Alastair Brookshaw ("Into the Woods", "A Little Night Music", "Sweeney Todd") joins Alex Young ("Into the Woods", "Anyone Can Whistle", "Follies") for an evening celebrating the work of Stephen Sondheim and his contemporaries at Upstairs at the Gatehouse.
This two-nights only cabaret features songs performed by JORDAN BROATCH, ALASTAIR BROOKSHAW and DESMONDA CATHABEL, with support from this year's Finalists from The Stephen Sondheim Society Student Performer of the Year competition (which was won by Desmonda). Jade took home the third-place prize.

ABOUT ALEX YOUNG
Alex Young graduated from the Royal Academy of Music (PGDip) and King’s College London (BMus) and was the 2010 winner of The Stephen Sondheim Society Student Performer of the Year competition. She most recently played the Baker’s Wife in the Terry Gilliam/Leah Hausman production of "Into the Woods" at Theatre Royal Bath, and before this starred as Cora Hoover Hooper in the acclaimed revival of "Anyone Can Whistle" at the Southwark Playhouse, for which she received an Offie Award nomination for Best Lead Performance in a Musical.
Other theatre credits include: Amalia Balash in "She Loves Me" (Sheffield Crucible), Nellie Forbush in "South Pacific" (Chichester), Sarah Brown in "Guys and Dolls" (Sheffield Crucible), Poppy in "Standing at the Sky’s Edge" (Sheffield Crucible), Sally Smith in "Me and My Girl" (Chichester), Young Sally in "Follies" (National Theatre), Carrie Pipperidge in "Carousel" (ENO/Coliseum), Marge in "Promises, Promises" (Southwark Playhouse), Ellie May Chipley in "Show Boat" (New London Theatre and Sheffield Crucible) and Erma in "Anything Goes" (Sheffield and UK tour). Alex also played the role of Brutus in "Coriolanus" at the Crucible.
With writing partner Kate Marlais, Alex is currently developing the musicals "Fucked in Marrakech", "If I Am Real" and "Ghosted". Their musical "Here" won the S&S Award in 2015, and in 2019 they were finalist in the Composium classical song competition.
Alex will be returning to the Crucible in December this year for another run of "Standing at the Sky’s Edge", prior to its transfer to the Olivier at the National Theatre in February 2023.
ABOUT ALASTAIR
Alastair Brookshaw most recently appeared as the Baker in Northern Ireland Opera’s critically acclaimed production of "Into the Woods". Other recent theatre includes Mike Connor in "High Society"; Amos Hart in "Chicago"; Stuart Gellman in the West End revival of "Caroline or Change"; Frederik Egerman in the Watermill Theatre’s revival of "A Little Night Music"; Sipos in "She Loves Me" at the Menier Chocolate Factory; the English National Opera’s 2015 production of "Sweeney Todd"; Jacobowsky in "The Grand Tour" (for which he received an Off West End Award Nomination for Best Actor), and Volodya in "Bed and Sofa", both at the Finborough Theatre; Oscar Wilde in "De Profundis" at the Leicester Square Theatre; Leo Frank in "Parade" at the Southwark Playhouse; the ‘Young Nazi’ in Rufus Norris’ revival of "Cabaret"; and Frederick in "The Pirates of Penzance" at the Minack Theatre. He also appeared in the West End production of "Blood Brothers" and "Shoes" at Sadler’s Wells. His film credits include "Eurovision: The Story of Fire Saga".
As a singer, Alastair can be heard in numerous cast recordings, as well as countless film soundtracks, including "West Side Story 50th Anniversary Recording", "Cabaret 2006 London Cast Recording", "Rogers and Hammerstein at the Movies" (with the John Wilson Orchestra), "Captain America: The First Avenger", and "Mamma Mia! The Movie".
Alastair is also in high demand as a singing teacher, teaching from his studio in Loughton. He has lectured on singing technique, and given masterclasses, for the Association of Teachers of Singing (AOTOS), Vocal Boot Camp and at Cambridge University.
