Loved The Perfect Stitch. Bought it because I have my mother's 201 that she bought new in the early 1950s and just wanted to learn more about the machine she loved! What a great history on this machine. I had no idea! I know as a young couple, this machine purchase had to have been a sacrifice for my parents. I wish I knew it was such an amazing machine, even then, or I know I would have asked more about when she purchased it, and how they decided to splurge on this lovely machine. She made my school clothes, many of her own clothing, even made my wedding dress on it. It has signs of normal wear from years and years of loving use, but still stitches perfectly and I still love using it. I'm really grateful to have your books and videos so that I can properly care for it...

Just had my 201 serviced - it was a Hard Rubbish find! Love sewing with it, it is sooo quiet! Also love that I can adjust the speed so easily with the knee control.

Hi Alex, this video was very helpful for me as i had a 20K that was a dry as well I am in the morning before my cuppa. I did everything you said and probably over-oiled because it after you said it can't hurt. Ive been worried about this in the past. I was very interested to discover that the beautiful gears on this machine don't take grease and when i oiled the ones behind the little door at back it did start to move. BUT still very very stiff, so i thought there must be something else needed, so I studied your video again and still no luck. I wasn't going to give up! And ask hubby to help, and I thought perhaps the answer is under the the cap at the base on the left, (under the bobbin area). I took it off and there were 2 interlocikng gears as dry as. I oiled these and BINGO, it started to move and as its hand crank, was a bit slow, but now its going like the wind!!! Now to see if it will sew ok, wish me luck. And thanks for all your help.

Thank you very much for this very clear, well explained video - this is so helpful. I own 2 vintage sewing machines and I am about to receive a hand crank 201k from the UK in a few weeks (I live in France). I will try to service it by myself but may end up asking a professional if not successful. Thank you again for sharing your tips and your knowledge on YT! 😊

The "potted" machines is a rotary machine, correct? So if you have a vintage cast iron machine that has an old rotary machine that you're afraid to plug into a wall, what aftermarket NEW motor would you buy to replace the old gear-driven rotary motor? Thanks.

I use the spray tubes that come with some spray cans and put them in the end of the oil pot.

What about oiling to gears underneath?

I've found that the oil gravitates down to the gears via the central hook oil hole and the cotton peg top holes. However you can always put a drop on if they look or sound dry.
