INFORMATION FOR PILOTS WHO WANT TO FLY TO GREECE / CORFU:
If you want to fly to Corfu Kerkyra LGKR make sure to get a PPR (prior permission required) from the local handling agency ideally a few days in advance: cfuops@skyserv.aero
(and write the "unique PPR id" + the "Parking Authorization Number" in your flight plan field 18 "RMK/...")
(the handling request should include: Aircraft call sign, aircraft type, MTOW, aircraft owner, max. crosswind to/ldg in kts, date+time of arrival/departure, airport of origin/destination, your contact details, AOPA card number, persons on board, name + country + passport number of pilot and all passengers, carrier operator name + VAT number)
LANDING & HANDLING PRICES IN GREECE:
Sign up for a AOPA membership! You will get reduced landing and handling fees to a high price level instead of an insanely high price level on many airports in Greece. The annual AOPA membership fee is about € 60,- and it pays off for just one flight trip to Greece when you land at a few airports.

    Thanks for the great video and storytelling! It doesn't make much sense to get a clearance to climb to a higher altitude if you must be at a lower altitude inside next airspace - is there any ATC coordination available at all? I was wondering if FL100 or 10000ft would work better. A lower altitude is very good for sightseeing, I guess the Adria VFR routes are designed to be flown below the TMAs and around CTRs of airports. Maybe this is the default mindset for ATC for any VFR flight! Obviously the terrain sets hard restrictions for IFR traffic, so their appoaches and departures occupy a remarkable altitude block on the west coast of Croatia. I have personal experience from 2016 from LHSM (Heviz-Balaton, Hungary) to LDLO (Lošijn, Croatia), i had filed almost direct over Zagreb VOR at 5000ft; Zagreb INFO suggested to avoid the Zagreb TMA which I did (clouds didn't allow any higher that time). A year later, I sat on the right seat, we had filed an Adria route around Zagreb (LDLO-LHSM), but this time at FL100 - Zagreb RADAR cleared us directly over airport to the border crossing point instead of the planned zigzag, that wouldn't have made much sense when flying high. Greetings from Malmi Airport, Helsinki, Finland!

    Thanks! I think most of the time ATC focuses on their own airspace and don't care that much if the VFR traffic needs to descend to a lower altitude in the next airspace. Especially in this case where we flew over a border. In general we also made the experience that when you fly at a high altitude most of the time they let you fly direct routes. That's probably because at a high altitude you are not so much a factor for departing and arriving traffic (of course depending on the area where you are flying). If you fly low they always need to pay attention with coordination of the traffic and therefore you often have to fly zigzag and stick to the local common routes. Malmi is such a nice airport, we were there in 2005 with a Dimona. We have to return!

    Is it customary when flying VFR in Europe to state the first letter of your registration then the last two? Ie. D-NA?

  • @Flugabenteuer

    @Flugabenteuer

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes - but only if the controller starts with this abbreviation (your first call needs to have the entire call sign) - thats the usual way how people are used to it here. I have heard in the US there is no uniform way to abbreviate the callsign!?

  • @CanuckFlyer

    @CanuckFlyer

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@Flugabenteuer Interesting! In the USA and Canada you make your initial call with your full registration, but then are allowed to shorten it to the last 3 letters or numbers only if ATC does so. The practice of still using your first registration Letter ie. N (USA) or C (Canada) isn't required. I guess in Europe the ATC likes to identify which country the aircraft is registered in for some reason?

  • @Flugabenteuer

    @Flugabenteuer

    3 жыл бұрын

    That's an interesting question! I guess in the USA the majority of the call signs start with N because there are probably few foreign aircrafts like from Canada with C. So it doesn’t make much sense to repeat N in every call. Maybe because Europe consists of many relatively small countries there are probably more foreign registered aircrafts flying in each country and therefore it is easier for the controllers to distinguish the aircrafts if we include the first letter in the call. 🤷‍♂️ When I listen to american radio I notice that at radio frequencies the first number 1 is often not said (123,600 = 23,6). This is similar to the direction of runways where runway 08 is just runway 8. Maybe Americans are in general more used to abbreviations 😄

  • @CanuckFlyer

    @CanuckFlyer

    @@Flugabenteuer Yes, in North America the radio communications can get extremely casual. Usually seems to work out fine but definitely leads to confusion sometimes. Especially the practice in the USA of giving you a landing clearance even though there can be 5 aircraft on approach in front of you!

    Mich wundert, dass sogar die Controller diese missverständliche Sprechweise mit CLIMB (TO/TWO) 7000 FEET mitmachen. Das habe ich in Deutschland noch nie gehabt. Gerade wo die doch auf der Frequenz genug Leute haben sollten, die wirklich auf 27000 ft wollen, auch wenn es dann zugegebenermaßen FL270 wäre.

    Hello Kyprianos, what an honor, I saw many of your activities. The AOPA website was incredible helpful for the preparation of the flight. Thank you for your great work! Other countries could learn a lot from this pragmatic way of providing useful information. For other interested pilots the AOPA website is linked in the video description. I remember that moment very good, I was thinking too difficult: Often controllers just say to which points you have to fly, so I did not expect this question. I was not sure what she was referring to with “VFR route”, I was thinking maybe there is a usual way of flying the east or west coast route when arriving from the Albanian direction and I don’t know how she wants me to fly (because of traffic etc) Therefore I said “no .. expect instructions”. Next time I would simply say yes 😄 My comment “very strange” was referring to the receiving difficulties with the approach frequency (thats a bit lost in the video editing). Do you know if it is common that the approach frequency is difficult to receive coming from the Albanian mountains? The tower frequency was very clear to receive. It was amazing to fly in Greece, its such an incredible beautiful country! I can recommend it to everyone. Many greetings

    @@Flugabenteuer thank you for the comments my friend. In AOPA Hellas (Greece) exactly because we know its kind of a maze for the first time visitor from abroad, we have all this information on line to help visitors. Not everybody reads it as you did. The controller basically asked you this so that she would give you proper guidance, i.e. if you had them ready she would just tell you go there and there, if not she would guide you with instructions to the same area with a description (as she did). Regarding reception, Its years since I last flew this route. Last time I did (flight from EDMS Straubing direct to Kerkyra) both Approach and Tower were well within reception from miles away.

    Thats interesting, thanks for the explanation! Its a very good service she did well with the guidance! Now thats a long leg from Straubing to Kerkyra! I wish our DA40 could do that. I guess we just called the approach frequency at a unsuitable position (maybe a bit too early still between the Albanian mountains).
