Love the remake of Girl with the Dragon Tatoo and Zodiac. I just love how David Fincher tells the stories of these real life events but can also direct fiction. It's amazing. I especially love his episodes of Mindhunter.

I think Nolan was inspired by The Social Network for Oppenheimer because both have the jury happening simultaneously with the events that caused the problem.

That's a very weak link imo. Playing with time and cutting scenes across time is a pretty standard Nolan technique, plus he talks often about the decision to interlace time periods in Oppenheimer, it was definitely thought of independent from that scene.

@@notaspeck6104 I feel like he’s more referring to the courtroom scenes rather than the actual idea of time jumping. Nolan was always gonna play with time but I think there’s a possibility he was specifically inspired by all of the courtroom drama scenes that helped raise the tension bc those moments are very similar to social network

Fincher is one of the Top filmmakers of my lifetime. My #1 is absolutely unquestionably SE7EN. One of the few films I've seen in my life that I can unacquivacly call "perfect". Not only does it have the best finale I've ever seen in film, it's just masterfully crafted. It still hits every time I watch it. I LOVE IT.

Alien 3 was the first Alien I ever saw. I watched it again and again (as you tend to do when you're a kid). As a consequence, I still really enjoy it. I like the stellar British cast and the gloom (to an extent). I've definitely soured on it in recent years though. It's unnecessarily bleak and could have been so much better. But the power of nostalgia lives on...

The Killer is a masterpiece. One of the songs in the film is how soon is now and one part of the song says, “I am human and I need to be loved just like everybody else does”. The film is a great exploration of someone who could leave there life but chooses not to because they feel as if they have to. At the end the killer chooses to spare a life but still threatens them. This means that the film can have it’s cake and eat it to. The audience has some hope but still feels dreadful, just like other great Fincher films like, The Social Network, Seven and Gone Girl.

And @ thewhofandom6711 - calm down. I'm sick of every fourteen year old tossing that word around for every goddam thing they see. The Killer is nowhere near Fincher's best. It's pretty well made, but ultimately just more Netflix content. The story is the most basic cookie-cutter, direct-to-video mold you've seen a thousand times, even if under Fincher's direction it's presented better than most. There's nothing important or unique about it.

I really enjoyed Alien 3 back when I first saw it, almost as much as I liked the OG Alien movie (which I didnt like nearly as much as most). Probably should rewatch the original. Regardless, I probably have it as Fincher's worst just because it is the least rewatchable of his works, having a franchise tied to it Favourite - The Social Network (defining movie of the 2010s and the digital era. Even though it is a heavily exaggerated tale of reality, it works due to its always relevant character conflicts, whether it is in modern times or not. Perfect mix of brilliant directing with amazing screenwriting)> After The Social Network, maybe I would put Gone Girl. Still really want to see Benjamin Button, Panic Room and Mank (need to see citizen kane first)

Exactly. That twist ending was all a part of the company's plan. I mean, it was all a freaking game from start to finish. Everything had been set up by the company. Hence the title of the movie itself, "The Game." The title of the film fits and it makes perfect sense with the movie itself. Fincher's "The Game," folks. Starring Michael Douglas!

Here’s my list (haven’t seen Panic Room) 11- Alien 3 - 3/5 - in the midst of watching the Director’s Cut and even that’s not great. To be fair I wasn’t too hot on Aliens so maybe I’m a bit kinder to this. 10- Mank - 3.5/5 - it’s alright, but it feels weird for the film to try so hard to look like it’s from the time period only to cheap out on basic things like Aspect Ratio and performance. 9- The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - 4/5 - it’s fine, just a bit boring really. 8- The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo - 4/5 - it’s really great until the ending when it just drags and drags for no reason. The entire epilogue after they solve the central plot feels so tacked on. 7- The Killer - 4/5 - Fassbender is really cool 6- Fight Club - 4/5 - I really like the first hour and then they set up the actual Fight Club and I lose interest. 5- Gone Girl - 4.5/5 4- Se7en - 4.5/5 - it’s pretty standard and then we get to the last thirty minutes and holy crap! 3- The Social Network - 4.5/5 2- The Game - 5/5 - I love that ending. 1- Zodiac - 5/5 - I love this ending. What surprised me just now thinking about them is wow, Fincher’s got range. It might not look it, but if you really look at his work, he’s never really made the same kind of movie twice. He’s come close with things like Se7en and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo but even those have some real differences that set them apart. What’s cool about this is that you can still always tell when it’s a Fincher film.

The Game's ending works so well for me precisely _because_ of its improbability; it elevates and reshapes your sense of the rest of the story into what it always was but doesn't reveal itself to be until the very end: a fairy tale. A tender, moving moral fable along the lines of A Christmas Carol, and a subtly self-reflexive one for such a reputably cold and calculated filmmaker (Van Orton rediscovering his gratitude mirroring Fincher himself putting his faith into a happy ending for once)

Fincher is one of my favourite artists, so glad we're living in the same time as him and it won't be until much much later that his revolutions in VFX, crime cinema, cinematography, editing, and just overall storytelling are fully appreciated. My List: 12. Alien 3 (Yeah sure the opening sucks but we have Fincher's pitch-black carnal vision matched by a truly exceptional score by Elliot Goldenthal; it's all surface but man what an awesome surface.) 11. Se7en (Quite honestly I think this is a great lil wounded thriller with a pretty solid finale, really really brought to life by Shore's score, Khondji's shadows, all the actors, and Fincher's camera. I love the character conversations more than the ending and crime stuff.) 10. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (Quite honestly a bit too long and severe underuse of what should be a terrific premise despite some solid passages - namely the opening - a truly incredible score from Alexandre Desplat, still groundbreaking VFX work, and powerful performances.) 9. Mank (In many ways the typical neurotic self-destructive portrait but Fincher & Oldman's approaches are so far off the feeling of the times so as incredible as the score and cinematography are and as solid as it ultimately ends up being, the vision isn't fully unified.) 8. The Killer (Fincher is no stranger nor slump to the A-B plotting (see: Panic Room) so even if its heart is the same as Fight Club, the insularity of the film means its ideas smack you just as hard. Bone-dry sardonicism and then Tilda Swinton to thrillingly bring it home. It's also hilarious.) 7. Panic Room (An incredible bottle movie that maximizes screen space and masters claustrophobia of character and setting.) 6. The Game (Fincher always has a darkly comic mean streak and here he is too incredible at making a thriller for it all to be so hilariously undermined at the end; to me it works far better on later viewings and I really do love this one now. ) Rest of These Are Masterpieces: 5. The Social Network (Digital-era Citizen Kane; a perfectly-edited comedy of manners with Sorkin's tendency to over-dramatize highly controlled by Fincher's eye. What a wonderful picture.) 4. Fight Club (May be following out of the love of the way that Fincher doesn't quite follow the messaging of the film all the way but again, what a radical and savage piece of political commentary, so invigorating, so ruthless, so hilarious, so good.) 3. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Perfectly said by Sean: one of those movies where the writing is smarter than you - a digital era masterpiece about images and identity, perfect continuation of The Social Network with an ending that really snook up on me.) 2. Gone Girl (A jet-black comedy and good god is it hilarious, perfect ending to Fincher's digital-era trilogy to fully delve into surveillance, identity, images, and self-destruction - and it's thrilling and clever too! The fastest 2.5 hours I've ever seen by far.) 1. Zodiac (One of the very few perfect movies for me - too much to say but the best way I can put it is that it's an anti-procedural procedural, far more focused on the psychology rather than the facts despite searching of them. I'm completely rapt in every second of Zodiac unlike any other.)

Zodiack: On paper, including the cast, this movie has everything I should like, and yet somehow I find it incredibly boring. 5. Panic Room: For me, this movie just exists. 4. The Killer: The director's return to form. A good revenge movie and a great main role. 3. Seven: Great thriller with an amazing ending. 2. Social Network: addictive, fascinating, dynamic and well played! 1. Fight Club: David Fincher's Magnum Opus. Atmosphere, two main roles, intrigue WOW!

I don’t agree but each to their own. 12. Zodiac. I didn’t like the film, but I’m sure it’s well-made from memory. 11. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. the torture scene I found odd which is why it’s low on the list, but other aspects are fine. 10. Mank. It’s well done, good performance by Gary Oldman, but I agree on what was said in the video. 9. The Killer. A good leading performance by Michael Fassbender, but the story I don’t think is the greatest 8. The Game. I agree what was said about this film in the video. 7. The Social Network. For what it is, I still think it’s well-made. 6. The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button. It is whimsical, there are problems with the story I agree. Brad Pitt may not give the best performance but props to Cate Blanchett. 5. Gone Girl. Good twist very well-made film, I’ve read the book after. 4. Alien 3, It’s a flawed film, but it had potential though it shouldn’t be that high I know. 3. Panic Room. A very tense thriller, interesting villain played by Forest Whitaker, Jodie Foster a good lead and yes even young Kristen Stewart it was her debut so yeah. 2. Seven, I know that type of film is archetypal as pointed out in the video, but it is so well crafted, it’s rare for the villain to make an appearance only towards the end, of course very dark but purposeful. 1. Fight Club. It is a unique film, I guess I sort of knew the twist beforehand but I’m a millennial so I will know stuff beforehand we’ll some things but I put at number 1. I read the book too but of course like many well after seeing the film.

I must be nuts, but I liked Mank a lot. It was funny as hell, a pure reflection of what Fincher sees Hollywood as in reality, and the perils of taking all things personally. It has flaws (the sterile black and white for its own sake is a provoke for me). Now, The Killer may be a top three Fincher for me. A pared back, beautifully sharp story, a messy protagonist, and story centered around the rare thing of a meticulous professional doing what he sees as the wrong things every time. Also, there’s this underlying theme that modern society is designed to accommodate psychopaths like the lead character.
