In 1985, Alexander O'Neal released his self-titled debut album under the production of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. It included three singles that reached the Top 20 of the R&B Singles Chart. The same year, he also scored his first R&B Top 10 single with "Saturday Love", a duet with Cherrelle from her High Priority album. The song "Saturday Love" peaked at No. 2 and also reached the Top 10 of the UK Singles Chart, peaking at No. 6.
In 1987, Alexander O'Neal released the album titled Hearsay, which yielded the No. 25 pop and the number-one R&B single "Fake". The song also peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard dance chart. The follow-up single, "Criticize", peaked at No. 4 on the R&B chart and No. 70 on the pop chart. The third single, "Never Knew Love Like This", another duet with Cherrelle, peaked at No. 2 on the R&B chart and No. 28 on the pop chart. By this time, Alexander O'Neal was enjoying greater success in the UK than he was in his native US. Hearsay peaked at No. 4 on the UK Albums Chart, eventually certifying as triple platinum, and spawning seven charting singles. The highest of these, "Criticize", peaked at No. 4 on the UK Singles Chart. It was also featured on 2008 video game Grand Theft Auto IV. "Fake" became a UK Top 40 hit twice, first in 1987 followed by a remix ("Fake '88") in 1988. The "Hit Mix" (a megamix of Alexander O'Neal's greatest hits to date) reached the UK Top 20 in December 1989. O'Neal also recorded a Christmas album, My Gift to You, which was released in December 1988.
In 1991, Alexander O'Neal released his fourth album, All True Man. The album's title-track reached No. 5 on the R&B chart and No. 45 on the pop chart. The album was another success in the UK, peaking at No. 2, though sales did not reach the levels of his previous album. In 1992, his first greatest hits album, This Thing Called Love: The Greatest Hits of Alexander O'Neal, became another Top 5 success in the UK.
In 1993, Alexander O'Neal's final album with the Tabu label, Love Makes No Sense, was released. This was the first album made without production from Jam and Lewis. Although it reached the UK Top 20 and two singles from the album reached the UK Top 40, sales were not as strong as his earlier releases. After leaving Tabu Alexander O'Neal signed for Motown but no singles or albums were released. In 1995, another greatest hits compilation, The Best of Alexander O'Neal, was released. A year later the compilation was re-released with three added tracks from O'Neal's short period with Motown.
In 1996, Alexander O'Neal's first album with One World Records, Lovers Again, was released. The album did not chart in the UK, though the single "Let's Get Together" reached the UK Top 40. In 2001, he released an album on Eagle Records, Saga of a Married Man. The album was produced by former Prince drummer, Bobby Z. In 2005, he recorded his first live album, Alexander O'Neal Live at Hammersmith Apollo, featuring songs from throughout his career.

He has been on this journey for almost 40 years. The miracle is that the man is still alive. Almost every artist who has had a problem with drugs have died in their 50's or younger. Alex will be 66 years old this year!

This brought me to tears. THERE ARE STILL PEOPLE THAT LOVE YOU ALEX! It’s ok to struggle that will NEVER take away the music and talent that you have shared with the world. It’s 2019 and “Hearsay” is still on my playlist. “Fake” is even more prevalent today than it was in the damn 80s!! Thank you for posting this thank you for finding Alex!

@@Foxtrot1967 absolutely I've lived it. Fortunately in my case it wasn't drugs but sugar in a form of fizzy drinks. People laugh when I say sugar because very few realize how addictive and dangerous it really is

because Mr. Oneal sang and was a better than The tyme! every last srar tryed drugs. This industry is very hard on us. At least he has the guts to admit that hes adrug addict. You have a sweet spirt and i love your music honey ! We all fall down but we get up! God hears you and hes gonna fix it. Yall need to take a minute and look at yourself. Not so. I worked with Alex on one of the 1st hearsay tours, 1987.. while rehearsing in Minneapolis, he took us over to flytyme studios where we met Jam, Lewis & the Time. All perfect gentlemen! Alex is not one to hold onto negativity. Very generous! I met him when he came to a niteclub I was singing at in Toronto Canada. As soon as I left the stage, he asked me to join his table n then go on tour with him. We sat and sipped champagne that evening. A beautiful man!

When he said “you don’t care about me.” God, I just want to hug him and thank him. Lord knows we only have a dozen R&B musical legends remaining.

i don"t care what they say about him I believe him when he says he would hurt anyone and he is so right they don't know him or care about him . My cousin was healed from a serious crack addition when she fell down on her knees and cried out to God. She tells her testimony to anybody who will listen. THANK YOU for giving us great music and you are wrong......there are some people who really care about you even though we don't know you personally. God bless you Mr. O'Neal.

Super incredible talent! I remember hearing "If You Were Here Tonight" for the first time at a club in '85 or so and being awestruck! And it's still one of the tracks that I admire dearly. Thank God for this talented brother...

I was a little girl listening to his music. When I was old enough to notice he had a drug problem, I've been praying for him ever since! My prayers go out to him. I love you Mr. Alexander O'Neal!
This man is a living legend and NO ONE could duplicate the sound of his voice. What he has experienced is called Life. So please don't judge him bc you sin differently than he did with drug abuse. Put some respect on our elders and the talent they have blessed the world with.

Will always love the songs by Alexander O’Neil I play them all they time. They are a part of my playlist. Hope he gets back to the way it use to be. Drugs were created todestroy,hope and pray you can have the willpower to stay away from that demon. You will have to be stronger than that demon.

Troubling. True. I don't know him, but I do care. He is a person. It is troubling to see a person who is not well. And if it was drugs that put you on this condition, I want to thank you for sharing your story. Maybe your story will help people who have not taken up drugs to stay off drugs.
