Some great Quotes from the works of Alan Watts:
"The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.
To have faith is to trust yourself to the water. When you swim you don't grab hold of the water, because if you do you will sink and drown. Instead you relax, and float.
You don't look out there for God, something in the sky, you look in you
We cannot be more sensitive to pleasure without being more sensitive to pain.
Never pretend to a love which you do not actually feel, for love is not ours to command.
I owe my solitude to other people.
The ego is nothing other than the focus of conscious attention.
No work or love will flourish out of guilt, fear, or hollowness of heart, just as no valid plans for the future can be made by those who have no capacity for living now.
You are that vast thing that you see far, far off with great telescopes.
Trying to define yourself is like trying to bite your own teeth
You and I are all as much continuous with the physical universe as a wave is continuous with the ocean.

And the truly mind-blowing thing about Alan's teaching, is when we listen to him we are not really learning. It's already in us. We have just forgotten. We can't help but resonate.

I had a life changing experience not so long ago, and the way I looked at the world changed completely. Not just my values and ideals, but literally the way it looked is different. It's tough to convey to others, but it's somewhere between seeing the world through a third person perspective, and seeing my life as an infinite series of slides. I can't pretend things matter anymore. I can't go back to the way I used to be. I feel shell shocked, looking around at the world, with the veil lifted for the first time. I grapple with the idea that maybe I have had a psychotic break, that maybe I'm crazy or delusional, but I feel lucid, reasonable. It's as though I was navigating life as a maze, and suddenly I've been lifted over the walls, and can see the whole thing from above. It makes exploring the maze seem psychotic. It makes looking for purpose, happiness within the maze seem silly. In any sense, Alan Watts helps me feel comfortable with this revelation. Maybe the world looks very different to me, now, but that's okay. Throughout my life I will have many understandings of the world around me, some more useful, some less. Either way, peace, compassion, and thoughtfulness are admirable principles, and to work towards a better understanding of my own mind is a worthwhile quest. Thanks to Watts and the community.

I felt that the ego is the third person idea. When I listened to Watts I felt that I had up to now constantly been seeing myself from the third person, but that the real me is the subjective experience itself, pure "first person consciousness" that suffuses all life, the "I Am" of God/Atman.

Some people say we live in a matrix, or a holographic universe. The better analogy would be, that we are living “as a reflection”. As a reflection of source(or God). ONE cannot know the color of ONE’s own eyes without observing oneself in a reflection. The reflection gives the illusion that two exist, thus giving ONE the ability to observe itself. To become aware of the color of ONE’s own eyes.

Consciousness reflecting upon itself, gives consciousness to the reflection. Like looking in a mirror and your reflection comes to life. Both sides of the mirror are both the source and the reflection. Nothing exists unless there is something else to observe it. Reflection is the only way to create another you, if you are the only one that exists. This is how ONE can become TWO, in order to bring the ONE into existence.

Personally, when I use the article "I" in speech, it's used in such a way that the audience listening associates the concept being explained or the story being told as something personal. The article "I" is used as a frame of reference for the listener, so that they understand the data that follows is a personal interpretation of an experience rather than a repetition of an external influence. "I" is just a trigger word to symbolize it comes from within, rather than the world itself

Consciousness pervades the universe. We have antennas called brains that can tap into different levels of it. As we evolve, we develop potentials for greater realizations of that One consciousness. We develop concepts of it, all kinds of philosophies and systems of belief, but we always fall short of an accurate identification. Its potentials are limitless and the value, the real realization, is to realize that you are a part of it. There is no separation. Since you come from it, you are like a leaf on a cosmic tree and its not just you or a lower form of life... it is every atom in the universe.

The only time I have ever felt “normal” is when I found philosophy. From Zeno to Yung to Peterson. I always thought I was weird/strange because I thought the ideas of philosophy were so much more important than what society tells us is important.

Awakening into higher states of consciousness depends on our ability to reveal the beliefs that conceal our ability to discern truth.

Apart from the 'truth' that fried chicken tastes good, in any larger sense, what is truth? Does the collective discernment of 8 billion people create a picture of what truth looks like, or can be examined by the human senses? And the chances that everyone would agree? If you don't know what it looks like how could you be aware of it should you happen to stumble across it in the deep woods or in a cave? What an impossible dilemma. You're looking for something and don't even know what it is beyond the meaning of a plate of food or some sort of physical or psychological orgasm. How does one overcome the fact that most truth is a lie and most people like it that way.

Marlin Knight Subjective truth is truth based off of a person's perspective, feelings, or opinions. Though, everything we know is based off of our perception does not invalidate the plausibility of objective truth existing, independent of our ability to perceive it. In this case, the absolute best one can say is, “why does it matter, or why should I care?”

@@robjohnson4906 Subjective truth is not truth while objectivity is made of thoroughly tested ideas. Perception is a hard won battle with one's own intellect, to train the mind to develop the skills of critical analysis. In due time the train of thought is a mile long, sinking in a muddy corn field; no track, no destination. Faint praise, broken hearted, tried to shit and only farted. And people talk about nothing but well-made tennis balls and used rubbers.
