quick review to justify their placement. With that out of the way, let's begin. 1. Alien. What is there even to say when it comes to this film. It is a spectacle of cinema. The way Ridley Scott so perfectly combines both the sci-fi and horror genres together is marvellous. The film is directed incredibly, and for a movie made in the late 70s, it hold up spectacularly all these years later. The design and animatronics of the actual Alien are also superb, still looking amazing by today's standards. All that combine with an amazing cast, each playing amazingly written characters makes for one the best film experiences you will ever have. I give Alien a 10/10. 2. Aliens You all knew that if Alien was ranked first, Aliens would surely be next. Well, you're indeed correct. What an amazing followup to an all time classic. Everything done expertly in the original is done even better in its sequel. The movement of the Xenomorphs are much more visible thanks to the film's grander scale, allowing you to fully appreciate the forces at work here. Once again, you have a perfect cast and amazing characters, a perfect setting which successfully builds out the franchise, and absolutely fantastic action. And if I don't even feel completely set in putting this 2nd. My ranking between the first two films could change week to week, but right now, I'm leaning more towards the claustrophobic atmosphere of the first movie on board the Nostromo, elements that are still present in Aliens, but just simply not as prominent. I give Aliens a 10/10. 3. Alien³ I know this may be a shock to most people, especially those who are diehard fans of Aliens, but I would say that Alien³ is the third best film of this franchise. My decision to put this installment here rather than further along the list, as most often do, is because I honestly really enjoy the gothic tone and atmosphere of this film. Granted, the film has its flaws. Some that come to mind are the Alien's dated CGI in some scenes, the mostly forgettable characters (par Aaron, Dillon, and Clemens, who I believe to be standouts of the new cast), and the soul crushing opening that mercilessly kills off three fan favourite characters before they can even receive any screen time, as well as immediately undoing the previous film's feeling of victory and hope in the process. But the reason I'm somewhat forgiving of the film's treatment of previous characters, is because this is a franchise that shouldn't have to make you feel safe for its characters in order to satisfy its audience, and nowhere is that more prominent than in Alien³. So, with all said and done, I give Alien³ an 8/10. 4. Alien: Ressurection As most fans of Aliens cannot enjoy Alien³, I, as a fan of Alien³, just simply cannot enjoy this movie, nor respect it at all. It takes the crushing ending of the previous film, with Ripley sacrificing herself to prevent the company she's been running from for 3 films from capturing the Alien, in such a strange way that feels to far disconnected from it to make any logical sense. Ripley doesn't feel like Ripley anymore, which obviously she isn't meant to, but as a fan of her character's journey over the course of the previous 3 films, it hurts to see her reduced to.. this. Another issue is the way that they actually treat the company itself, an antagonist built up over the course of 3 films, wasted. Written out of the story in a single scene. The whole movie also just has this tone leaning way too far towards comedy for my liking. However, as with Covenant, there are a few promising aspects buried deep beneath which I will now cover. Though I'm not a fan of Ripley's characterisation in this film, her relationship with the android Call, played by Winona Ryder, is certainly the most interesting aspect to the film. I also believe the Newborn to be an effective final antagonist, for the sole reason that such an abomination still managing to force emotion from its audience is astonishing. Some scenes, such as the underwater scene, have an interesting premise to them if not entirely executed in the best way. And the chestburster/head bite kill will remain one of the beat of the franchise for me. And that's pretty much all I have to say for this film. I just find it to be an unnecessary continuation of the story which, I believe, concluded satisfyingly with Alien³. I know that there are fans of it, but I give Alien: Ressurection a 2.5/10. I hope you enjoyed my list (it took me a while to construct, and probably almost as long a time for you to read, if you actually did, that is). I also hope I may have been able to sway your mind into giving some films of this franchise a second look, and would love to hear your thoughts in the replies, because maybe you could persuade me to reevaluate my thoughts as well.

I have Alien 3 and Resurrection left. I also have to re-watch Requiem to remember it, although the literal movie darkness of it does ring a bell. Honestly, I love them all so far and that's probably because I didn't grow up on them. I definitely was aware of them and had seen at least the first one, but was never pulled in like I was with Predator. So, when I became very interested, I started at the beginning with Prometheus. I've been working to connect all the movies in my mind and do research on what I can. I want so badly to tie Predator in, so that the big picture of it all makes sense and all movies have a place. Then again, I've heard 3 switches a lot up, I guess I'll just have to see. With that said, if it all doesn't work, I can enjoy each film separately. To be honest, trying to connect it all leaves me wondering and imagining, and I watched a documentary on Alien that showed that type of thinking for the viewer was the goal. This has got to be one of the best movie franchises I've ever watched.
