Alienware Aurora R11: Up-gradable? What about those temps?

Ойындар

We open up an Alienware Aurora R11 to see what can and can't be easily upgraded. We also take a look at some gameplay footage to see what our temps can be.
Note: Doom was actually played for about 30 minutes before looking at temps.

@@creativevit5961 I just got the R11 1650/I-5 10400 air-cooled model for a deal price. If you have the 1660, you possibly have air cooling and the 550w power supply. For the CPU if you stick to air cooling your options are limited to the 65w i7 10700 or any other 10th gen 65w processor. If you get a used liquid cooler your options are much better as Many of the I7/I9 options are rated at 125w and the AIO is rated for those CPUs. I chose the i5-10600K (125W) and got a used OEM water cooler off of fleabay. As for graphics, If you have the 550w PSU, you will be limited to around a 220w GPU like the AMD 6650, Intel arc A770, RTX 3050, 3060, 2060 or a standard 2070 (non TI or S) and below. Be aware the card slot is 12 inches and Dell GPUs are custom 10.5 inch. Also remove any hard drive from the 3.5 bay as it seriously restricts airflow in the case. You can install a fan in the 3.5 bay connected with a PWM splitter if you feel the need. As for PSUs if you want high power GPUs, you will need the 1000w PSU from the R10-R12 series, be sure to get all the cables. Hope this helps.

I always advise to use the same brand, make and model of RAM whenever upgrading RAM as Intel and AMD both support dual channel memory. I upgraded the RAM to 32GB of DDR4-3000 CL15 Corsair Vengeance, but any brand should work. The 10th gen Intel will support up to DDR4-3200; just remember to enable the XMP profile. I fairly sure from doing some digging that the 3070 is a Gigabyte blower model that is simply rebranded. The 2070 Super in my own R11 is simply a PNY blower model. Blower models have their own pros and cons (mainly in that they are typically louder, but exhaust air outside of the case), and they generally perform on par other models. The R11s cooling doesn't really suit itself to overclocking the GPU. I am able to run a 5.1GHZ overclock with an under-volt on my 10700K with my radiator mod with no issues though.

I did not make a RAM installation video as there is nothing special or specific in how to upgrade / replace / swap out the RAM in the R11 compared to any other desktop computer. The F in Intel's ridiculous naming scheme simply refers to a CPU that does not have Intel onboard graphics. The K refers to a CPU with an unlocked multiplier and can be overclocked. So the 10700KF in this machine means it does not have onboard graphics and is overclockable.

  • @theonlyjoe6036

@@mrchairmold2979 The KF is a K series CPU without onboard graphics. In short, the KF series are K series CPUs whose IGP (integrated graphics processor) did not pass certification. Intel released the KF series to make up for the lack of supply for its K series CPUs. There are even reports of the KF series overclocking better than their K counter parts (but the reasons for this are dubious at best); my semi-professional engineering untested hypothesis is that disabling the graphics core and the pin reduction results in less heat and hence possibly better overclocks. RAM sticks should be the same make and model, and if you only have 2 sticks, should be plugged into the same color of RAM slot on the MOBO. This has always been an issue with Intel, and it doesn't matter who you buy (or even build) your computer from. Intel loves to change the socket of the CPU from year to year, and so you are typically stuck with an upgrade path with in the same generation of CPU (unless you want to replace the motherboard and RAM too). AMD Ryzen is better known for sticking with the same socket for a little bit; ie. the 2000 series Ryzen and 3000 Ryzen both use the same socket and a clear upgrade path is in place. Dell does offer an AMD Ryzen version of the Aurora, but they are actually not very cost competitive (most likely due to the Intel's generous bulk pricing for Dell). That said, the money you would spend on an 8 to 15 percent increase from CPU generation to generation (nowadays anyway) would be better spent on upgrading your graphics card or adding an NVME harddrive. Just look at the fact that the Intel 7700K from a few years ago is still a very capable processor when paired with a current graphics card.

I had not heard that was confirmed (only rumors) at the time the video was made. It is great for a long term upgrade and life cycle of the R11. I personally think that the average person would benefit far more from a GPU upgrade than from a 10th to 11th gen CPU; though we will see once they are actually seen in the wild.

The maximum length for the GPU is 10.5 inches. This pretty much rules out all of the 3 fan GPU variants. Funny enough, the launch versions of the AMD 6800 and 6800XT are 10.5 inches long. The founders edition of the 3080 is also 10.5 inches long. There does not seem to exist (yet, who knows if ever?) an off the shelf 3090 that could fit in the R11.

@@SammyTheDitchDoctor I did a little bit of research on this, and I found that Gigabyte does in fact make an SFF friendly blower style 3090 that measures in right at 10.51 inches long; so yeah, I was wrong about there not being a 3090 on market that would fit. I looks remarkedly like the PNY 2070RTX blower card that is my own R11. Dell does not explicitly mention that they 3090 uses the AIO cooler, so they could very well be using the Gigabyte model. I've posted a link to the Gigabyte card via their website. Dell is claiming that they use a custom solution for whatever that is worth. Here is also what Dell pointed me to (a link on their website) when I emailed them asking this question; Dell is notoriously tight lipped about their vendor partnerships: "The Alienware Aurora now offers optional custom graphics designs based on NVIDIA’s 2nd Gen RTX architecture. These custom designs are made with extensive thermals and an innovative airflow pattern engineered to prioritize graphics performance while complementing the Aurora chassis airflow as well. These custom graphics card designs, included in both NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 3080 and 3090 graphics, are built with space efficiency with a max length of just 267mm that covers a 2.5x slots and offers a dual 6-pin/8-pin PCI-Express power connectors. All of these choices have been made to create efficiency with uncompromised gaming performance." www.gigabyte.com/Graphics-Card/GV-N3090TURBO-24GD#kf

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but those temps aren’t accurate. I have a Alienware R11 with the i7 10700F/RTX 2070 Super and mine runs at 80-83 degrees whilst gaming. What you need to do is have AWCC running in the background and then Alt+Tab over while the game is amidst action to get a more accurate temp. The temperature drops when the game is at a slower pace because there isn’t as much stress on the components.

You can remove the Intel CPU from the MOBO. I myself have unseated the heatsink and reapplied / upgraded the thermal paste. The CPU is not soldered to the mainboard; that is something you typically only see in laptops and SOC (system on a chip) style systems. The downside of Intel CPUs is that Intel loves to change the socket of the CPU from generation to generation (ie: year to year typically). This means that you are stuck with whatever generation of CPU you have as an upgrade path. Compared to AMD who typically keeps the same sockets for a few years. For example, an AMD 3600X ZEN 2 could easily be upgraded to a 5600X ZEN 3 with the same MOBO (though you might lose out on some new features like upgraded PCI-e lanes or memory support due to the old MOBO not supporting them), while a 10th gen Intel CPU could only be upgraded to another 10th gen Intel CPU.
