    Chris Absolutely the bait helped so I’d recommend going with that. I was using a 120cm hammerhead evo 2 with an 8mm shaft but I also had my JBL Woody 38 Special as my back up gun for my secondary shots.

    I work on a charter out of homer where I grew up and fished my entire we like to let it thaw out with salt on it to make the skin more tuff and as they melt it fills the box with juice from the herring makes for amazing bait for halibut

    Eric, I was using a 7mm wetsuit and we were in the water 1-2 hours at a time. Most of the trip was in shallower waters about 20-40 feet deep but I did have a few dives down to 70 feet. I would definitely go if you have a chance, Alaska diving is unreal.

    Thanks, Borce. I’ve been wanting to at least snorkel in and around Kachemak Bay for a very long time. I’ve lived in Homer quite a while now. I know some friends that scuba here, but would just be too cumbersome in my boat. My boat is about the same size as the Julia Lynn you were using, so I can see it being a reality! I’m trying to see and figure out all of your gear you used as well. Did you guys go at slack tide, or let the boat float along with you and the tide? Would you recommend a one piece, or maybe farmer john’s plus a top? Thanks!

  • @borce32

    @borce32

    5 жыл бұрын

    Eric Brown We went for slack before the tide started ripping out. We were in the water for an hour or so which was plenty of time to get the job done. Also My wetsuit has high pants but I would recommend a 2 piece wetsuit. Thats normally what the spearfishing suits include. Either high pants or farmer johns will work. I personally love the high pants since you have better mobility and breathability in the chest and dont feel too compressed.

    @@borce32 Im used to cold, average water temp I dive is 48-52 degrees. What im really hoping for is advise on where you were finding fish, not spots, I wouldn't ask that. But should I be hitting mud flats before drop offs? I was figuring on doing drifts with the tide over muddy bottom near drop offs and staring at sand as one does while hunting bottom fish. Im planning on using a 50" 3 band midhandle rigged to a 15L float with a breakaway. Just trying to not fuck up and forget something critical or spend my week fishing incorrectly. Thanks again.

    Brendan We ended up fishing the kelp beds and thats where we had the most luck. Are you planning on drifting off the shore or using a boat/kayak. The tide swings are epic in Alaska so be careful with drifting. I’d recommend fishing the slack or at least right before slack because thats when the fish are most active. I’d recommend getting in contact with a fishing charter captain and seeing if they can take you out to some good fishing grounds. Yes I think you’ll be able to find halibut in mud spots close to drop offs but you might have more luck getting rock fish in those areas. Most halibut like flat bottom surfaces, rock, sand, kelp, etc. they camo based on their surroundings but sometimes you will be able to see them swimming along and thats when they’ll be easiest to spot. Definitely a smart call on the breakaway since you never know what kind of halibut you’ll hit. Some are aggressive, others just sink to the bottom and sit.

    I see that there is a 13ft tidal swing. I’m only going to be attempting this on slack tides. I’m a tag along as a gift on a rod and reel trip so I’m just hoping to get out a few times to take some video and local species to eat. Halibut is the goal but I’m in it for the experience. I’m not going to go to aslask and not dive it ya know? Appreciate the insight, just gave you a follow on the gram.
