Singer 201 Needle Bar Height Adjustment

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Once again, my viewers keep me honest! I promised a video on needle bar height adjustment a long time ago (September 26, 2020), and it seems I never got around to it. Well, Teresa kept me honest and here it is... Thanks Teresa!

    2 years ago I needed to use my mom's sewing machine with a 66 bobbin case which she always complained about and I couldn't figure out how to get the thread up through that hole then I started reading on these sites and I figured out how to do that. Since then I have bought and repaired and played and sewn with 13 different machines including chain stitchers I have everything from a 1950-66 to a r i c c a r from the 70s a brand new singer start and an old Minnesota flying shuttle machine I love them all thanks a lot I love to work on them and I like to make stuff

    I find it interesting that there are so many different types and ways to make a sewing machine because I used to work on motorcycles and still do to some extent and I thought if you can work on a motorcycle engine you can darn sure work on one of these thank you so much sir

    I seen more motorcycle basket cases in my life and I have seen sewing machine basket cases but nonetheless there are a lot of less parts, on a sewing machine especially when you get into the transmissions or timing chains I was surprised to see that one I first worked on had a timing belt underneath it

    Thank you! I think I finally got my Singer 1200 dialed in- had occasional skipped stitches although I believe had the tension about right. The other thing was the stitches weren't as perfectly straight as they should have been. Raised the needle bar just a skosh and so far no skips and the stitches are nice and straight! Appreciate seeing the 2 different types of bar clamps- i have the "other one" that is not in the adjusters manual I have so your explanation really helped. Again THANK YOU!

    The Ambassador Deluxe machines that I have seen advertised on line all appear to be a generic Japanese 15 class machine from the 1950's. They pretty much are an improvement of a standard Singer 15-30, with added features such as a more modern stitch length regulator (like the type used on the 15-88 through -125 Singers), and a dropping feed dog control on the top of the baseplate, and most also have a vastly improved retaining mechanism for the shuttle. While they share the look of some of the 15-88 through -125 Singer machines, they use a 1 o'clock 15 class bobbin case like the 15-30, instead of the 11 o'clock case of the other mentioned Singer models. The construction and operation is almost exactly the same as the Singer machines. Therefore, since they didn't reinvent the wheel, you can pretty much get all of the information you need by looking at manuals for a Singer 15-30.

    Another question. Do you time the hook first or set the needle bar height first? Thanks for you videos.

  • @BobFowlerWorkshop

    @BobFowlerWorkshop

    2 жыл бұрын

    Well, that's a great question. Different class machines have different priorities. Vibrating shuttle machines is timing first, needle bar height second. 15 class sewing machines, you would adjust the timing before you adjust needle bar height. With a 201 and most other 66 class machines, you can rough in the height, adjust the timing, then do a final height adjustment once timing is correct. Obviously, if the needle is hitting part of the mechanism because it's too low, you'll want to correct that clearance problem so it doesn't bend the needle before you can get the timing set correctly. It's always a bit of a dance, but once you get the hang of it, it's fun!

    What if you don’t have the timing marks? I have a model 66 without the timing gauge. Is it a measurable amount of travel I can measure along side the needle bar? Thanks for the video! Appreciate that -

  • @BobFowlerWorkshop

    @BobFowlerWorkshop

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes! On an old 66 without marks, you can raise the needle bar 3/32" (turning top of the balance wheel towards you) and be in the correct position to adjust needle bar height and timing. Once again, "about 1/16 inch" is the specification called for by Singer.

    Hi, I'm a bit late to the party here, but... I can't catch where in this you actually say by what means to adjust the needle bar height. Like, what screw do we need to loosen to adjust where the bar hits those marks?

  • @BobFowlerWorkshop

    Go to 5:53 in the video, you'll see how to access the screw for machines with the old style needle bar clamp. Having said that, some later 201's have the adjustment screw on the front of the needle bar clamp - just to make it easier.

    @@BobFowlerWorkshop Hi Bob, thanks so much for this video and the rest of your channel. You're helping me so much with the restoration of my 201! What is your recommendation for dealing with a stripped screw in the machine? Specifically, I have one of the "easy front-adjust" needle-bars you show in your demo, and the screw holding it in place is mildly stripped and stuck. the rubber-band trick hasn't worked, but I'm scared of trying anything more intensive... any tips?

    You are amazing - you can function that early and without coffee! I'd have only one eye open and my chin would be aiming for my chest. Anyway......I think I've missed something. I'm just finishing up cleaning my newly acquired 201-2 and am struggling a little with the timing. I've watched this video and the one on timing several times. What I don't get is at the end of this video you show the tightening of the needle bar screw inside the machine, right? But I didn't see you loosen anything prior to ensuring the needle bar gauge was in the correct position with the needle all the way down. That's what's got me confused. Please tell me what I missed. Thank you Bob!

  • @BobFowlerWorkshop

    @BobFowlerWorkshop

    2 жыл бұрын

    OK, I think I know why you're confused (at least I hope I do). The gauge is a slip fit over the top of the needle bar bushing. They can move on their own (vibration, transportation, etc), so it's best practice to check that the top line on the clamp and the top of the gauge line up when the needle bar is at bottom dead center of its stroke. If it were out of position, it's just a matter of giving it a gentle nudge to get back in position before checking/adjusting timing.
