Alan Watts - Understanding your dark side with Carl Jung

📚 Join me in the cozy solitude of a country cottage surrounded by my cherished books, where I reflect on the profound influence of Carl Gustav Jung's teachings. As I gaze at the shelves, dominated by Jung's volumes, I am compelled to share the enduring impact he has had on my intellectual journey.
🌌 Key Points Discussed:
Introduction to Jung's Legacy: Delve into the transformative impact of Carl Jung on my intellectual and spiritual evolution.
Balancing Eastern Philosophy: Explore how Jung's insights provided a balancing influence during my late adolescence, steering me away from excessive fascination with exotic ideas.
Acknowledging the Dark Side: Reflect on Jung's profound principle of recognizing the polarity of life, particularly his rejection of the absolute conflict between good and evil, and the implications for personal and cultural understanding.
Integration of Egoism: Explore Jung's revolutionary perspective on egoism, acceptance of one's dark side, and the necessity of integrating, rather than condemning, the aspects of oneself that may seem troubling.
🤔 Thought-Provoking Insights:
Acceptance as a Moral Achievement: Uncover the moral dilemma of acceptance, as discussed by Jung, and its role in healing, forgiveness, and the journey toward self-discovery.
Egoism as a Divine Will: Contemplate the idea that egoism, when understood and embraced, can lead to profound personal growth, resembling a divine will.
🌐 Universal Themes: Jung's teachings transcend cultural and philosophical boundaries, providing a unique perspective that resonates with the human experience globally.

The wonder of Alan Watts is the timelessness of his lectures. No matter how many years ahead, the source of human suffering is still on a primordial basic level

Jung and Watts together have given me more existential faith and peace than all the rest of the worlds belief-systems, gurus, psychologists, self-help type pod/vlodcasters and writers put together. And I am 48 and began my quest for existential meaning at age 11. So I have deeply considered almost all of it at one point. If Watt's was still alive I would be his groupie ;) I am just SO glad that this lectures were recorded and gifted to world free of charge or redaction. I am thinking about starting a github to build an LLM from his books and lecture-transcripts so there can be a chat-gpt-style app which you can ask questions. Essentially an AI version of "what would Alan Watts say?" :)

Watts is always so comforting to listen to. I also find Camus and absurdism to be greatly comforting. Sure, life is essentially meaningless, but that’s ok bc we are able to create our own meaning. We all have a dark and light side but we can choose which of these sides we want to display. Now when I go down the rabbit hole of do we actually have free will, that’s when things get interesting. As a person to which determinism makes the most logical sense, even so, it’s MY brain making these decisions and choosing to be a “good” person by modern standards. Or at least I hope I am 😂

Suffering is the ultimate medicine but the medicine begins to work when you accept and raise your frequency to the point of tapping into the magic to turn darkness into light through acceptance of one’s existence no judgment no ego…not for everyone until it’s your time to awaken and survive the test of time and suffering as medicine to bring you to this very message

I would say that suffering is our first teacher. once we realize this suffering will stop being our teacher and our presence/awareness will take its place. "creating" peace, love and happiness instead by the connection to the source of our being/existence which have everything we possible need.

I’m living between Waiting for Godot and Dante’s Inferno I seem to not find myself in many of the comments. Opening is torturous, embracing impossible, hopelessness full that possibility fully. Acceptance so difficult as to bring deep grief and the sense of an axe splitting my mind in two. The fragile fragmentation seems to me must be acknowledged if I am to traverse the insanity, I’m in. The pain is overwhelmingly paralysing. I have had many years of therapy and 25 years as a psychotherapist and why why why is the pain as great in every client amd returning to me now I’m becoming older with fragile health. My reason for commenting is connected perhaps to others who are reading these comments and feel greater estrangement not less, which a lot of the comments seem to infer to me. Perhaps the acceptance is of the pain not freedom of the pain. In the visceral primal traumatic pain does not well for me sit with a development or arrested ego. I think the ego is transcended by the pain. Then the fragments, where the ego once was…. That’s not a comment on ego on my part of it being a good or a bad thing. Though I’m wondering if my own ego and my primal traumatic wounds merged into a journey to too too far beyond the dark. I don’t seem to find a foothold, the harder it’s getting the less interested I’m feeling towards any sense of process/journey. What have I said here I reflect, I have said, it’s a confused confusing journey, too look for rules or make sense of is perhaps the fruitless journey/quest. I wish I hadn’t given up drinking, perhaps that makes sense to me more, or that earlier attempts (as in over 40yrs ago) on my life could have ceased this senseless journey of immersion of pain. If I’m looking to let go it is because I wish not to feel this fear alongside the painful pain. Alan Watts died young I think, I’m going to research why that was. He is charismatic with all the underlying stuff he speaks of, is it the charisma or is it so…

@@smibredenblaque1741 thank you, you’re the only person to have apparently heard me. It means so much, estrangement can only be lifted to the transformative if there is a another to hear it, relate to it, resonate with it, be open to hear and therefore sit with what I would characterise as the bleakness therein. However fluid a moment that was for you, I felt received at some level. On a more basic level , a human has reached out or in to me, my experience and say ‘well said’ I have taken as yea I can hear this estranged human. I’m listening and watching Amy Winehouse at Glasto in 2007. The struggle she underwent, even now I feel regret as well as a sense that many of us could perhaps have done more. Such a most talented most likely traumatised human and a soul that had carried through the inter generational struggle of trauma, that sang out vis a vie her voice. Cuts through me like a wolf howling in the wind. RIP Amy. I wish I had met you. Though I feel your painful path was set, laid down in front of her, did she sense a choice, my own thoughts are most likely not. ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹

And I'm beginning undestand that I need to cease fighting my darkness and love it instead of fearing it. Like the monster book of monsters in harry potter, it will snap at you and growl at you and eat itself up but when you stroke it's spine, it sooths it and it opens itself up and shares its knowledge so you can get to know the monsters.

If it is not integrated and situations present them in a certain way you end up with societies like Nazi Germany. (I wrote my college thesis on this) To integrate your shadow is to understand the doestoevsky quote "Everyman is not only responsible for everything they do, but for everything everyone else does"

Its helping to me, when i am feeling ashamed about my past or my present, or the thoughts that i have about the future, to meditate and take a moment to observe "who" its feeling ashamed inside. The answer normally its that the part of myself that see life with unjustice or unfair. And when i can recognize that, i ask again to myself "Do you want to live a life feeling that it is unfair?". And if i am really honest with myself, the answer its "No, i dont want to live feeling in that way". Then i feel the motivation and the energy to allow a new way of seeing life.@@firstlast2094

Why are you ashamed? Anybody making real money has to sell their soul and plenty who aren't making good money selling soul to the company store. Modern doctors are criminally ignorant, same for ALL of institutions, they sold thier soul and create harm. What you do relieves repression! Do poor people have freedom or dignity? The poor like to be self righteous and proud that they are heaven bound and the rich are going down. You are selling your body, a tradesman sells their body, an engineer their mind, what's the difference outside religion. I get the double life though, is it possible to have a relationship with someone who understands the industry?

A fantastic commentary and analysis of the unspoken and often hidden aspects of spirituality, culture, and government. Seeing into the unspoken motivations of those who promote the idea of the “enemy” within society, those who understand that getting the party adherents whipped up in their anger, hatred, and fear of the “other”, the “alien”, the “different”, is the means of controlling and keeping in line of the party adherents. This way of controlling the adherents has been used for a very long time, and, unfortunately, is currently the modus operandi of politicians in the USA.

"The Christian message of forgiveness /loving your enemy can ONLY be truly expressed IF the Christian can be HONEST enough to face and integrate his own dark side... For the least of the low stands not in front of you, but within. Only AFTER you have embraced the wolf within (his unforgivable wretchedness in thought and temptation ) can you offer the Sinner in front of you Christlike compassion and understanding. Wow!

Existence is a construct divided into 2 parts: part A life, and part B death. Part A is the appetizer, part B is the main course and dessert. Both parts require a physical body, death requires a much longer period of time to come to conclusion. At the instant of death, the soul is teleported, by means of quantum entanglement to a place wished for, to another physical body, in a parallel universe. Thus every single wish and dream hoped for during life will become reality. Every candle blown, every coin tossed, every lonely nocturnal phantasy imagined. In death the most wondrous events become reality, with our senses at their optimal. And when the tens of thousands of wishes are expired, it is back to part A again.

Thanks for sharing. I see what you are saying as an existencial possibility, but also see other possibilities. Like for example the possibility that the ego doesnt exist, and what we call life and dead lose completely their meaning in that scenario because there is nothing coming and going, just a flow of life with sound and silence, that we see the sound as life and silence as death, but in the great picture its only parts of the same ever changing melody and rhythm.

hi @Belindaknight I fully agree! Having travelled many spiritual paths, I find the synthesis Alan Watts makes of East and West Spirituality so compelling that it's exactly "THERE", that place I would like to sit as my preferred Religion. Alas, "THERE" doesn't exist! I end up offending either, my Hindu Gurus or my Christian Priests, when I attempt to express the "THERE". This is how I described him to a friend who's a seeker; here Watts draws upon Jungian thinking and shows parallels within the Bible; It demonstrates the Watts' ability to draw from different creeds - no cow is sacred, and may be slaughtered at the altar of Truth. Afternoon Ali Babbess I stumbled upon this video by Alan Watts. I think I mentioned his name when we were speaking of Gurus, for I consider him to have exposed and truly lived great teachings from both The East and West; then integrated them into his own Theology. He's also a graphic orator. Here he speaks of Jung, and praises Jung's thorough examination of self; the self that must face and embrace one's dark side to be whole. Hope you can listen and appreciate the wisdom within. Best Sunil

22:30. This 19th Century attitude persists, doggedly ,to this day amongst the "ordo in extremis" elements of my society. The collective superiority complex ,it seems is firmly entrenched in powerful institutional structures. Watts mentions "dogma"; ? the current institutional zeitgeist is rife with it and the adoption of such dogma from the likes of Margaret Mead, who , as Anthropologist, decided to jump the scientific fence and dabbled with applied Sociology.... The"results" of such a misguided foray now span generations of native peoples. The"Church"of course ,goes along for the ride, sometimes to pick up the pieces,at other times just to stick its nose in. ...but I digress.! Watts had a unique and extremely accurate view of C.G. Jung. It is more than apt he quotes that particular verse. It's a beauty, alright !

An entirely different path I was inspired, by life master Watts, to look for what I was seeking and knowing what I was looking for. When one finds one's true center and cleans the negative occupants of one's core and mind, only then can the journey of balancing light with dark until a unification on said journey is achieved. Then I believe you win a candy bar, candy apple, or a Japanese calculus problem a sheet of paper to show your work. Pencil sold separately. 🎉

I/we, and thank God you made it out before the world became confused to the point of not knowing and understanding biological and Natural "characteristics" of what makes humans humans and what allows us humans to continue rising intellectually and responsibly keeping our race of life going through knowing. I hope this is only taken from a perspective of respect and love for my humans. It's no secret that we are as a whole on a very vulnerable and critical point in our existence and I urge and encourage Everyone to lay down our differences and misunderstandings and pick up some compassion, patience and Love. Isolation has further driven the stake through the proverbial heart of our intimate yet stagnant connection of our creator in the inexplicable and unknowable infinity of our great and illumination we should all search for with rigor and devotion we've forgotten we are capable of which on turn takes All of these paths and channels and implements them into our vessel and become what they the masses don't know we are. I love you all and there is plenty of love to go around. It's time for a time of understanding, peace and enlightening. With open arms minds and hearts I challenge you all to light that inner spark and shed some blood sweat and tears in the search for more light. And a forewarning, if it doesn't hurt it doesn't count. Think outside the quadrilateral parallelogram on your quest for your truth and your light. Love, give it generously, liberaly but only with sincerity and purity as your catalyst and intent.

Alan watts came in my dream, didn't know who he was, never heard of him, i was going through psychosis, i got sectioned. I was seeing through people through there eye's it was intriguing yet terrifying, he came in a dream, i was in an autumn forest, he came to me holding a golden box and told me i was being manipulated, i was and still am confused by that statement, in my dream i told him i dont understand and started to cry then a massive snake formed from the autumn leaves started coiling around me then its head went in my mouth and tried to choke me, i put my hand down my throat and pulled it out, alan watts opened the golden box, i throw the snake in the box, then box turned to ice, Alan watts said "good"... then he said look up, so i did, i saw a massive ship, he said its time to go home, then he pointed his finger to 3 people and said let go! I fell to my knees crying saying i dont understand, then i woke up in tears, the dream felt so odd, i googled "let go".. and the man from my dream face popped up his name was Alan watts, it was him in my dream!
