She used the term "occupation of Palestine" which is a controversial way of looking at the origin and development of the situation. It's a perspective that is pretty matter of fact but is controversial nonetheless due to the implication of "occupation". I don't believe she realized this as she said it, and it's clear she took a moment to think on the best way to navigate her use of the term in the least inflammatory way possible. Hence the "I think".

What I wanted to know from AOC is why does "progressive" mean reversion to racial and ethnic tribalism and division? The "progressives" today push power and privledge to minority groups through imposition of racist policies/sexist policies in order to get equality of outcome. AOC is not progressive relative to longer term human history in that the worse regimes and ideologies of the past and in the current have a common ideological collectivist identity based value system versus the modern day west which focuses on the individual. By that comparison AOC is actually is regressive. I don't think she should be allowed to get away with calling herself a progressive.

Instead, she had to ad lib for 15+ minutes, which shed a bit too much light on her inexperience and complete lack of economic understanding. It's all well and good to wish for all sorts of wonderful things like free monthly income and free college education. We already have 50% of taxpayers not contributing to that pie - we'd need more, not fewer people paying taxes to pay for all the free stuff. Someone sit her down and explain how our economy works. I completely agree with her 100% on her opening statement. In America there should be no one below poverty level, and all Americans of all backgrounds, genders, ages, ethnicities, etc should have their basic needs met. America is a powerful nation, there should be no one homeless, hungry, uneducated, or in debt due to medical bills. Only caring about profits at any cost is sick. I don't think socialism for the USA is the answer, however there should be a limit on capitalism, but the rich powers that be don't want to change that, why would they spit in the wind for themselves. But it's obvious that the current system does not work. America needs to evolve. The old times are just ... old.

She’s not smart enough to realise it yet. But she’s actually a stakeholder capitalist. She just has a beef with shareholder capitalism and doesn’t understand the difference. If you want the upliftment of people it cannot be achieved via socialism. Never has never will. But it can be achieved through free markets. What she really wants is that benefit to be shared amongst stakeholders including workers. She’ll figure it one day. But it’ll likely be in decades and too late.

I love this program. I had not seen this episode before. Thanks for posting and thanks to Margaret Hoover and the team at Firing Line for their great work in developing stimulating and thought-provoking content. Dems...you could do better in your branding. Stop handing pundits on the right all that red meat. Try “Progressive Capitalism” instead of anything with the term “socialism” in it! Capitalism isn’t going away in America. But it can progress so everyone (not just the CEO’s and the owners) can partake in the rewards.

@Bobby Rubarb Thoughtful perspective. Perhaps crafted or advertised with the intent of helping the middle and lower income folks, I don’t know that it materialized that way. It’s been my observation (and these are just my thoughts) that the trade conflicts cost American jobs. The tax cut didn’t create new jobs, they only made the wealthy wealthier. And the real economy in this country (not just the Wall Street indices) is not well. As for the Dow and those indices that would say otherwise, we must remember that their status (while currently out of step with the economic realities of the American consumer) are cyclical and really only “truly” matter for those with investment portfolios...more than half of American have no holdings in those forms (by 401k or otherwise) because they are working multiple low paying jobs (none of which are full time enough to offer the benefit) just to pay the rent. Certainly they don’t have enough remaining after paying the bills to invest on their own. A sizable and growing portion of our nation is living hand to mouth with zero wiggle room. The pandemic has made this more evident than ever. What I mean by progressive capitalism is an appropriate re-leveling of the table that’s been tilted towards the rich for the better part of 40 years care of Reaganomics and trickle-down theory. Take a look at income inequality and buying power over that same period and the story is telling. The rich should love socialism and re-distribution of wealth...they’ve been the primary beneficiaries for the better part of a half a century of that economic model of “give to the rich and they’ll pass things down to everyone else.” It doesn’t turn out that they do. Leveling that a bit is what I mean by progressive capitalism. With more balanced taxation, Investments in new energy forms, investments in infrastructure, investments in science, education, training and real support for the American worker, and 21st century jobs for a workforce that can...dare I say it...truly make America great again. Nobody’s for the demolition of capitalism or advocating for Soviet-like socialism...even though folks are branding it that way for political motives (and exactly why Dems need to stop giving the GOP red meat by using the term!). Capitalism built this country. But like everything, it needs to be kept in check. There’s a lot of work to do in this country and there’s plenty to go around for everyone. But the system is out of whack...tilted way more towards owners than the do-ers and builders. It’s been Socialism for the rich, if you will, and the brutal operating end of capitalism for the rest of us. We need a more balanced brand of capitalism. A capitalism for progress, or “Progressive Capitalism.” Just my two-cents.

@Bobby Rubarb well put. I guess it’s a fair question you ask by what “progressive” means in this context. I see what you mean by way of your examples like Zuckerberg...I’d add Bezos and Musk to that list. Same thing...that needs the same checking I mentioned. My definition of “progressive” in this context really is one that’s more balanced and ethical than maximum profits at all costs. And only for the few. There’s a moral obligation here to contribute to the system that makes it possible for them and their companies. Not just shareholders, but stakeholders including employees and the nation writ large. If not, the golden goose of American capitalism and all the good it can do will continue to be gutted. BTW...thank you. This has been a civil and thoughtful exchange of thoughts and ideas. It’s certain that we won’t agree on it all, but at least we’re thinking! And there are definitely places where we’re saying the same thing...only a little differently. I truly respect you for your thoughts and for taking the time to write them down and exchange them. That’s an awesome thing. Hopefully someone will read this stuff and note that we’re modeling civil democratic behavior. 😊

There is really no way to have income equality that is freely achieved. There are always going to be people who want more, work harder, give less than others. Having the freedom to achieve is far different from having the right to be dependent. I have been poor most of my life. I may think people like Gates and Zuckerberg and Buffet have far more than they need, but I would not want someone forcing them to give what they have to me.

  • @jamesfrangione8448

@@deucefloyd9858 you’re correct, sadly there is no perfect world in this. And we’d be naive to think there is one. But pragmatically, I think we can do a lot better than we are doing today. In my comments here in this thread, I’m not suggesting they “give” you or anybody else anything. But systemic issues where they pay no corporate taxes (and little to no personal tax) and freely exploit American infrastructure, military might and protections, and America’s workforce must be addressed. If it “gives” the middle class and lower income American worker anything, it’s a fair shot at success and upward mobility, a livable wage, and a sense of security that comes from knowing they will be able to meet their own basic needs (in a Maslow hierarchy sense). Right now, as I see it, it’s rigged for the wealthy...whether they be Republicans or elitist Democrats. It’s not really about a party, it’s about the dangers that loom when there isn’t a strong middle class. Historically, it’s class struggles that produce civil wars and revolutions. Sadly, it can happen here, too. Thank you for your thoughts on this, and for helping to keep a civil public discourse going. We need that now more than ever, and I truly do appreciate your thoughts and perspectives here. It matters. Keep the faith!

She got on shaky ground with her "occupation of Palestine" comment, since there is no official state of Palestine, just Palestinian territories inside Israel. Her comments about economics were almost all incorrect. Wages continued to rise over time and economic prosperity, on the whole, was never greater across economic classes in America than it was at the time of this discussion. Most working class people were not working 2 or more jobs or 60-80 hour weeks. These are all myths used effectively by many federal Democratic politicians during political campaigns. Our mostly private economy continues to raise people out of poverty better than any other economic system despite the advent of several major industrial complexes having been taken over by government-corporate hybrids (corporatism) including defense, energy, agriculture, transportation, health care, and education. Other forms of cronyism plague several other major markets within our economy as well. One can see that much of our economy is not governed by capitalism if one accounts for all the parts that are controlled by corporatism, cronyism and directly by government. AOC seems like a reasonably intelligent person but she lacked (and still lacks) comprehensive knowledge pertaining to the areas of society she has advocated changing the most including the environment, the economy and foreign policy.

I am always astounded that someone who grew up in the finance capitol of the world, NY, surrounded by all the wealth that capitalism has to offer and wears shoes that probably cost more than I as an Eastern European earn in a month says that the system is evil and introducing a Soviet-esque centrally planned economy would benefit the "working masses". It reminds me of how former French Fieldmarshal Jean Bernadotte didn't allow people to see him shirtless once he became King of Sweden cause he had a tattoo from the days of the revolution saying "death to kings"...

@Google Sucks Ass I am not misrepresenting her views. She thinks it'd be best if the government, meaning her and her cronies, would be able to dictate how business, big or small, should operate. That is basically a centralized economy. She also thinks that the government, again meaning her and people like her, should have control over every aspect of a citizens life at their leisure. She wants to tell you what means of transportation you can use, irrespespective of the costs (#suckstobeyou), what you may eat and what worldview your child is allowed to have. That is what socialists have always done, be it German national socialists or Soviet international socialists. In addition, she calls women "menstruating persons", which clearly shows she is off her meds...
