I don't think the daylight is the issue. To me it's the way it moves and how it's skin reflects the light, those two things don't at all help it in this scene. But being in daylight to me isn't an issue because we can't expect them to never come out in day

They turned the xeno from an elegant predator that knew how to carefully use its environment to its advantage to a rampaging beast that just attacks blindly. I would have liked more of a horror film much better, Just like in 79'! But it wasn't, it was a confused muddled mess of a movie - More Big Chap would have been better, in the original Giger design, rather than mostly seeing those protomorphs - Or I'd have rathered not seeing the original alien at all and concentrate on the protomorphs. It didn't make sense that the Big Chap version of the Alien would come so soon after something literally called a 'protomorph' as in prototype alien... For me, this Xenomorph acts far too aggressively. ...Let me explain. Typically, as seen in any of the first four movies, (yes, even Resurrection), and particularly in Alien: Isolation, a lone Xenomorph would act more cautiously, killing when it could but not taking chances. It ambushed where possible and retreated to try again if caught with something that could hurt it. The point is, the Xenomorph isn't _just_ some aimless killing machine, it's an intelligent creature that puts survival above all else, it just so happens that it sees the extinction of all other species as being the key to its own survival. But again, it didn't so aggressively pursue this line with reckless abandon; it did it with efficiency, stealth, hit-and-run tactics, it did it in a way that didn't so obviously run itself head first into trouble or a potential trap. Each time in the movies, when there wasn't sufficient firepower, the Alien had to be blindsided by a trap or something way out of left field in order to simply get rid of the fucker. Here, it was way to obvious, it let itself get caught on netting, it let itself be trapped, even if only momentarily, in the cabin of a large vehicle. This isn't the behaviour of a creature that wants to put survival first, it's the behaviour of a mindless killing machine that doesn't care about the consequences of its actions. And, for me, that's not what the Xenomorphs are. I'm not saying this because others are defending the Xenomorph as shown here, a lot of people aren't, I'm just voicing my opinion on what this version of the creature is like to me.

But at the same time, it makes sense. The Xenomorph in this movie is a Protomorph, aka the very first Xenomorph looking experiment by David. After this, possibly a long time after, the Drone in the first movie was created. It should make sense that this thing is less intelligent and strategic, seeing as it’s the first model of the common Xenomorph. David had more experimenting to do before Xenomorphs had that high intelligence.

@@superawesomezebra3857 That's what I was going to say, this Xenomorph is the first of its kind, all species evolve over time, but this creature hasn't had the time, it has just been born with one intention: Kill. There is no survival. There is no loyalty to a hive or queen. Future Xenomorphs became more cunning, but less dangerous than this one, as the goal of cacooning victims so they can be impregnated by the eggs is more important to them, but the first Xenomorph exists for the hunt, that's all it knows.

At the same time it also seems um...kinda invincible? I mean, by the first alien movie the lone drone can be hurt it seems. The xenomorph in this just seems to kind of shrug off bullets and fire and everything else they throw at it. While Covenant has many and I mean many plot holes (and if you forget the plot is just plain ridiculous), the film is actually not bad. The xenomorph steals the show. Extremely well done. I understand why some people are upset that the alien is CGI rather than a costume or puppet, but there's only so much you can do with a person in a suit. Look how that thing moves. It's like a freakin' spider. Look at its proportions. Huge yet skeletal. Humans can't move like that and they don't look like that. The alien looks, well, *alien* in this film. The tubes bending at 1:07 was a nice touch as well. If you go frame by frame you see them actually bending so the alien can move down the ladder. I thought it was a neat touch. Makes more sense the tubes would be malleable. Explains how those suckers always in the vents! All in all, I agree that I would have loved to see more on Shaw and Daniel and exactly what happened between them and the engineers and this film is very lackluster in that regard but what it lacked in story, it made up with that magnificent xeno design (the neomorphs were super cool as well imo).

I loved both Prometheus and Alien Covenant. I was disappointed because Noomi Rapace didn't reprise her role as Shaw (at least not as expected) and I hope to know why someday, but Katherine Waterston's Daniels was great, she is super cute and looks awesome holding a rifle. Michael Fassbender's performance was superb as usual. The visuals are amazing, the score by Jed Kurzel is my favorite from all Alien movies, it was dark, creepy, bizarre, violent, mystical, cyberpunk, etc. everything you would expect from Ridley Scott, my favorite director. Hope they're going to make the sequel with the same cast and Ridley directing again soon.

2 things 1. There are a few scenes you missed, but if it's for copyright, I'll let it slip 2. I found interesting aspects of the xeno that equate it closer to the ones everyone "loved", semi-developed shoulders, using its tail (both can't exactly be seen easily, but the xeno used its tail to gain leverage when climbing over the cockpit), and even holding an upright stance and walking BIPEDALLY, though only for a few seconds each shot Also 2:22 *HEEERE'S MORPHY!*

The only times the Xeno looks ACTUALLY believable and not from a fully CG movie is in 1:50 until the end. Proves only one thing; The Xeno should stay in it's traditional spot, where it belongs: In the dark. It gives the illusion that the CG actually looks real.

  • @grarghov1

yes, because the 1:50 scene (which strangely matches your opinions as I also consider the "alienest" scene in the franchise after the original Alien) intentionally set up a Nostromo-like mood, even the Xeno does not behave like a fucking pokemon, but strolls menacingly on his hind legs in the dark, just like in the first movie :)

I think that the Alien was awesome, it gave it movement than any other movie before it, all of the other movies the aliens were usually just standing still and the use of trick photography made it seem like it was moving. Don't get me wrong, I love the original.. I also love the hard work and dedication that it takes to wear the suit constantly and for all of the directors to try to make a movie based around it with such little movement that they can do.. Well done! But that doesn't mean that we can't move on from that. This movie shows that the Alien CAN be animated well! For all of those people who say that it doesn't look real enough than I agree with you.. It doesn't look like the sweat is actually coming out of it's mouth.. but that's because it isn't real. Let your imagination take over to the possibilities now.. I mean think about it, who here has played the games? Have you ever once gone "Oh this Alien doesn't look real enough!" No, because it's a game and it isn't real. Everyone can have their opinion. If your comments are full of bagging other people out because of that.. Then you should just try to comment more on the movie than what other people think.

My personal biggest complaint about this movie is the abundance of really long and boring talking scenes with characters I don't care about. In the first movie I didn't mind when the characters were having a scene together because I actually liked and cared more about them. Alien Covenant, not so much. They did manage to make up for that though with the Xeno. He looks so vicious and badass and although some of the cgi isn't all that great when the Xeno is on screen he looks incredible. With the cgi they were able to make him do so much more slithering, crawling, jumping, running on all fours and it looks so awesome. The way they added the point of view of the alien is also a really nice touch.

  • @jaelie8398

Great way to put it. My personal biggest complaint is the prequels are so much more focused on the action than the originals. It's gotten to the point it's nothing but fight scenes, wheras the originals (and more especially the first movie) the alien was barely there because the rest of the time is devoted to character development. I think Alien is a perfect example of "less is more". The anticipation of the villain is scarier than the presence of the villian. Jurrasic Park has gone in the same direction.

Also we have to remember these are NOT The Xeno's we know....not yet. They dont have there queen yet. Meaning no Hivemind, meaning no inherited Memories/Knowledge. These are what Xenos are without there hivemind monsters that just kill for no reason except to eat. Compare these Xeno's to Big Chap in Alien. Big Chap is quiet stealthy and causious. Compared to the Proto Xenos seen in Covanant where they literally go gun ho into danger.

My theory for this “Protomorph” is that it was the first ever creation of a Xenomorph, David saw it as the perfect organism, and so for that he continued creating these Protomorphs, making a few changes and upgrades of it, eventually leading to the Xenomorph that we all know.

  • @Jamesfoster48

@Helios Megistos I Disagree, I know it's controversial but I can see and like the way Scott is tying up the Alien. It's all to do with the mechanical elements of the original Xenomorph, where would they come from?. The fact that David is trying to create the perfect living organism explains it perfectly. He first creates the Protomorph which is very close to the perfect organism however it's limited by its organic muscle structure. So he comes up with the idea of like him they are effectively enhanced by robotic elements and his vast knowledge DNA manipulating could give him the ability to make cells grown in a machine-like fashion. It also rounds the loop of nicely that the alien was ultimately by extension a human creation. I personally like this element to the story cannon after I thought about it for a while, though it's just my opinion.

@@JamesGames101 Ok. Here's my point. Movies use CGI when something cannot be done with practical effects. For example, when the Aliens in Covenant are running on fours, how dafuq can you shoot those scenes with practical effects? I didn't know a guy in a rubber suit can run on fours really fast? 😂 Are you trying to sound as dumb as possible? Another example, when the Alien pounces on a guy and tears him to pieces, how dafuq can you shoot dat scene with practical effects? If the Aliens in Covenant are guys in rubber suits in every scene, the Aliens would move slow and too human like. Ridley wanted the Aliens to be fast and aggressive. Has that ever occurred to you? 😂 If you look at the Aliens in the first 2 old films, they move slow, they either move like humans or robots. That would be awkward in a 2017 film with a $97 million budget. Literally every theatrical movie in the last 10 years uses CGI, even comedy, drama, and other movies you would never expect to use CGI has CGI. Get dafuq over it. The CGI in this movie is not bad. Name 3 movies that have better CGI than this movie. Take your time. You got all day.

@@pandaath Not saying CGI can't work for all of these scenes, nor did I call the CGI bad. My primary point is that, to me at least, it doesn't feel like a good Alien film. Comparing the action set-pieces in this film to Aliens for example, the Aliens actually feel creepy whilst keeping the suspense and horror, with this film it feels like just a straight up action film with Aliens. If other people like you like that then great, i'm glad, it just doesn't appeal to me. In regards to CGI, I don't have an issue with CGI, more unnecessary CGI, it felt like there could have at least been a few more practical effects to me

Showing so much of the alien was bad idea to start with but to do it with CGI like that, there's no tension at all. Why not keep the xenomorph in the shadows and make it scary instead? The action itself is pretty good but I don't understand why they gave the Alien so much exposure. Less is more. Maybe the ship pick up sequence would have been better during a night setting?

No I don't because in Aliens they handled the queen in such a way that the tension was kept intact, even though the queen got decent screen time. I don't think they managed to bring that same tension in Alien Covenant with the xenomorph scenes. I think a single xenomorph is probably more suited to being kept in the shadows as opposed to a queen.

They got the behavior of the Xenomorph all wrong. They turned it into some mad dog that runs and jumps all over the place to kill it's victims out of pure rage of craziness. In the original Alien, the creature stalks it's victims slowly and silently, never knowing where it hides. It relishes it's kill but takes it's time to do it, like a psychopath slowly killing it's victim, enjoying the process. That's what made the xenomorph so frightening.
