Alaska Maule M6: Halibut Spear Fishing Adventure

Спорт

Brian, Brad, and I decided to explore the icy waters off the southern part of the Kenai Peninsula. We packed up a zodiac and an outboard in the maule and went to check it out. The spear fishing was slow, but the diving was great. Super fun trip.

Three fully grown men, camping gear a rubber raft and an outboard motor all in one plane? Wow impressive.

I wish the maule could carry that much. We have made it work in one trip before but we went with very minimal gear and fuel, but I made two trips in and we brought in a full camp and extra fuel for some exploring. It will carry what ever you can put in it for the most part, but at some point your asking for trouble. Thanks for the comment.

Seems both have merits. They were trying out the floats since they got them for free. Brad got 115 pounder and Brian a 95 pounder that made things interesting. Those two are the pros, I just like swimming around, still lots to learn on my end. To me, it’s more just another fun way to enjoy Alaska and push myself a bit.

I love T-crafts. My grandpa flew a 75 hp TC all over Alaska on floats in the 50’s. And used to haul his wife and three kids across lake Clark, pretty much used it as a boat that occasionally got into ground effect.

Great video! I’ve been eyeing that spot for an adventure for some time, neat that you and the Coldwater crew could get out there. I’ve yet to combine my hobbies of spearing and flying, but I’m thinking of giving Montague a go one of these days. So did your M6 use to be a M5 based on the cowling? I enjoy flying my dads M5, they are awesome planes.

Yes, an m5-235. Now M6 with an M7a “long wing” and some extra ponies up front. Make a good performer out of it. But the 128 inch flaps does not leave a ton of aileron in cross winds. Love the plane, has some quarks, but so does all planes aside from a 172…, Montague is a fun place when the weather cooperates. Nice and clear water.

Hey, do you have anything in your baggage compartment to tie down or organize the zodiac and outboard motor? I'm building a bearhawk 5 and planning to spear out of it quite a bit. I'm trying to come up with baggage compartment organization ideas for exactly what you're doing. Thinking extended baggage tubes for guns but I haven't come up with any good ideas for the rest of it.

I don’t have anything specific for spear fishing but I do have extended baggage top and bottom. The top runs all the way to the front of my horizontal and I use it for spear guns, fishing poles etc. It has aluminum sides and I can slide 8 foot rigid and 10 foot flexible material back there. Cargo tie downs are always important for loose loads. Good luck, bearhawks a sweet, and the five has my attention as well.

I run a similar setup except instead of a zodiac it's an "Alaskan" kaboat. That and a 6hp 4 stroke outboard plus 2 people and other gear fits fine in my BH4. With all the other gear there's no real need to tie it all down as there's nowhere for it to go.
