The greatest achievement of this movie is that there is no malice in it. It would have been so easy to make an ugly mockery of SciFi fans or focus on some of the uglier aspects of the original Star Trek cast, but they avoided all of that and turned it into a genuine homage.

The deal with Jason's shirtlessness is that in the original Star Trek (which I'm sure you'll discover as you watch it), more often than not, when Captain Kirk got into a fight or a very strenuous physical situation, his shirt would inevitably develop rips or tears or even end up torn off altogether. He usually ended up showing some skin, in other words. Thus Dane's snark, "I see you managed to get your shirt off," a line that every Trekkie in the audience understood. :D

This movie is a hilarious but honest paean to the science fiction fan community (or at least as it was at the time). Sigourney practically begged the director to cast her in the part, because it would be completely "against type" and being a female sci-fi icon, she understood best how the role should be lampooned. Originally they didn't want to hire any sci-fi veterans, but fortunately (after a change of directors) her tenaciousness won out.

Classic "Hero's Journey" when done right never fails to make an enjoyable story. Fun fact: The bridge set for the "real" Protector was built on an enormous gymbal with hydraulic rams that could slam it up, down, side to side (round and round, dip it now) in any direction using a joystick that the director used. So there was no camera shake to simulate all those missile and mine hits, and all the actors are really trying to hold on to a set that's shifting, bucking and slamming around underneath them.

You had to know the show was good if for nothing else, the awesome Sigourney Weaver signed on to play the "Busty Bimbo" of the show. Just the fact that she played that role made this movie awesome. I love it when an actor doesn't take themselves too seriously and can make fun of themselves. And I do believe that when we get kidnapped by aliens, it's going to be the genuine, true Star Trek fans who will save the day. ... I was rolling in the aisles. And Tim Allen had that Shatner-esque swagger down pat. And I roared when the shirt came off, and Sigourney rolls her eyes and says, "There goes that shirt again." ... How often did we hear that on the set?” - George Takei “I thought it was very funny, and I thought the audience that they portrayed was totally real, but the actors that they were pretending to be were totally unrecognizable. Certainly I don't know what Tim Allen was doing. He seemed to be the head of a group of actors, and for the life of me I was trying to understand who he was imitating. The only one I recognized was the girl playing Nichelle Nichols.” - William Shatner

Love this movie. Originally, they filmed the movie to be a more adult comedy but in post-production the studio wanted to push for a PG rating to pull in the family crowds. You can still see the adult elements like Sigourney's cleavage and Tim Allen's drinking. They edited out some language like when they are approaching the Chompers and Sigourney says "Screw That!" but you can obviously see her lips saying "Fuck That!" and they took out Tony Shalhoubs stoner plot line.(he's the mechanic character) He played the character as a stoner which explains why he was so chill and laid back for most of the movie and always looking for snacks like when he was at the vending machine when everyone got teleported before him. He got all nervous using the teleporter later cause he ran out. LOL. Unfortunately the studio didn't let them keep any explicit reference to pot.

Also, yeah, it may be best to start with Star Trek II instead of the first movie. I like the first movie but it is very slow paced, it's not for everyone. The plot of the first movie can also.he summed up in one paragraph and that's all you need going into Star Trek II.
