This is so educational! Thank you so much for sharing! I’m a Medieval fantasy author and am currently writing a novel in which one of the main characters is a girl with albinism. I want to make sure she’s represented as accurately and respectfully as possible. ❤️ Thank you for your videos, they’re so helpful!

I’m planning to write a story about a girl with albinism in the entertainment industry. I just wish we saw more people with albinism in movies and so on. I hope your book turned out well
I have always found albinism so cool ever since I was a teenager I used to study it in high school (or at least look up info online) I think it's so terrible that people treat people with this disorder different because it's just wrong (and I can relate I have autism and we are made fun of also) love this video and please don't change anything I think you are beautiful

With albinism some people have thought my hair is dyed. When I get this in public I used to say “I get my color from God. While most people with my hair color get it from a bottle for hundreds to thousands of dollars,”

I’ve had the exact same thing! Constantly. Who’s your hairdresser? What did you use to lift your colour? What’s your natural colour. I found out hanging out with some colleagues after working there for 6 months that they were all thinking I was constantly touching up my roots and re-dying my hair and couldn’t figure out how I managed to afford it. I laughed so hard when they told me.

I’m legally blind, blonde, and blue eyed. Makes me wonder how often blue eyed people have vision issues & how related to vision is melanin. Great video!
@UnsightlyOpinions
2 ай бұрын
Thanks! Usually your eye colour really doesn't cause vision issues, unless it's directly related to pigment like albinism, or iris development -- aniriidia. While it is true that people with blue eyes are more prone to UV damage and optic cancers and some kinds of cataracts because blue eyes have less melanin and less ability to protect from UV rays, there isn't really a link to blindness due to blue eyes alone. :)
Thank you so very much for this educational message. I put the link in my group, The "-isms" of Discrimination - A Safe Space To Learn. I used to wonder why she looked different. I never asked because I didn't want to be rude. We worked at the same riding stables as kids and she was amazing. It's only now I realise she was albino. hank you so much for your channel and for providing important education about this unique condition. You are incredible and very beautiful

@@UnsightlyOpinions I'm currently working on a book that has a character with albinism in it. Do you have any suggestions on the development?
This information is very useful to know about albinos because I have trying to find some good research on them and couldn't find anything concrete thank you for bringing this to my attention I will definitely keep this in mind I think albino women look really beautiful too it's kind of unique to see something like that
Thank you! That was a really good explanation of the visual issues of albinos. While I have some pigment in skin and hair, I have all the occular issues in full measure. I have been made to feel that it was not "appropriate for me to use a white cane because"you can see!" When I was younger and with better reflexes, I could take it, but I now also have a nuerological disorder and after several bad falls, I got mobility training and walked with a support cane and a mobility cane and I now wish I had that decades ago. Thanks for being here and being a peer-mentor for us... Great job!

I had a similar experience and a horrible accident before a cane was given to me. I had "too much sight" for a cane when that was truly never the case. I'm glad you have a better way to manage things now. Always here to help and befriend fellow PWAs (melanin or not ;P as we are all fall under the albinism umbrella) :)
Thank for the education on Albionism
Hello so my mum actually trying to create a children's book about a boy who has albinism it is specifically meant for children in Africa to learn more about albinism since in Africa it is really bad to be albino. She was interviewed and the video was released today it's called "the perception of albinism". I know it's not right to promote something but I think that this book could change so much especially in countries with a lot of misconceptions.

I don't understand why as a culture we're so obsessed with tanning and brown skin. Porcelain white skin and white hair are just as beautiful as brown skin and brown or black hair. .
Not even albino rodents or lagomorphs (rabbits and hares) have red eyes. Blood vessels exposed behind the eyes make their pupils appear red. The same with humans applies to them. Rodents and lagomorphs have their irises and sclera (white part of the eye) mostly covered by the eye socket. You hardly see their irises.
I think you understand eyes better than any eye dr.
Your voice is so soothing, could listen to you all day 💜 was wondering are any of your other senses heightened due to loss of vision?
@UnsightlyOpinions
3 жыл бұрын
That's so kind of you to say! That's a bit of a difficult one to answer and it changes depending on who you talk to. Most people would agree that if you lose a sense that you definitely pay attention to the ones you have more. I have certain skills that I don't know I would have if I wasn't blind like auditory spacial awareness so I would lean to saying yes, but with the caveat that it isn't like in the movies where your other senses totally makes up for the ones you are missing.

You have been offered an EEG ( brain scan ) to monitor brain activity of the eyes during movement or rest? Have you increase or lower the Zinc levels towards your eyes or Optic Nerves? Do some research with a Neuro Optimologists to find more answers if it help. They specialize these matters. I hope I did help, thank you for listening

Yes. Your left eye is “looking for” your nose. But is really mild.

@EclecticallyEccentric
3 жыл бұрын
@@UnsightlyOpinions Shaking hands sounds kind of weird, but harmless enough, and at least they thought you had magic powers in a good way and not evil. The hair thing sounds extremely creepy. But that might be because of a story my dad told me about a patient out at a state psychiatric hospital. My dad worked there as a behavior analyst at the time, later becoming a program manager. This particular hospital specializes and deals almost exclusively with male convicted sex offenders(basically people who have served their time in prison, but have been analyzed by a team of professionals, and two or more psychologists, at least one psychiatrist, a profiler and/or behavior analyst, and a judge, have all ruled them to be too dangerous to release put into society). Anyway, there was a new psych tech there and was in a program where she'd spend a few days shadowing different people, taking notes and learning more about what they did out in the different units. She was shadowing my dad as they did rounds on one particular unit(I don't remember which one, but since she was new, I don't think it was unit 9, the behavioral one). A patient came up to her and very matter-of-factly came up to her and asked if he could have a lock of her hair. He explained that he would like to tape it up on his wall so he could pet it, and think about petting her. She politely told him no, which he accepted, disappointed. Then when she and my father left the room and walked down the hall, my dad went behind her and whispered, "Put the lotion in the basket." Being called a ghost or demon is simply rude. Unless it's from a small child, or perhaps an extremely superstitious person who should know better, whoever says it clearly knows it's untrue and just says it for shock value. Someone who looks different is probably quite aware of the fact that they do, and there's not much need to point it out rudely. In my opinion, you don't look much like a demon or ghost. More like a kind of fairy.

The National Association for Albinism and Hypopigmentation actually says that parents whom daughter that is diagmosed with OA it's extremely uncommon because the gene for OA is on the x chromsome which means that OA is called x-linked OA. Which mean only woman carry the gene for it. The only way a daughter can have OA is if her father has and her mother has a copy of the x chromsone .
If someone asks if you have superpowers, say "Let's see... (wave your fingers in a strange manner) I guess not, you're still here."
Why albinos have impaired vision SHORT ANSWER: Melanin is crucial in the development of the eye, so with no melanin, the eye is underdeveloped, causing impaired vision.

us with congenital cataracts also don't have depth perception either. I don't have any depth perception due to my left eye veering off to the left.

What happens when a normal melanin man marries an albino woman? What could be the outcome of their children?
@UnsightlyOpinions
2 жыл бұрын
There is a chance they may have an albino child. Albinism is recessive meaning that one copy of the changed gene must be inherited from each parent. Many people are carriers of the gene and never know or show albinism in their family. If the pigmented individual is not a carrier there will no or very little chance of an albino child. There is some slight differences for ocular albinism because that gene is x linked so it will depend on whether the child is male or female.

My son was born with albinism i am afraid for thecstigma he may face . How did you handle it and how was it introduced to u by ur parents
@UnsightlyOpinions
2 жыл бұрын
I completely understand your fear and apprehension. Know that your son is capable of anything he puts his mind to. I likely learned of my albumism at the same time as my parents, because I was diagnosed very late. I think I started asking questions about why I was needing to do things different than other children (sunscreen, large print, braille, aide, O&M, etc.), and that is when my parents explained about albinism to me. While your son may experience some discrimination or stigma associated with albinism, the world is a much friendlier place now than it was 20 some odd years ago. If and when something comes up, be his advocate, and support him and his needs. Hug him, tell him your on his side, and doing everything you can to help him succeed and while it won’t help prevent any problems from coming up, it’ll let him know he can come to you with problems and you will always be there when he needs you most. That’s the best advice I can give. Good luck 💜

How do you keep your hair so white? My daughter is albino and her hair turns yellow (not the roots, just the length) and she is frustrated with it.

One thing you can try is a purple conditioner or shampoo. Not for every wash, but once a week for maintenance of bright white hair. The other thing I find yellows our hair is shampoos with additives and colours in the shampoo and conditioner. Look for one that’s white or as uncoloured as possible. I have no proof of this, but sulphite free shampoos seem to yellow hair less at least for me!
