ALCOBAÇA Silver Coast PORTUGAL Jardim do Amor, River Walk, Best Value Lunch, Menus, Pedro & Inês

We had a wonderful 3 week housesit in ALCOBAÇA over Christmas/New Year, so we had time to really explore this lovely town located in the Silver Coast region of Portugal.
We filmed this video in one day, walking around our favourite parts of Alcobaça. We'll show the beautiful pets in the next video, but wanted to give an overview of Alcobaça first.
In this video we show:
Amazing view from our housesit
Midday bells at the main praça
Menus for different restaurants in Alcobaça
Explain how Alcobaça received its name
Why Alcobaça is known as the place of love
Tell the tragic love story of Pedro and Ines
Visit the Jardim do Amor
Best value lunch menu in Alcobaça

I just got back to our stay in Caldas from Alcobaça and I agree with everything said in this video. It is a lovely town that is easy to walk. I went to the Tennis club and would like to share our experience. The menus existed just as they did back in December. The prato do dia was €4,80 and was a fish rice, pea soup, sides of rice/fries/salad, and a desert/fruit. We chose to pick from the menu on the wall to the right of the door. My wife had the mushroom omelet plate only for €4,30 which still came with the sides, just no desert/fruit. She added a orange Sumol for €1,35. I had a minced pork patty with an egg on top with all the sides and honeydew melon for €5,00. I had a 33cl Super Bock for €1,25. I typically drink beer when going out and my cheapest 33cl beer to date is €2,00 that I've gotten on three or four occasions. I was fairly blown away with a total bill of only €11,90. The quality was good, but not the best. I would have preferred a bit more salt on everything and some pepper in the soup, but for this price, I'm not going to complain very loudly. I bring this up so that expectations are set properly. The lady who took my order did not speak English, but was very gracious with my efforts at Portuguese. I wish I lived in Alcobaça as I would be a regular. The courts were busy, but not loud. We sat outside and had a lovely time. I cannot thank you enough for this suggestion as I would have never thought of this location. You are creating a catalog that is very valuable and you are appreciated. If I had not watched this video, I would have probably ended up having a tosta mista and a beer for twice the money. I want to also give a shout out to Pastelaria Estrela da Manhã at the market. We got to town early in the morning and each had a café com leite (coffee with milk) and a pastry for a total of €5,00. That's not special for Portugal, but I want to point out the value these little cafes provide and the staff were especially nice to us.

I love the way Mandy tells the tragic love story between King Pedro and Inês. I just added Alcobaça to my travel list. Thank you for sharing affordable places to eat and drink. Mandy and Lee started a trend on the ❤️ bench, KISS. Alcobaça looks like a small quiet town which I like. The weather doesn’t look too cold in February. I am surprised Lee drank coke instead of cold bear or wine. 😂 Great video title! This is the best frugal travel channel!

Thank you, Sue, for always writing the loveliest comments! 🙏❤ I'm so pleased you enjoyed the story of Pedro and Iñes, tragic though it was. Alcobaça is beautiful - we're so fortunate to have been able to housesit there as it can be pricey for accommodation. It was Lee's idea to do the kiss... you know we're not normally that cheesy 😂 The weather was amazing... we did have a few wet days, but they were a great opportunity to stay inside with the pets 😻 Yes, Lee has the occasional stomach problem due to the overuse of antibiotics as anti-malarials when we were on the 40-week truck trip around Africa in 2010-2011. It's caused an imbalance in his gut flora which flares up occasionally - he was taking tablets for it, so couldn't drink alcohol. He's fine now but was struggling over Christmas as couldn't eat much and lost loads of weight. His New Year's resolution was to gain weight, which he's doing slowly but surely in a healthy way 😃😁 ~ Mandy

Hi. I'm a Brit who's been living in Alcobaça for 13yrs and I've never eaten at the tennis club so I'll give that a go :D. I enjoyed your tour but would correct something: the pastries are no longer made by nuns in the convents. No nuns live in the convents these days and the pastries are made at bakeries. In your next video,. don't forget to talk about ginja - a liqueur which was made by monks back in the day. I'm very impressed with Mandy's pronunciation of Portuguese words and I'm glad you enjoyed your visit. I'll be sharing the film with friends and family who haven't been able to visit me here. Thank you.

Hello Jennifer. Thank you for your lovely comment. How wonderful that you have lived in Alcobaça for 13 years- it's such a beautiful place! I was meaning to reply yesterday, and have noticed the point re: the University of Coimbra building has been removed... I was going to pin your original comment as thought it was excellent, and corrected a few of my errors! I hate to say this, but I barely mentioned ginja when we were in Alcobaça, as we spoke a bit about it in our Óbidos video! I know that was a glaring oversight, and as we're housesitting in Nazaré until March, we really should pop over and try the Alcobaça ginja, and go inside the library! There will be at least 2 more Alcobaça videos, one is of Lee in the market, practising his Portuguese! 0:32 - the yellow building is a institution for disabled people (called CEERIA) 4:27 - the white poster with black letters says that if you want to visit that building (that is for rent), you have to bring a ladder. It is because some years ago, the floor was at the level of the door, but the city did as it is now, and the owner put this sticker to protest against that. Alcobaça have much dishops and each of the sculptures on 5:07 (there is more on walk by the river) is made by each dishop, and are inspired by Pedro and Inês story 5:32 - this building is a preschool owned by nuns

The sirens are usually related to the town’s firemen (Bombeiros) and the amount/number of ringing means different things. Most often calls are for the volunteers to join a required action/intervention. Hello Vera! It's always so wonderful to receive comments like yours, and to learn that our videos have been helpful and informative for others. It shows that we're doing exactly what we'd hoped to accomplish. Alcobaça is lovely, and I hope you enjoy it as much as we did. In regards to going into fancy places, after a suggestion from a regular viewer, we set up a Buy Me A Coffee account, and will use any such gifts to treat ourselves to something we'd never normally have indulged in, as a frugal mindset is difficult to overcome! We actually used our first gift of 5 coffees to buy brunch for my birthday, and that will be shown in the next Alcobaça video, as I want to thank people for their generosity and support. We used another gift when we were in Cascais, so that'll be shown in a few weeks. I do wish we were more able to stop and go to these lovely places, and am determined to do so and video the experience, and to thank the kind person who treated us! ~ Mandy

That siren was scary as it's very like the wwii ones. When I visited the sardine canning factory in Portimāo, every so often a recording of that siren went off - the lunch break siren for the former workers - but it made the museum seem really spooky - especially as there were lots of inanimate manikins everywhere, doing their mock duties along the factory line! An interesting place to visit if you're ever back in Portimāo. I did a very early dreadful quality vlog there with the world's shakiest camera when I very first started making videos about 5 and a half years ago. It was a GoPro Hero 1! No monitor - just a cube! Terrible choice in retrospect!!

We did visit that excellent museum in Portimão and included it in a video. Thank you as it's made me change the title, as it was purely focused on the lockdown update for last April, didn't even mention our trips to Monchique, Foia and the Sardine Canning museum! I love those sirens, probably because we don't have anything similar in NZ or Oz, so they're such a novelty! I have to say that your filming is so professional now... it gives me hope to hear that you too went through a learning process, so I don't feel too much of an amateur when I watch your excellent vlogs! 😃😁 ~ Mandy

Hello Jennifer. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch this video on a device instead of your smart TV as it was so lovely to read your very kind comment! April will be a great time to visit Portugal, not too busy and with lovely weather 🌞 It's so kind of you to ask about our Buy Me A Coffee link. We didn't want to force it on anyone, as that's not how we roll, so it's sort of buried in the Description of each video 😁🤣 We so appreciate your kind words and welcome you to the community! I look forward to hearing about your first trip to Portugal, and I hope you enjoy this beautiful country as much as we do! 😃😁🇵🇹 ~ Mandy

  • @FrugalTravellers

Hmmm... that's a great question. Alcobaça is hilly and Caldas is quite flat. The Caldas market has the best value olives and cheese that we've found so far in Portugal, while Alcobaça has a Decathlon store. I'm not sure about Lee but I think I'd choose Alcobaça if I could live on the hill, as that view is breathtaking! I seem to recall hearing that property in Caldas might be less expensive though! ~ Mandy
