ALEX SARR SCOUTING REPORT | 2024 NBA Draft | Perth Wildcats | France

Спорт

Alex Sarr is the potential number one pick in the 2024 #NBA Draft. The #France big can be a two-way force, and he has shown as much in the #NBL with the Perth Wildcats, but his game is also rawer than indicated.

  • @FloorandCeiling

    I can see the Mobley flashes for sure. He's sort of one of the best case outcomes for Sarr, especially with how high he'll probably go in the draft. The reason why I prefer Mobley to Jabari is largely because of the shooting. Jabari was 42% from three on almost 200 attempts in college and also a really willing midrange shooter. Mobley was around 30% from three, similar to Sarr, on low volume but with some touch/projection. Then, his defensive potential just oozed which, again, is very much like Sarr. Thanks for watching 🙏

    Shooting 57% from the FT is really bad. if he doesn't show more offensive/shooting upside, then he doesn't seem like a #1 overall pick type of player with star potential

  • @FloorandCeiling

    Thanks for watching! Like I mentioned in the video, I think the hype with his shooting needs to be tempered still. Sarr can make open threes, but he's shooting below 30% as of this weekend from three on relatively low volume. His other shooting indicators also aren't amazing. That doesn't mean that he won't be a good or capable shooter down the line. But comparing him to Jaren Jackson Jr, for instance, part of his NBA role immediately was the fact that he could truly space the floor (39.6% on almost 100 attempted threes in college, then 35.9% as an NBA rookie followed by a monster 39.4% on 6.5 attempts per game as a sophomore). Sarr isn't there at all yet, so I think his role is relatively simple early on. He can be effective there for sure, but he's also reliant on good service for that - and he hasn't shown *that much* to me as a roller. Perth uses Keanu Pinder, their other center, as a roll man much more often than Sarr because he prefers to pop or just isn't that physical getting downhill.

    @@FloorandCeiling I hope he falls enough that the Thunder can make a move to draft him in the mid lottery. They need another good mobile big man who offers rim protection, although the lack of rebounding is a bit troubling. His flashes as a passer and his willingness to reposition without the ball are intriguing and would fit with how they run their offense. I am not sure if his three point shooting will develop, but he would be a good pick and roll partner or even pick and pop from midrange (where his shot looks a lot more reliable) and he would also work well in the dunker spot with SGA, who always sucks in multiple defenders whenever he drives. Interestingly, Alex's older brother, Olivier Sarr, has been a two-way player with the Thunder for a couple of years now.

    if Sarr get drafted as No 1, I think he will have a very high chance to be a bust. I watched a live game in Sydney last year, when his Perth Wildcats against Sydney Kings. Sarr was a non-factor throughout the entire game. I'm OK if he can't make his shots, but I can't feel his presence on the court throughout the entire game, and that's really concerning for a potential No 1. Bust target = Alex Sarr

  • @FloorandCeiling

    I can understand your concerns. Personally, I don't have Sarr as my no. 1 prospect and I'm not sure he'll end up in my top 5. I like his defensive potential, but I'm not sure it's otherworldly (like say, Chet Holmgren or Evan Mobley) and I'm cold on him offensively. I don't think his handle is functional enough to translate to the NBA or ever be a go-to for a team, I think his jumper is rockier than is being let on (really poor FT% and untrustworthy 3P% on low volume), and he's a poor rebounder who lacks physicality on the inside while not being a top tier explosive athlete. If the Wizards get one of the first picks (which has a high chance of happening), I can get behind them drafting Sarr that high - as in, top 3-5 - since they need a big, but other teams have more urgent priorities.

    I think he's a tier below Chet or Mobley, but his defense isn't just a case of being tall and long. Sarr is genuinely really mobile, he covers tons of ground with his strides, and he's impactful in a pro league at 18/19. I think he's not as tough as the other two at the rim, but he could be as switchy as them or a Jaren Jackson Jr.

    The more I watch the video, the more dumbfounded I am!!!! We are talking about a player who is a good rim protector and has good defensive mobility. And that's it, he has no more. His shooting (from 2 or 3) is bad; his ball handling is mediocre; his moves near the rim are lousy; he's not even a good rebounder!!!! Of course his skills are inferior to Mobley's and similar to Lively's (#12 of the last draft). And the funny thing is that with all those flaws he can be the #1 pick in the draft if, for example, the Wizards have that pick. Incredible, because Sarr is not a player that an NBA franchise rebuild can be based on, he is someone who can help a team in a supporting role.

  • @FloorandCeiling

    @FloorandCeiling

    4 ай бұрын

    I have some concerns about Sarr as well, ultimately because I think that his floor might not be super high overall. He has to take some big leaps on offense in order to not remain relatively limited. In previous drafts, I believe he'd be considered more of a top 20 prospect than a top 5 name. Let's assume he ends up as a 4, not a 5, because of his limitations on the interior and lack of rebounding - is his defense *as valuable* at the 4, instead of as a center? Probably not. The same goes for his skillset on offense. Will Sarr ever be good enough at creating for himself in the half court to where an NBA team will see that as their most productive option at some point over the course of a game? Skill development will continue to happen with Sarr, but again, these are some big jumps he must take. If he ends up as a 4, then his three-point shooting must improve. Right now, it's below 30% on low volume. His FT% is also really low. So how much confidence is there in Sarr upping his attempts from three and, at the same time, eventually shooting 34-36% so that teams consider him a threat from the outside? If he's a non-shooting 4 who plays close to the rim, then his future team will need a shooting 5. Along with that, can he improve as a rebounder, especially on the defensive boards where he's currently averaging under 3 DREBs a game? If he's a 5, then he'll need to really grow in this area, and his team will also need to surround him with plenty of size+rebounding on the wings.

  • @FloorandCeiling

    He's not a surefire #1 pick like in years past, but I think he makes sense for the Hawks with an eye towards pairing him with Jalen Johnson in the front court. If Trae Young stays, he's a nice pick-and-roll partner for him in theory (though Sarr would have to become a more willing, physical roller and inside presence). If not, then he's still scalable enough next to whichever guard/wing comes in. If the Hawks end up angling towards a full rebuild, then the opportunity exists for Sarr to expand his game.

  • @FloorandCeiling

    @FloorandCeiling

    4 ай бұрын

    I can completely see why Sarr might remind you of Ayton. His motor can fluctuate, though I think he's definitely gotten better this season. Ayton was a better rebounder in college, but he also showed more than he did in the NBA in terms of shooting from deep (35 3PA as a freshman at Arizona) and playmaking for others (something I think Sarr also shows flashes in). My concerns with Sarr as a no. 1 pick are that he really needs service to be effective over an entire game, his handle is okay but I'm not sure it translates to the NBA, and all of his shooting flashes come on a very small sample size. Along with that, he's not a good rebounder at all right now. So if he has to play the 4 instead of the 5 in the NBA, I'm not sure he's good enough offensively to do that. I really like his defensive potential, but it's much more effective at the 5 than at the 4 imo.

    @@keach1983 Yeah, I don't think the Pistons or Spurs should prioritize Sarr. With San Antonio in particular, he's not an awful fit next to Wembanyama but it's already been established that the team is much better when Wemby is the only 5 on the floor. As for the Pistons, they don't need more non-shooters who depend on others for easy looks. I like Sarr in DC the most since they don't have a long-term answer at the 5 in the slightest. Portland isn't a bad destination (doesn't seem like Robert Williams will stay there), but I think they should wait till the 2025 draft for a big. Toronto might be cool too.
